Users And Uses Of Full Text Databases, Carol Tenopir

The increasing variety in full text databases and wider availability means a variety of users and uses. Recent research has suggested that full texts are being used for many different reasons, including: document location, fact retrieval, paragraph retrieval,browsing, and document delivery. The studies reported in this paper show that search strategies may need to differ for different uses or for different types of full text. The reported studies focus on full texts of non-technical magazine articles.

This paper will first examine the constitutional and statutory underpinnings of municipal courts in Tennessee. Then it will briefly review the jurisidiction of municipal courts, the selection of municipal court judges, and municipal court penalties. Finally, it will take a look at the recent case of Summers v. Thompson, Tenn. Sup. Ct., No. 23, filed May 23, 1988. That case has a significant bearing on all of those topics, and it has some implications for what municipal courts will look like in the future. A number of software packages are available to help create an in-house database on a microcomputer. Because these packages vary so widely and because different programs are suited to different applications, it is useful to categorize packages by general characteristics. In-house database software can be divided into 2 broad types: 1. general purpose, which includes text retrieval, file managers, and database management systems, and 2. special purpose, which covers information storage and retrieval (IS&R) packages, integrated bibliographic systems, and library automation applications. Although it is not widely known, social workers have had a substantial part in the impressive reduction in infant mortality achieved in the United States during this century. This article reviews that contribution, noting a decline in interest in infant mortality in the profession beginning in the 1950s. Recent trends are noted that seem to suggest a renewal in the profession's interest in this important subject.

Nonpoint sources of water pollution are defined as land and air use activities that contribute to pollution of ground and/or surface water as a result of runoff, of nonpoint source pollution leachate from septic tanks seepage, or percolation. Major sources are agriculture runoff, urban runoff, and landfills, runoff from forestry and mining operations, and hydrologic modifications. Nonpoint sources of water pollution are responsible for approximately three-fourths of the water quality problems in Tennessee.

The Clean water Act of 1987 (Act) requires states to begin addressing the problem of nonpoint sources of water pollution.

The Sci-Mate Software system consists of three software packages that together provide a total database system. The SciMate Searcher is designed for searching remote databases and downloading from them, the Sci-Mate Manager facilitates the creation and maintenance of private databases, and the Sci-Mate Editor creates formatted bibliographies. The Searcher does not substitute for knowledge of online databases but, when used in conjunction with the other modules, provides an excelIent and easy way to create localIy held databases. AlI three modules are reliable and easy to use.
