Incest, and the problems arising from it, have increasingly come under the scrutiny of therapists and researchers. All family members are affected by incest and all have been studied. Victims are particularly devastated by sexual abuse by a family member but it is a commonly held belief that having a supportive mother can mitigate the trauma a victim experiences. In this study, girls between the ages of ten and eighteen who were the victims of sexual abuse by a father-figure were compared to a group of girls not thought to be incest victims. The increase of men's involvement in their children's lives is a common theme in the popular media. As a parent educator and a teacher of early childhood educators, I was interested in how successful early childhood programs for young disabled children have been at involving fathers. I was curious about the kinds of opportunities that are available to fathers and how many fathers are taking advantage of these opportunities.

The intent of this thesis is to develop low-rise, high density urban housing which will provide its occupants with the basic amenities of light, air, and green space, while reconstructing and extending the fabric of New York City into an area of the East Village.
There exists in the East Village, as in other areas of Manhattan, an uneasy relationship between the low-scale rowhouses and tenements [...] and the monolithic architecture of the superblock housing developments of the 1950s. This study is a sociological analysis of the Depo- Provera Controversy. The strong programme in the sociology of science was the method employed for examining the social and political dimensions of the decision-making process underlying science and technology as it relates to the approval of Depo-Provera as a contraceptive in the United States. The data were consistent with the social constructionist perspective, rather than the positivistic view of science. In almost every instance, scientific conclusions followed alignment rather than arising from objective, universalistic analysis. One County's Experience With Community Corrections: An Assessment Of The Harm, Charles C. Crider

Most correctional systems include pre-parole community placements. This study followed 114 inmates released to halfway house placement in one Michigan county over six years to determine the harm these inmates inflicted on the host community through new crime during halfway house placement and for three years following parole. Their criminal behavior was compared to statistical expectancies of criminal behavior for similar risk parolees. In a second analysis, the volume and seriousness of their criminal behavior was compared with non-comparable parolee controls. In both analyses, the extent and seriousness of crime by experimentals were comparable to that of controls. Criminal activity …

Informal Helping Networks And Social Service Changes: A Community Perspective, Charles Hoch, George Hemmens, Rojean Madsen, Wim Wiewel

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Interviews with 112 household respondents and 58 social service agency directors in three ethnically and racially distinct Chicago neighborhoods provided a comprehensive assessment of -- household helping relationships in a community context. Reliance on informal helping greatly exceeded use of formal agencies at the household level. Households were twice as likely to give help as receive it in a complex variety of ways, while agencies struggled to add new functional programs in a time of retrenchment. What households gave and got did not overlap with agency programs in any coherent way. Further, household respondents and agency directors disagreed in their …

Predictors Of Depressive Symptoms And Unemployed Black Adults, Diane R. Brown, Lawrence E. Gary

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Using data from a probability based survey of unemployed Black adults residing in an urban area, this study explores factors related to the presence of depressive symptoms. Findings indicate that depressive symptoms are less among unemployed persons with higher levels of income, education, religiosity, age and satisfactory social support. Age, however, is the single best predictor of depressive symptoms among unemployed Blacks. There were no significant differences by gender.

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

A large sample of volunteers from a midwestern city chapter of the American Red Cross were studied to identify demographic correlates of the reasons given for volunteering. The findings suggest that the reasons people give for doing volunteer work are conditioned by their age, sex, and marital status. Implications for volunteer programs and future research are discussed.

Changes in the patterns of income and residential segregation were examined in the Portland Metropolitan Area. The 1970 and 1980 Census of Population and Housing were used in calculating the indexes of dissimilarity between black and white populations. The data indicated a significant decrease in the residential segregation of blacks in suburban areas between 1970 and 1980. The central city area still remained highly segregated with a segregation index of 69.5.

Taeuber's index of dissimilarity was used in calculating the unevenness in the distribution of income between blacks and whites. Suburbia showed a significant decrease in income segregation compared to …

Estimated Resources Available For Financing A Nebraska Housing Trust Fund, David R. Dimartino, R. K. Piper

One part of determining the feasibility of a Housing Trust Fund in Nebraska is to estimate the resources available for such a fund. This analysis of available resources focused on four separate sources of potential funding--earnings on sales escrow deposits, earnings on mortgage escrow accounts, earnings on rental security deposits, and earnings from transfer taxes. All figures are based on prevailing practices in Nebraska, and ranges of potential funding are offered because of the use of varying rates of return (interest rates).

As we studied these programs, it became clear to us that most of these programs have some intrinsic values and that it would not be practical or advisable for us to evaluate the programs, Instead of rating programs, we selected programs that met at least one of our ten critical factors for program selection, and many of them met several. Our decisions were also based on a desire to present a variety of programs, especially those that seemed to be appropriate for program planners in Nebraska.

In Nebraska and elsewhere, individuals with disabilities should be receiving their education, vocational training, and employment in the same schools, training programs, businesses, and industries as individuals without disabilities, Generally, this requires some specific planning on the part of schools, generic job training programs, and employers. Such support may mean a minor modification in the environment, the acquisition of an aide, or financial assistance. By developing these support services, individuals with disabilities will not be limited to the few vocational opportunities offered by most segregated vocational workshops, but they will have access to a variety of career options.

This is a monograph about new careers for individuals that society has labeled disabled. It is not, however, about disabilities. Instead, it describes how society can effectively use the unique capabilities of each individual in the work place.

The principles outlined in this monograph could apply to any individual, not just those who have mental, physical, or emotional impairments. We believe that in the future successful career development will be the same for all individuals. Career planning which meets the needs of individuals with severe disabilities is presented as an alternative to the segregated workshop model of· the past.
