A Regression Analysis Of Australopithecine Dentition, Gail Celmer Ranyard Dec 1979

A Regression Analysis Of Australopithecine Dentition, Gail Celmer Ranyard

Masters Theses

The permanent dentition of all known Australopithecines (except those from Hadar) are examined for size trends related to temporal and geographic variation. The Australopithecine sample is divided into four major groups for analysis: gracile Australopithecines, robust Australopithecines, ''Homo", and unknown. Mesiodistal and buccolingual dimensions for each tooth are then subjected to regression analysis. To discern temporal variation in tooth size for any of the taxonomic groups, a regression of tooth size with the median date of the specimen is performed. In order to elucidate dental variation related to geographic location, a regression analysis of tooth size with the latitude and …

Steroid Hormones And Human Variability: Correlation Of Androgen Levels With Age And Occupation In Normal Subjects, Frances E. Purifoy Oct 1979

Steroid Hormones And Human Variability: Correlation Of Androgen Levels With Age And Occupation In Normal Subjects, Frances E. Purifoy

Anthropology ETDs

The endocrine system, coordinated with the central nervous system, is an important mediator of the genetic-environmental interactions which influence the development of human phenotypes. For this reason, endocrine parameters provide an important source of information for anthropological studies. This research focuses on the role of the endocrine system in normal human variability, with emphasis on the steroid hormones, which affect numerous aspects of mammalian morphology, physiology and behavior. Preceding the discussion of original research is an extensive literature review on hormonal variation in each of three areas: 1) sex and inter-individual variation, with emphasis on behavior; 2) variation with age, …

Culture Shock And Adaptation Among Student Missionaries To Japan, Sheryl J. Craig Aug 1979

Culture Shock And Adaptation Among Student Missionaries To Japan, Sheryl J. Craig

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The purpose of this study was to delineate certain parameters of the experience of student missionaries to Japan. This study was a longitudinal, descriptive study which identified background characteristics, aspects of the adaptation process, and stages and intensity of culture shock.

A group of twenty-seven student missionaries were followed from their arrival in Japan, which occurred over a three-month summer period, through the following May, just prior to their expected departure. Data were gathered using interviews, questionnaires, a semantic differential (to measure attitudes), and the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory.

The time when subjects were most at risk for high anxiety, poorer …

The Recruitment Of Spirit-Directed-Healers, Marilyn Mckillop Wells Jun 1979

The Recruitment Of Spirit-Directed-Healers, Marilyn Mckillop Wells

Doctoral Dissertations

The research sought to identify individual and social factors associated with the recruitment of spirit-directed-healers in Sub-Saharan Africa. This type of traditional healer was defined as a person who: 1) elicits and uses spiritual direction and information in the diagnosis and treatment of illness, 2) attributes the ultimate source of his/her healing power to one or more anthropopsychic spirits, and 3) claims to have been called to healing by those spirits. The spirit-directed-healers' decisions, demands, and remedies are legitimized by their source--the directing supernatural entity.

Data gathered through observations and open-ended interviews with four traditional healers who practiced in a …

A Comparative Analysis Of Cranial Variation In Two Recent Human Populations, Patrick J. Key Jun 1979

A Comparative Analysis Of Cranial Variation In Two Recent Human Populations, Patrick J. Key

Masters Theses

This study examines differences in craniometric variation between two recent human populations in light of tooth size. A large-toothed group is represented by Australian Aborigines from the lower Murray River region and a relatively small-toothed group is represented by protohistoric Plains Amerindians from the Larson Site in South Dakota.

The craniometric variation of the two populations is examined by multivariate statistical techniques to determine if their crania are structured along similar lines. Metric differences between the groups are then examined along the structural dimensions common to both groups.

The crania of the two groups were found to be fairly similar …

Cultural Values, Educational Methods And Small Group Communicator Styles In The United States And The People's Republic Of China, Lynda Lee Densem May 1979

Cultural Values, Educational Methods And Small Group Communicator Styles In The United States And The People's Republic Of China, Lynda Lee Densem

Dissertations and Theses

The increasing contact between countries in today’ shrinking world indicates an urgent need for effective communication between cultures. Fundamental to satisfying this need is an understanding of cultural value systems--what factors have created them and how they interact within society. This paper addresses the value systems of two countries that recently have found themselves in positions of expanding contact, the United States (US) and the People's Republic of China (PRC). The value systems of the cultures are traced from their transference to the young of the cultures through formal educational systems to their effect on learning and perceptual sets. General …

Racial Group Identification From The Innominate By Discriminant Function Analysis, Katherine E. Douglass Mar 1979

Racial Group Identification From The Innominate By Discriminant Function Analysis, Katherine E. Douglass

Masters Theses

The purpose of this study was to develop a statistical method for determining the race of unknown individuals from measurements on the innominate. Samples of 45 individuals of each sex from skeletal collections of American Blacks, American Whites, and American Indians were used to calculate discriminant functions and classification functions which separated those groups.

Data for this research consisted of 23 measurements from the right innominate of individuals of known race, and known or estimated sex and age. These data were analyzed by a discriminant function program which calculated both discriminant and classification functions, and percent correct classification by race …

The Alabama River Phase: A Biological Synthesis And Interpretation, Mary Cassandra Hill Mar 1979

The Alabama River Phase: A Biological Synthesis And Interpretation, Mary Cassandra Hill

Masters Theses

Until recently, very little attention has been paid to the protohistoric time period in the state of Alabama. Perhaps this is because it is not as "artifactually'' interesting as the preceding Woodland and Mississippian periods. The only unusual artifacts found from this time period are mortuary vessels, burial urns, which are not found in preceding occupations.

This protohistoric time period, known as the Alabama River phase, is very important, however, in the reconstruction of the total prehistoric cultural development. It was during this time that one of the most elaborate, affluent social structures, the Southeastern Ceremonial Complex, declined and met …

A Method For Analyzing Census Data From Small Populations : Developed, Tested And Applied To A 1958 Census Of Suba Barrio, Paoay, Ilocos Norte, The Philippines, Stephen Aulick Million

Dissertations and Theses

As part of his anthropological fieldwork, in January 1958 Daniel J. Scheans took a census of Suba, an Ilokano barrio in Paoay, Ilocos Norte, the Philippines. The purpose of the thesis was. to use the Suban data to develop, describe and.test a method for analyzing census data for small populations (1000 or fewer persons).

The method was to be complete, to generate as much information as possible based on the data collected, to expose weaknesses and gaps in the data collected and in the data collection procedures, to aid future census-takers .in structuring the content of and procedures for taking …

Functional Analysis Of Great Basin Projectile Points, Roger Wiggin Jan 1979

Functional Analysis Of Great Basin Projectile Points, Roger Wiggin

Dissertations and Theses

This paper presents a refined methodology for distinguishing the stone points of arrows from the stone points of spear thrower darts in archaeological assemblages from the Great Basin. The methodology was developed from a sample of 111 complete stone points collected during the archaeological reconnaissance and testing of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge, Harney County, Oregon, 1971-1974. The points were measured for five metric variables and frequency histograms of each variable were generated by computer. The effectiveness of each variable as an index of functional class (i.e., arrow point vs. dart point) was judged on the basis of the apparent …
