Cultural Pressure On Sex Differences, Patricia Draper Nov 1975

Cultural Pressure On Sex Differences, Patricia Draper

Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications

This paper suggests that sex differences in the behavior of children exist but are not necessarily intensified under certain cultural conditions. Under conditions of culture change to a sedentary economy, certain elements of male and female differentiated behavior are exploited in the process of increasing sex differentiation.

Facing The Economic Issue, Clayton K. Yeutter Aug 1975

Facing The Economic Issue, Clayton K. Yeutter

Clayton K. Yeutter, U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Papers

Perhaps the most significant item on America's unfinished agenda is the status of our economy. We are all aware of serious difficulties in our economic structure today. We could scarcely fail to notice, what with recent devaluations of the dollar, double-digit inflation, serious unemployment, recession and staggering Federal budget deficits.

Obviously, we have not yet achieved the ideal economic system. Even worse, we seem to have major disagreement about where we are and the direction in which we want to travel.

Critical flicker frequency (CFF) was investigated in a free swimming harp seal using behavioral techniques. The resulting CFF vs intensity curve indicates a definite rod/cone break, suggesting a duplex photoreceptor population, whose presence had not been observed in previous morphological reports.

Stages In Corporate Stability And The Risks Of Corporate Failure, Richard C. Edwards Jun 1975

Stages In Corporate Stability And The Risks Of Corporate Failure, Richard C. Edwards

Department of Economics: Faculty Publications

Few would deny that the U.S. economy is today dominated by huge corporations. Much recent writing has proposed that these corporations form a stable and monopolistic (or oligopolistic) "core" around which a more competitive "peripheral" sector exists. Firms in the core are said to be "eternal," while firms in the periphery demonstrate the mortality and high turnover expected in competitive industries. In another context, Paul Baran and Paul Sweezy emphasized the permanence of big corporations when they noted:

The real capitalist today is not the individual businessman but the corporation. .. . The giant corporation of today is an engine …

Address By The Honorable Clayton K. Yeutter Assistant Secretary Of Agriculture For International Affairs & Commodity Programs U.S. Department Of Agriculture To The 51st Annual Convention Of The American Cotton Shippers Association, Clayton K. Yeutter

Clayton K. Yeutter, U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Papers

Thank you very much, Heinz.

You know, this program has gone so well this morning, that it is with some trepidation that l even stand up.

My compliments to everybody here at the table who has been before this podium today.

Hans, I think this is the best organized, best presented program on which I have appeared in many, many months and, I have appeared on a lot of them.

I "take my hat off" to all of you.

Beyond that, I want to say to all of you, before I get into the substance of my remarks, that although …

"Producing A World Crop In A World Market", Clayton K. Yeutter

Clayton K. Yeutter, U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Papers

From the very beginning, rice in the United States has been an export crop. History shows that the development of the U.S. rice industry started in about 1964, and by 1698 sufficient rice was being produced to warrant an effort to export it.

That same year a petition was drawn up in South Caroline where the rice was being produced to get the English to drop their import tariffs on colony-produced rice. Two years later about 300 tons were shipped to England.

Research In National Parks, Robert J. Baker, Hugh H. Genoways

University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers

This was our first involvement with research in the National Parks and we would like to make some observations concerning interactions among basic researchers, park personnel, and the philosophy on which our park systems are based. Our conclusions are not based only on our own experiences, but also on conversations with other basic researchers (especially those who contributed to this symposium) and with park personnel who have aided and worked with other researchers who were not employed by the National Park Service.

Fatal Pox Infection In A Rough-Legged Hawk, G. L. Pearson, D. A. Pass, E. C. Beggs Apr 1975

Fatal Pox Infection In A Rough-Legged Hawk, G. L. Pearson, D. A. Pass, E. C. Beggs

USGS Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center

Natural pox infection occurred in a free-living rough-legged hawk (Buteo lagopus) in northeastern North Dakota. Gross, histological and electron microscopic findings were typical of pox infection, and characteristic lesions developed in red-tailed hawks (Buteo jamaicensis) but not in great horned owls (Bubo virginianus) following inoculation with case material. Death of the rough-legged hawk was attributed to starvation resulting from inability to capture prey and to blood loss from foot lesions.

Youth And The Rural Resurgence, Clayton K. Yeutter Mar 1975

Youth And The Rural Resurgence, Clayton K. Yeutter

Clayton K. Yeutter, U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Papers

Many of us have been concerned about the apparent decline of rural America for some time. We have watched the outmigration of people from farms and rural towns. We have worried about the substandard housing and the relative scarcity of health care. We have charted declining economic bases I and shrinking rural job markets.

Thus, it is a.particular pleasure today to see rural America staging a comeback. A radical turnaround is under way in rural and small town areas. It is changing the destiny of these areas, making them more attractive places for young people like yourselves to locate and …

The Dangerous Time, Clayton K. Yeutter Mar 1975

The Dangerous Time, Clayton K. Yeutter

Clayton K. Yeutter, U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Papers

This is the most dangerous legislative period for American farming in at least ten years. Not since 1965, when low farm incomes and massive crop surpluses forced the beginning of a radical shift in our farm policy approach, has there existed as much potential for backward steps in our farm program.

The nation made the right choice ten years ago. Our farm programs have gradually become more market-oriented and more export-oriented since that time. Acreage allotments and bases have been relaxed. Farmers have been given more management freedom, which they have used to increase their productive efficiency. Massive surpluses have …

The Psychology Of Recovery, Clayton K. Yeutter Mar 1975

The Psychology Of Recovery, Clayton K. Yeutter

Clayton K. Yeutter, U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Papers

Franklin Roosevelt said during the Great Depression, 11 The only thing we have to fear is fear itself." That may have seemed ironic to the man standing in line outside a soup kitchen at the time. But the statement was true; in the 1930's, we let fear drive us into some policies that worsened the Great Depression and made it longer and more far-reaching than might otherwise have been the case.

By the same token, our attitude toward the present recession can play an important role in getting us out of it. And nothing will do more for American agriculture …

The Changing Congressional Climate, Clayton K. Yeutter Feb 1975

The Changing Congressional Climate, Clayton K. Yeutter

Clayton K. Yeutter, U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Papers

The current legislative climate for American agriculture is illustrated by the House Agriculture Committee in the new Congress. The committee in the last session had 37 members and was chaired by Rep. Poage of Texas. The House Agriculture Committee today has 43 members, and is chaired by Rep. Foley of the State of Washington.

The committee was enlarged this session to make room for all of the new Congressmen who wanted to serve on it. Only a few years ago, new Congressmen had to be dragooned onto the Agriculture Committee.

Quick Economic Action Needed To Help Agriculture, Yeutter Says:, Clayton K. Yeutter

Clayton K. Yeutter, U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Papers

"American agriculture needs a healthy non-farm economy to prosper fully. Right now, that means taking some strong economic medicine, which President Ford has prescribed," said Clayton K. Yeutter, Assistant Secretary of Agriculture and Nebraska farmer-rancher in Omaha today. Speaking to the Omaha Chamber of Commerce Agribusiness Club, Mr. Yeutter said that the economies of the United States and most of the world have been thrown out of kilter by the combination of the oil crisis and business cycle downturns.

Looking Forward, Clayton K. Yeutter Feb 1975

Looking Forward, Clayton K. Yeutter

Clayton K. Yeutter, U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Papers

A couple of weeks ago, on my Far Eastern tour, I visited a farm in Taiwan. The contrast with Montana could not have been more striking.

This was a good-sized farm by Taiwanese standards, about 10 acres. It is farmed by a father and his six sons, and provides most of the support for the 40 people in their families. The agriculture is highly intensive. They alternate rice and vegetables on their land, getting at least two crops of each per year. They were also raising hogs--completely confined from birth to slaughter because land is so precious. There were no …

Soybeans -- What To Look For In 1975, Clayton K. Yeutter Jan 1975

Soybeans -- What To Look For In 1975, Clayton K. Yeutter

Clayton K. Yeutter, U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Papers

I have just returned from a tour of our major farm product customers in the Far East -- Japan, Korea, Taiwan and the Philippines. The most impressive thing I found there was the forward-looking spirit of these nations, and their driving determination to continue their economic growth in spite of the world's current energy and inflation problems.

All of these nations are vitally interested in American farm products, with soybeans high on their priority lists. All of them are looking past the current recession atmosphere, and planning for the future. All of them have more protein for their diets as …

Among the carnivores there are one canid, six procyonids, six mustelids, and five felids, whereas the Artiodactyla is represented by two families (Tayassuidae and Cervidae), each with two species.

The Yucatán Peninsula as treated in this series of papers includes the Mexican states of Campeche and Yucatan, and the Federal Territory …

Food Trade And Aid, Clayton K. Yeutter Jan 1975

Food Trade And Aid, Clayton K. Yeutter

Clayton K. Yeutter, U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Papers

The key question on food policy in the world today is how we can get maximum effective output from the world's agriculture in the years ahead. ·World food production will likely need to double in the next 25 years if we are going to meet the needs of the world's rapidly growing population and to provide the higher standard of eating that so many of the world's peoples desire.

We cannot attain that level of efficient food production without a far more efficient and effective world agriculture than we have today.

Modes Of Allocation And The Acculturation Process, David T. Jones Jan 1975

Modes Of Allocation And The Acculturation Process, David T. Jones

Nebraska Anthropologist

This research proposal has evolved out of a class assignment in a "methods" course in cultural anthropology. The assignment required "real but small-scale fieldwork" in a "community" of the student's own choosing. This approach was based on the belief that anthropology is only learned by doing anthropology. One of the objectives of the course was the designing of a research proposal which would have some merit and which would be based on the fieldwork.

The community selected was a small group of American Indians who met weekly in a prayer group at a local church under the sole direction of …

The Relationship Of Economy To Community, Kathy Long Holland Jan 1975

The Relationship Of Economy To Community, Kathy Long Holland

Nebraska Anthropologist

The value system of a society defines and grades the ends actors seek. The ends sought in the economic sphere must be consonant with, or complementary to, goals in other spheres. Economic activity derives its meaning from the norms of the society, and people engage in economic activity for rewards often extrinsic to the economy itself. In any community (society) the norms and values used to define a resource, a commodity, control over certain goods and services, the distributive process, and standards of economic behavior are norms governing most social interaction. The economy is not so structurally differentiated that one …

Opportunities For Museum Research In Anthropology: Are They Really Dead Or Were They Only Sleeping?, Arthur H. Wolf Jan 1975

Opportunities For Museum Research In Anthropology: Are They Really Dead Or Were They Only Sleeping?, Arthur H. Wolf

Nebraska Anthropologist

The decline of anthropological research in museums has been in part attributed to the changing goals of anthropology and the increase in the numbers of university anthropology departments. In recent years many suggestions for increasing museum research potentials have been put forward by Anthropologists interested in its resurgence. An increasing cooperation between museums and university departments is seen as a necessary condition for this resurgence and could lead to more programs which include and train museum anthropologists.

!Kung Women: Contrasts In Sexual Egalitarianism In Foraging And Sedentary Contexts, Patricia Draper Jan 1975

!Kung Women: Contrasts In Sexual Egalitarianism In Foraging And Sedentary Contexts, Patricia Draper

Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications

Most members of the Harvard !Kung Bushman Study Project who have thought about the subject of !Kung women's status agree that !Kung society may be the least sexist of any we have experienced. This impression contradicts some popularly held stereotypes about relations between the sexes in hunting and gathering societies. Because sex is one of the few bases for the differentiation of social and economic roles in societies of this type, it has probably been attributed more weight than it deserves. The men are commonly depicted in rather romantic terms, striving with their brothers to bring home the precious meat …

Age Determination Of Female Redhead Ducks, Charles W. Dane, Douglas H. Johnson Jan 1975

Age Determination Of Female Redhead Ducks, Charles W. Dane, Douglas H. Johnson

USGS Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center

Eighty-seven fall-collected wings from female redhead ducks (Aythya americana) were as- signed to the adult or juvenile group based on "tertial" and "tertial covert" shape and wear. To obtain spring age-related characters from these fall-collected groupings, we considered parameters of flight feathers retained until after the first breeding season. Parameters measured included: markings on and width of greater secondary coverts, and length, weight, and diameter of primary feathers. The best age categorization was obtained with discriminant analysis based on a combination of the most accurately measured parameters. This analysis, applied to 81 wings with complete measurements, resulted in …

Societal Complexity And Moral Development: A Kenyan Study., Carolyn P. Edwards

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

This study examines the moral judgment levels (as measured by Kohlberg’s 6-stage moral judgment interview) for two Kenyan samples. The first sample includes a culturally and racially group of 35 young men and 17 women studying at the University of Nairobi, while the second sample consists of 44 males and 14 females living in seven communities in the Central and Western Provinces of Kenya who were interviewed by a cadre of trained University students on their school vacation. The moral judgment interview included four hypothetical moral dilemmas and a standard set of probing questions. Three of the dilemmas were standard …
