An Experimental Investigation On The Theoretical Development Of Conditioned Inhibition, Daniel B. Felker
An Experimental Investigation On The Theoretical Development Of Conditioned Inhibition, Daniel B. Felker
Student Work
The Hullian Intervening variables, reactive Inhibition (IR) and conditioned inhibition (SIR) have, like many other Hullian intervening variables, generated large amounts of research as reported in the psychological literature. These views of Hull are presented systematically in two of a proposed three-book system.
The Congressional Phase Of The Military Budget, 1961: A Study In Civil Military Relations, Leland E. Hall
The Congressional Phase Of The Military Budget, 1961: A Study In Civil Military Relations, Leland E. Hall
Masters Theses
Introduction
Civilian control of the military in the United States is widely conceived to be Congressional control. The ultimate goal of Congressional procedures is believed to be the "effective Congressional--and civilian--control of the military establishment."1 It is questionable, however, if the United States Constitution intends Congress to be the instrument that exercises civilian control of the military.

Changing Settlement Patterns In A Dry Land Wheat Farming Region: The Mansfield Washington Area, Helen Jayne
Graduate Student Research Papers
The purpose of this study was to trace the change in settlement patterns in an area located in the semiarid plateau region of Eastern Washington and to determine the cause of such a change. Little has been written about the settlement of this area. Therefore, an attempt has been made to learn what changes in settlement have been made and to explain them.

A Description And Classification Of Siriono, A Tupi-Guarani Language, Homer L. Firestone
A Description And Classification Of Siriono, A Tupi-Guarani Language, Homer L. Firestone
Anthropology ETDs
The corpus of published material on Sirionó linguistics is small. Anselmo Schermair, a Franciscan missionary, was the first to publish a study of the Sirionó language. This work is primarily a vocabulary, with a few notes on the consonants and vowels. The words are placed in four classes: substantives, verbs, adjectives and adverbs, without any criteria being offered for the classification. A recent publication on Sirionó is that of Perry and Anne Priest and Joseph Grimes in which they discuss a specific problem of simultaneous ordering of certain syntactic and morphemic items--discussed in terms of "spans" and morphemic alterations involved …

The Effects Of Failure And Achievement Imagery On A Paired Associates Verbal Learning Task, Warren Daniels Bloodsworth
The Effects Of Failure And Achievement Imagery On A Paired Associates Verbal Learning Task, Warren Daniels Bloodsworth
Master's Theses
Concern over the effects of failure on performance has led many researchers to experimental investigation of this problem. However, a review of the literature indicated that the exact effects of failure are still not known. The results of most studies have shown a decrement in performance or learning following failure hill others have found either no effect or an increment.
Foreign Aid, Lloyd Jefferson Barbee
Foreign Aid, Lloyd Jefferson Barbee
Master's Theses
Our Foreign Aid Policy has been to help those friendly countries that need our assistance. There have been several times in history when this philosophy has not been to our advantage. A very good example of this was December 7, 1941, when the Japanese pulled a surprise attack on Pearl Harbor. We sold or traded scrap metal to the Japanese for little trinkets. Little did we know at that time that the Japanese would give us the metal back in the manner that they did.

An Examination Of The Concept Of Flexibility As A Tool For The Analysis Of Social Systems, Elizabeth Jane Lapovsky
An Examination Of The Concept Of Flexibility As A Tool For The Analysis Of Social Systems, Elizabeth Jane Lapovsky
Anthropology ETDs
It is the purpose of this thesis to delineate the concept of flexibility as a tool for the analysis of non-literate social systems. Despite the frequent use of the descriptive term "flexible" in discussion of ethnographic case materials, the potential analytic significance of the concept has not been examined systematically.
The major portion of the thesis is devoted to the analysis of ethnographic data for five societies which manifest fundamental elements of flexibility: the Iban, Konkoma Lapp, Mescalero Apache, Plateau Tonga, and Turkana. The data indicate that the societies share significant organizational and cultural features in addition to the feature …

Social Factors Affecting The Aspirations Of High School Senior Girls, Mary J. Yager
Social Factors Affecting The Aspirations Of High School Senior Girls, Mary J. Yager
Sociology ETDs
For a number of years researchers have been interested in studying adolescents' aspirations. Some studies have been made to show the relationship between adolescents' aspirations and the social status of their families; others have been more concerned with the effect of intelligence upon aspirations, still others with the combined effect of intelligence and social status. More recently, Sociologists have focused upon the effects of the social system of the school as they relate to high school students' aspirations. The larger number of studies has been concerned with aspirations of boys, and it is generally agreed that sex differences in aspirations …

Psychology ETDs
Five albino rats were selected at random each week of the experiment from the general colony. The S's were placed in isolated cages for 72 hours with a ten gram-per-day diet of Purina Chow. These five rats were selected for inclusion in the experiment if they gave 9 out of 10 single-handed reaches with the unbiased dish on their first day of training. Any animals not reaching this criterion were discarded.
An Investigation Of The Correlations Between Years Of Service In Pastoral Work And The Scores Of The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory, C. L. Wessman
Student Work
In the August Twentieth issue of Life Magazine an article appeared entitled, “Why Ministers Are Breaking Down.”1 Three months later, the Christian Century answered this article in Life with “Are Ministers Cracking Up?”2 The conclusions of these two articles were in disagreement. However, they were alike in that they were based upon personal observations of a few cases and not upon careful study. Since then other periodicals have carried like articles written in like style.3 A casual examination of the books on a minister’s personal problems in the library of any theological seminary will manifest the same …
A Content Analysis Of Self-Reliance Or Dependence In A Sixth Grade Reading Text-Book, Roxilu Kelton Bohrer
A Content Analysis Of Self-Reliance Or Dependence In A Sixth Grade Reading Text-Book, Roxilu Kelton Bohrer
Student Work
Traditionally, our nation has been one in which individual effort and enterprise are rewarded. Our “log cabin” heroes, our “Horatio Alger” stories, are a reflection of a cultural tradition of interdependence and self-reliance which we cherish. Most of us fondly recall the story of the little train engine who said, “I think I can, I think I can,” and managed to puff over the hill.1 This little train showed self-reliance and independence in reaching his goal. By contrast, a recent children’s book tells about a little locomotive who goes to school to learn to be a big locomotive and …

An Investigation Of The Attitudes Held By A Randomly Selected Group Of Members Toward Their Young Women's Christian Association A Socio-Psychological Analysis, Robert Lee Geisel
Student Work
Curing the last few years the study of voluntary membership in clubs and other social organisations has become a matter of increased importance in the area of social research. Sociological literature contains several significant studies which have focused attention on this particular area of human behavior. Notwithstanding this development, an attempt will be made in this research project to demonstrate that there is still a definite lack of information with respect to several, important aspects of voluntary membership, it is hoped that the findings of this study will be fruitful in supplying some date deemed necessary to increase our understanding of …
An Investigation Of The Effectiveness Of Educational Placement Of Mentally Retarded Children In A Special Class, Kenneth Warren
An Investigation Of The Effectiveness Of Educational Placement Of Mentally Retarded Children In A Special Class, Kenneth Warren
Doctoral Dissertations
The number of Special Education classes for the educable mentally retarded has increased tremendously during the past several years. Implicit within this expansion is the assumption that for the educable mentally retarded such placement offers an environment superior to any other type of placement. In this environment the child is expected to gain greater benefits academically, socially, and perhaps even emotionally. There is some evidence to support this belief, but there have been few studies investigating the differences that result from placing a child in a special class rather than retaining him in a regular class.
The present attempt of …
Comparison Of Alcohol Offenses Of College Students With Those Of Persons In A Similar Age Group Who Have Not Had College Experience, Cornelis Laban
Comparison Of Alcohol Offenses Of College Students With Those Of Persons In A Similar Age Group Who Have Not Had College Experience, Cornelis Laban
Masters Theses
Introduction
The purpose of the study was to·make· a comparison of the drunk driving behavior of college students with that· of those persons in a similar age group who have not had college experience. There is very little published information about the statutes governing "driving under the influence of liquor" (D.U.I.L.). The educable nature of persons involved in such offenses 8 and the probable anti-social and sociopathic behavior in individuals leading up to the offenses, also need thorough investigation. Very pertinent also is the question whether or not there is a biological basis for this particular behavior; an understanding of …

The Physical Anthropology Of Pottery Mound: A Pueblo Iv Site In West Central New Mexico, Russell Lowell Gordon Schorsch
Anthropology ETDs
The thesis presents the anthropometric data on 110 skeletons obtained by the University of New Mexico from Pueblo IV site of Pottery Mound. The measurements include 27 dimensions and 11 indices of the skull, face, and long bones of all or part of the 49 individuals. Observations on pathologist of the bones and teeth are also discussed. These data are compared with similar material from the Pueblo IV sites of Paako, Pecos, and Hawikuh. The Pottery Mound materials, although of a general Southwestern physical type, are somewhat divergent from other Pueblo IV groups.

A History And Economic Analysis Of The Uranium Industry In New Mexico, Victor L. Devers
Economics ETDs
This paper has a three-fold purpose. First, it is intended to fulfill the final requirement for the Master of Arts degree in economics at the University of New Mexico. Second, the research involved in the writing of the paper had enabled the writer to learn more about one phase of a program vital to the defense of the nation, a program with which he has been associated both as a member of the United States Air Force stationed at Kirtland Air Force Base, New Mexico, and as an employee of the Atomic Energy Commission at Sandia Base. The third and …
Sociology Of Primitive Thought, James Acheson
Sociology Of Primitive Thought, James Acheson
Senior Scholar Papers
The object of this paper was to explore the relationships that exist between ideas and other elements of the social systems of primitive peoples. Taking a clue from sociologists of knowledge, who are especially concerned with the problem of ideology, I began my exploration of primitive thought by searching for primitive ideology. An ideology might be defined as a conscious deliberate attempt by one group of people to take advantage of another group by the manipulation of ideas. It soon became apparent that primitives had nothing comparable to ideology in this sense, save for perhaps the Aztecs. The question then …
Small Group Stimulus Of Urban Renewal And Social Control, Sharon Gear
Small Group Stimulus Of Urban Renewal And Social Control, Sharon Gear
Senior Scholar Papers
This particular Senior Scholar project was undertaken to connect Urban Sociology and Small Group sociology. The approach was to examine small groups engaged in Urban Renewal projects. The first step was the selection of cities to be considered from recognized studies in Sociology. The cities were placed on a continuum of citizen participation from information gathered in reply to letters sent out to them. Next a great deal of research was done on small groups, their functioning principles and their importance to the individual and society. The principle was accepted that if small group material and emotional benefits could be …
Psychological And Biochemical Mechanisms Of Schizoprenia, Bruce Macpherson
Psychological And Biochemical Mechanisms Of Schizoprenia, Bruce Macpherson
Senior Scholar Papers
Schizophrenia is a disease whose physical cause is unknown despite the attempts of several research teams to discover a physical basis for it. Some success has been gained in genetic studies which indicate that schizophrenia is an inherited disability. However, since research tools are at present so sadly inadequate, the value of pursuing a genetic line of reasoning is questionable. To compensate for the lack of biochemical certainties in treating mental illness, psychological theories have been constructed to explain the schizophrenia syndrome. Normal personality is seen as the resultant of environmental and inherited influences. Involved in the formation of personality …
An Economic Analysis Of The Retail Raw Milk Industry In The State Of Utah, H. Kent Dewsnup
An Economic Analysis Of The Retail Raw Milk Industry In The State Of Utah, H. Kent Dewsnup
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
For 98 years after the first "Mormon" pioneers entered the Salt Lake Valley there was no statewide control of the sale and distribution of fluid milk. Prior to any statewide control, however, laws were passed in Salt Lake City and Ogden outlawing sale of raw milk to final consumers in those cities as of January 1, 1945.
