Careers, Organization Size, And Succession, Louis Kriesberg Nov 1962

Careers, Organization Size, And Succession, Louis Kriesberg

Program for the Advancement of Research on Conflict and Collaboration

The analysis is based upon data from a national study of heads of public health and mental health programs at the state and local levels. Consistent with Grusky's findings, heads of large public health and of large mental health departments at the state level tend to have shorter tenure periods than heads of small departments. Although the positions are filled by political appointment, the professional requirements are sufficiently important that the mechanisms discussed by Grusky can operate. furthermore, the kind of career line, itinerant or home guard, also is relevant; this helps the findings that at the local level length …

A Pattern For You : Clothing Leaflet 1

Nebraska 4-H Clubs: Historical Materials and Publications

A requirement for good-looking clothes is a good pattern, correct in size and design for you, and suitable in design for the fabric. Most pattern companies base the size of their patterns on a standard scale of measurements which is printed on the pattern envelope. You may find that one kind of pattern fits you better than any other and requires less adjustment and fitting. Tables of the measurements in use by each company are given in the counter pattern books.

Social Factors Affecting The Aspirations Of High School Senior Girls, Mary J. Yager Jun 1962

Social Factors Affecting The Aspirations Of High School Senior Girls, Mary J. Yager

Sociology ETDs

For a number of years researchers have been interested in studying adolescents' aspirations. Some studies have been made to show the relationship between adolescents' aspirations and the social status of their families; others have been more concerned with the effect of intelligence upon aspirations, still others with the combined effect of intelligence and social status. More recently, Sociologists have focused upon the effects of the social system of the school as they relate to high school students' aspirations. The larger number of studies has been concerned with aspirations of boys, and it is generally agreed that sex differences in aspirations …

An Investigation Of The Attitudes Held By A Randomly Selected Group Of Members Toward Their Young Women's Christian Association A Socio-Psychological Analysis, Robert Lee Geisel

Student Work

Curing the last few years the study of voluntary membership in clubs and other social organisations has become a matter of increased importance in the area of social research. Sociological literature contains several significant studies which have focused attention on this particular area of human behavior. Notwithstanding this development, an attempt will be made in this research project to demonstrate that there is still a definite lack of information with respect to several, important aspects of voluntary membership, it is hoped that the findings of this study will be fruitful in supplying some date deemed necessary to increase our understanding of …

Sociology Of Primitive Thought, James Acheson May 1962

Sociology Of Primitive Thought, James Acheson

Senior Scholar Papers

The object of this paper was to explore the relationships that exist between ideas and other elements of the social systems of primitive peoples. Taking a clue from sociologists of knowledge, who are especially concerned with the problem of ideology, I began my exploration of primitive thought by searching for primitive ideology. An ideology might be defined as a conscious deliberate attempt by one group of people to take advantage of another group by the manipulation of ideas. It soon became apparent that primitives had nothing comparable to ideology in this sense, save for perhaps the Aztecs. The question then …

Small Group Stimulus Of Urban Renewal And Social Control, Sharon Gear May 1962

Small Group Stimulus Of Urban Renewal And Social Control, Sharon Gear

Senior Scholar Papers

This particular Senior Scholar project was undertaken to connect Urban Sociology and Small Group sociology. The approach was to examine small groups engaged in Urban Renewal projects. The first step was the selection of cities to be considered from recognized studies in Sociology. The cities were placed on a continuum of citizen participation from information gathered in reply to letters sent out to them. Next a great deal of research was done on small groups, their functioning principles and their importance to the individual and society. The principle was accepted that if small group material and emotional benefits could be …

Minority Rule, The Maine Campus May 1962

Minority Rule, The Maine Campus

Social Justice: Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion

The South isn't dead, at least not yet. Still grasping at straws to maintain its segregated way of life, the last stronghold of American feudalism is slowly dying. But it will die a glorious death, in the traditions of old, going down to defeat with its flags flying. Unfortunately, for the rest of the nation, its fruitless struggle will engulf all.

School Attendance, Absenteeism And Withdrawal: A Sociological Analysis, John Martin Bogert May 1962

School Attendance, Absenteeism And Withdrawal: A Sociological Analysis, John Martin Bogert

Masters Theses

In recent years, considerable interest in the phenomenon of absenteeism has been expressed by sociologists. Most of the work in this area has been confined to the industrial situation. In our present model-testing experiment, we wish to compare high school attendance with an industrial model.

The high school chosen to represent our model was the Mountain Grove Senior High School, Mountain Grove, Missouri. This particular school was chosen because of the availability of excellent records. The school records were of extreme significance as they represent the primary source of data used to construct our high school model. The only other …

The Sociology Of Emile Durkheim, Patricia Chewning Young Apr 1962

The Sociology Of Emile Durkheim, Patricia Chewning Young

Honors Theses

Sociology, the science of society, is an academic discipline. As a social science it is concerned with the acquisition of knowledge, rather than with the reform of individuals or of society. Sociologists, however, are not indifferent to the attempts made by men to improve the conditions of human life. The French sociologist Emile Durkheim firmly believed that the knowledge acquired through the scientific investigation of society could be used to help men build a better tomorrow, but that this sound Imowledge was needed before any type of social reform could be effective. Durkheim's conception of society gave him an indelible …
