The Development Of The Iron Industry In East Tennessee, Alan Hersh Dec 1958

The Development Of The Iron Industry In East Tennessee, Alan Hersh

Masters Theses

Introduction: Production of iron in East Tennessee began almost with the advent of the first settlers. From its early, almost primitive, beginnings, iron production developed into a large-scale, modern industry and then declined to the point of being almost non-existent.

The history of the iron industry can be divided into three phases; the early period of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries; the period of large-scale development of the late nineteenth century and early twentieth century; and the period of decline of the twentieth century. Each period was distinctly different from the others. This study is concerned with the …

A Comparison Of The Economic Rates Of Growth In India And Mainland China During Their First Five Year Plans, Jack Gore Sep 1958

A Comparison Of The Economic Rates Of Growth In India And Mainland China During Their First Five Year Plans, Jack Gore

Economics ETDs

It is the thesis of this paper that India is falling behind the rate of growth in China, and that this has extremely serious long run consequences for more democratic political institutions in India and the whole world. It is time for a realistic appraisal of the relative rates of growth of these two countries so that the current prevailing under-estimation of China does not become an excuse for inadequate aid to India from the West.

A Survey Of The Attention Given To Population Problems By Physical And Social Science Societies, Morton K. Ohlson Sep 1958

A Survey Of The Attention Given To Population Problems By Physical And Social Science Societies, Morton K. Ohlson

Economics ETDs

It is the purpose of this thesis to examine the publications of leading physical and social science societies 1946 through 1956 with a view to finding out the degree of importance that they attach to the world's present rate of population growth. As a result of this examination of scientific literature it is the thesis of this paper that the overwhelming majority of social and physical scientists believe that the present rate of growth of the world's population is one of the most contemporary problems. The attention given has been uneven among the scientific societies. Some have devoted an adequate …

The Life And After-Dinner Speaking Of Chauncey M. Depew, Sr., Norbert J. Tlachac Aug 1958

The Life And After-Dinner Speaking Of Chauncey M. Depew, Sr., Norbert J. Tlachac

Communication ETDs

This study deals with the life and after-dinner speaking of Chauncey Mitchell Depew, Sr. As a problem area this is a large one, for it has its setting in 'a period in which there was perhaps more speechmaking than at any previous time in the history of the United States." Depew was popular from the days of the Civil War to his death in 1928. Strangely enough, though speechmaking was so widespread an art during this period, it was not one characterized by oratorical giants such as those gracing the previous fifty years. Indeed, the era has been depreciated to …

A Developmental Study Of Concept Formation Behavior In Pre-School Children As Measured By The Hunter-Pascal Concept Formation Test, Bernard D. Kaiman Aug 1958

A Developmental Study Of Concept Formation Behavior In Pre-School Children As Measured By The Hunter-Pascal Concept Formation Test, Bernard D. Kaiman

Doctoral Dissertations

Introduction: In psychology the investigation of the formation of concepts has long been a part of the study of what has been called the thought processes. There are, however, very few studies of early concepts formation in humans, especially in children before and during the development of speech patterns. Most of the studies which have dealt with the investigation of concept formation have depended largely for their data on speech processes. It can, however, be shown that concept formation exists before speech behavior, and that its development seems to be somewhat parallel to the development of speech in the child. …

The Effect Of Varying Degrees Of Anxiety Upon Classroom Learning Performance, Martha J. Thorne Aug 1958

The Effect Of Varying Degrees Of Anxiety Upon Classroom Learning Performance, Martha J. Thorne

Masters Theses

Introduction: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of varying degrees of anxiety, as measured by the fifty-item forced-choice Taylor Scale of Manifest Anxiety (TMAS) (24), upon the classroom learning performance of a group of thirty-one student nurses, as measured by the increase in scores on an objective-type final examination administered at the beginning and end of a course in psychiatric nursing. The thirty-one subjects were divided into three groups on the basis of low, medium, and high anxiety scores on the TMAS. The per cent gain scores from the pre- and post-final exam were then compared …

A Further Investigation Of The Effects Of Achievement Imagery And Differential Instructions On Maze Learning Performance, Ann Hunter Jul 1958

A Further Investigation Of The Effects Of Achievement Imagery And Differential Instructions On Maze Learning Performance, Ann Hunter

Master's Theses

One of the personality variables that has been the object of considerable interest in recent years is "need achievement." This variable was first defined by Murray as the need for "success in competition with some standard of excellence." McClelland and his associates, measuring need for achievement from written responses to TAT-type pictures, have reported Significant and useful relationships between this variable and several behavioral criteria.

In order to have a more objective method of measuring need achievement, the Iowa Picture Interpretation Test (IPIY) was developed at the State University of Iowa laboratories. The IPIT obtains scores on four variables: achievement …

A Study Of The Relationship Of The Present-Day Patterns Of Family Life With The Emotional Stability Of Children, Margaret Ruth Dresslaer

Electronic Theses & Dissertations

Problem: This is a study of the pattern of living in the present-day family and the possible effect that it may have upon the emotional stability of children. Also, the writer seeks to cite to the reader the elements that were common in the lives of "sick personalities" that she had known and the emotionally immature children under study.

Method of Research. The investigation comprised case studies of fifty pupils of the Lamar Elementary School who were grouped according to chronological age. Information for the case studies were obtained from school records, conversations and conferences with parents, and surveys within …

An Analysis Of Relationships Among Ratings On Entrance Examinations And Academic Achievement In The College Of Engineering, University Of New Mexico, Elizabeth B. Thurston Jun 1958

An Analysis Of Relationships Among Ratings On Entrance Examinations And Academic Achievement In The College Of Engineering, University Of New Mexico, Elizabeth B. Thurston

Psychology ETDs

The purpose of this study is two-fold:

1. To determine relationships between academic success of students in the College of Engineering, University of New Mexico, and their standing in certain entrance examinations; and

2. To recommend cutting scores on the various tests which might be set as standards for admittance to the College of Engineering.

For the purpose of this study, no correlations were drawn between scores on these entrance examinations and grade point averages for university work. The criterion for validity for these tests in this case was not grade point averages, but simply the "succeed-fail" differential. Since a …

Mistassini Hunting Groups And Hunting Territories, Edward S. Rogers Jun 1958

Mistassini Hunting Groups And Hunting Territories, Edward S. Rogers

Anthropology ETDs

The present study is directed toward an analysis of hunting groups and hunting territories among the Mistassini Indians of south-central Quebec. It has three objectives. First, an attempt is made to isolate the factors responsible for limited variability in the size of hunting groups at the present time. The hypotheses developed through this analysis of Mistassini data were re-examined with reference to historical and ethnological materials pertaining to the Montagnais in general. Second, the development of hunting territories is traced from the time of contact, and the factors responsible for their formation determined. Finally, previous theories of the origin of …

A Comparative Study Of Personality Adjustment Of Successful And Unsuccessful Readers, Marvin F. Daley Jun 1958

A Comparative Study Of Personality Adjustment Of Successful And Unsuccessful Readers, Marvin F. Daley

Psychology ETDs

The reading process may be considered essentially as a "complex but unitary psychological function". As such, it involves ideational, emotional, and motor aspects as well as the adaptations of the reader to the reading experience. Undoubtedly, of all phases of the school curriculum, the varied aspects and constituents of the reading process have been the most extensively investigated. Yet, the area concerning which least is known is the personality adjustment of the reader. This limitation of research was recognized by Gann over a decade ago, and is as true today as it was then.

Santa Ana Phonology, Irvine Davis Jun 1958

Santa Ana Phonology, Irvine Davis

Anthropology ETDs

The seven Keresan-speaking Pueblos of north-central New Mexico with their present population of some 8,000 persons have long been in contact with Spanish and Anglo-American Cultures. Despite centuries of contact, the language of these Pueblos, like many other aspects of their culture, today remains comparatively intact and shows little evidence of soon dying out. Linguistically, however, Keresan continues to be little known, both as to its structure and its relationship to other languages.

Development Of An Inventory Of Noncognitive Predictors Of Academic Success, Annie W. Ward Jun 1958

Development Of An Inventory Of Noncognitive Predictors Of Academic Success, Annie W. Ward

Doctoral Dissertations

The journals of education and psychology abound in studies of "prediction of academic success" in various courses, curricula and training programs. Since grades are readily available as a criterion and since previous grades and the scores on varied standardized tests are available as predictors, such studies are simple. The results of these studies are useful in selecting the best of available tests or the best combinations for predictive purposes, thus increasing the usefulness of the tests for group prediction. However, in spite of a number of these studies, and the refinement of statistical procedures used in conducting them, no such …

A Study Of The Recognition Of Non-Financial Problems And Needs In Interviews With Applicants For Adc, Elizabeth Powers Jun 1958

A Study Of The Recognition Of Non-Financial Problems And Needs In Interviews With Applicants For Adc, Elizabeth Powers

Masters Theses

In no other way does a democracy more clearly demonstrate its conviction regarding its responsibility for the total welfare of its people than in its social legislation. And our present public assistance laws may be viewed as the highest expression of that conviction. The enactment of their most recent revisions, the 1956 Public Assistance Amendments to the Social Security Act, afford a very broad legal base on which the public assistance agency can act to convert the ideals of service to needy individuals and families into reality.

Implications Of Pueblo Ruins As Plant Habitats, Richard A. Yarnell May 1958

Implications Of Pueblo Ruins As Plant Habitats, Richard A. Yarnell

Anthropology ETDs

It is a common observation that vegetation on sites of early human habitation is distinctive from that occurring normally in the vicinity. However, little has been done to determine whether these differences exist in patterns of distribution dependent upon human habitation. The identification of the species involved also presents the problem of determination of the reasons for these differences.

Walapai Culture-History, Robert Clark Euler May 1958

Walapai Culture-History, Robert Clark Euler

Anthropology ETDs

The Walapai Indians, an upland Arizona Yuman--speaking tribe, in historic times lived in northwestern Arizona. Their territory extended from the Colorado River on the North and West, to the Bill Williams Fork-Santa Maria River on the south, and the Cataract Creek drainage on the east. This same region, prehistorically, was occupied by the Cerbat Branch, a group included by archaeologists within the Patayan Root. Archaeologists, solely from surface surveys, have suggested a history of the Cerbat from about 700 to 1150 A.D. After that date no cultural data for the area were known until 1776, when the Franciscan Father Garces …

Man And Society In The Works Of Georges Duhamel, Sr. Mary R. Carter May 1958

Man And Society In The Works Of Georges Duhamel, Sr. Mary R. Carter

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation

Man and the circumstances influencing his activities have always interested Georges Duhamel. This concern developed from a profound desire to aid, to improve, and to cure the ills of mankind. Having become a physician, he was able to fulfill his wishes, particularly in his surgical experiences on the battle front where he treated thousands for all types of human miseries. [...] The aim of this study is to show the extent of Duhamel's understanding of the society of his time considering man as the active participant in its formation

The Agricultural Phase Of The Technical Assistance Program Of The United States In Iran, With Special Reference To The Role Of Utah State University, Malek Mansour Esfandiary May 1958

The Agricultural Phase Of The Technical Assistance Program Of The United States In Iran, With Special Reference To The Role Of Utah State University, Malek Mansour Esfandiary

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

My thesis, while examining the broad scope of American technical assistance in agriculture to Iran, emphasizes the work of scientists and technicians who went there under contract with Utah State University (USAC). I have tried to make this work as complete as available information makes possible.

There are several problems encountered. Some technicians were reluctant to make comments which might appear to be critical of either the American administration or the Iranian government-cultural climate; some did not receive my letter probably because of a change of address. Reference materials were scarce. In most cases it was almost impossible to separate …

The Relationship Between Written Knowledge Of The Alphabet And Spelling Ability At The Fourth Grade Level, Dewey A. Schluter Jr. Apr 1958

The Relationship Between Written Knowledge Of The Alphabet And Spelling Ability At The Fourth Grade Level, Dewey A. Schluter Jr.

Student Work

Profound differences in theory are never invented; they grow out of conflicting elements in a genuine problem. The problem of spelling is not new; it has existed since the first crude attempts at written communication. From the earliest symbol to the complex alphabets used in spelling today, the written word has been the method by which mankind has expressed himself and recorded his discoveries.

An Exercise On The Level Of Aspiration For The Introductory Psychology Laboratory., Susan Williams Strange Jan 1958

An Exercise On The Level Of Aspiration For The Introductory Psychology Laboratory., Susan Williams Strange

Psychology ETDs

It is customary to have a laboratory concurrent with a science course. These laboratories presumably demonstrate the laws and principles of that science. This is done in several ways: by giving the students practical first-hand knowledge of the principles, by having them observe demonstrations or participate in them, by teaching them through “audio-visual aids”, and so on. But it is because certain problems are posed by the very nature of the laboratory. For example, time limits may prevent the completion of experiments or they may be too complicated for the beginning student to undertake.

A Comparative Study In The Development Of The Sensori-Motor Intelligence According To Jean Piaget And Arnold Gesell, Henri R. Ouellet

Student Work

The discovery of a proper topic for a thesis, as well as the organization of the material to be studied may be born of either a sudden insight into a problem left unsolved until now or may grow from a long familiarity with scientific facts, with the result that relationships and comparisons gradually emerge and impose themselves as a distinct object of investigation.
