The purpose of this thesis is to interpret t e amount of advertising done by one of Milwaukee's leading department stores for the months of September, October and May, 1934. It will be the endeavor of the author to explain why the various products sold in this store received more advertising stress during some periods than in others, why the store purchased more advertising space in the various media in some seasons than in others and why certain advertising media were given preference over others.

The journalist, by the very nature of his task, is constantly working, directly or indirectly, with type. It is the medium through which he expresses himself; his whole effectiveness depends upon the efficiency of that medium. If he wishes to be an advertiser, publicity director, layout man, make-up editor, magazine editor, or any one of a dozen related fields, his position is aggravated--he must have at least a rudimentary knowledge of the type with which he is to work.

The object of this thesis is to survey all three metropolitan newspapers of Milwaukee to ascertain what has been the effect of the wirephoto upon the Milwaukee Journal, The Milwaukee Sentinel and the Wisconsin News, and also to discover what can be done by a newspaper without the use of the wirephoto to overcome the effects of the wirephoto upon the readers.
