Advocacy Experiences Of Licensed Professional Counselors Who Serve Minor Survivors Of Abuse And Neglect, Earniesha S. Lott-Kennebrew
University of New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
LPCs in Louisiana operate in multiple professional roles and maintain various responsibilities, including advocacy for clients. Although numerous advocacy opportunities occur when counselors are working with children, a minimal amount of research exists regarding advocacy training, as well as the associated intricacies and responsibilities of advocacy. Lack of awareness of advocacy issues is a prominent barrier to advocacy involvement and it is suggested that counselor education programs are infusing advocacy education into courses but are not necessarily teaching specific constructs of advocacy. Thus, relevant and existing advocacy literature is sparse.
The purpose of my qualitative phenomenological research is to understand …

Addressing Systemic Inequities: A Psychoeducational Group For Advocating For African Americans, Jaree' Barnwell
Educational Specialist, 2020-current
This paper will discuss and describe the development of an open psychoeducational group that will empower people of the community through education to advocate for African American/Black people within institutions that may perpetuate barriers. Acknowledging that one in four people struggle with mental health issues, it is imperative to consider an appropriate treatment modality that destigmatizes mental health and equips participants with information. This group is especially relevant as one in three African Americans, who struggle with mental health concerns, will never receive the appropriate care comparatively afforded to white populations. This thesis will concisely discuss the education system, the …

Roles, Responsibilities, And Contributions Of Medical Social Workers In An Interdisciplinary Team, Jacqueline Jeanette Ruffin
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
In the field of social work, roles, responsibilities, and contributions of social workers within an interdisciplinary team are often undefined. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore and describe medical social workers’ perceptions of their roles, responsibilities, and contributions to an interdisciplinary team. The theoretical frameworks that guided this study are Bronstein’s model of interdisciplinary collaboration, Luhmann’s systems theory, and Slater’s role differentiation. Interviews were conducted with 10 medical social workers who currently or previously worked within an interdisciplinary team to explore medical social workers’ perceptions of their roles, responsibilities, and contributions to an interdisciplinary team. The Centers for Disease Control and prevention reported nearly 2.3 million STD cases diagnosed in 2017, and the number is continuing to rise. San Antonio, Texas, is ranked third in the state of Texas with the highest STD rates and leading in the state with congenital syphilis. There is an increased risk for contracting STDs working in the sex industry. There are little to no studies pertaining to any educational interventions offered to exotic dancers to increase personal knowledge on STDs. This research has focused on an educational intervention offered by a nurse practitioner to exotic dancers in two adults-only …

Therapeutic Autoethnography: From Epiphany To Catharsis, Kelsey Railsback
Department of Family Therapy Dissertations and Applied Clinical Projects
A large percentage of the U.S. population has been directly or indirectly affected by sexual violence. The Rape, Abuse, and Incest National Network (2020b) reported 433,648 victims annually, and Dillinger (2018) reported 747,408 registered sex offenders living in the United States. As a victim-survivor of sexual violence, I have a unique narrative in that I chose to work therapeutically with sexual offenders. Reactions from my family, friends, and colleagues have varied from surprise to alarm, but I hope this dissertation inspires readers to take a second look. Readers who are mental health professionals may consequently be motivated to work with …
