An Investigation Of Communication Patterns And Strategies Between International Teaching Assistants And Undergraduate Students In University-Level Science Labs, Barbara Elas Gourlay
An Investigation Of Communication Patterns And Strategies Between International Teaching Assistants And Undergraduate Students In University-Level Science Labs, Barbara Elas Gourlay
Master's Theses, Dissertations, Graduate Research and Major Papers Overview
Investigates communication between international teaching assistants and their undergraduate students in university-level chemistry labs. Qualitative and quantitative data from observations and interviews with study participants guide the analysis of laboratory interactions, which examines patterns of conversational listening. Results reveal that successful communication depends on teaching assistant listening comprehension skills and on the coordination of verbal and visual (gestural and physical resources) sources of information.
E-Coaching In Organizations: A Study Of Features, Practices, And Determinants Of Use, Rebecca Vaughan Frazee Edd
E-Coaching In Organizations: A Study Of Features, Practices, And Determinants Of Use, Rebecca Vaughan Frazee Edd
Dissertations
Employee development in organizations is moving away from classroom instruction to more individualized, flexible forms of just-in-time learning and support, such as e-coaching. E-coaching, conducted partially or entirely at a distance, offers convenience, cost-savings, efficiency, and improved access to people and resources. However, research on e-coaching for work-related purposes is limited. This descriptive and exploratory study used mixed methods to examine e-coaching extent, technologies and practices, and factors that influence deployment and success in organizations. A web-based survey gathered opinions from over two hundred workforce learning and performance professionals. Semi-structured interviews gathered critical incidents from twenty e-coaches. The researcher used …

Deepening The Theoretical Framework Of Creative Leadership: Creative Leaders And Arts-Based Learning, Deborah C. Clifford
Creativity and Change Leadership Graduate Student Master's Projects
Current corporate and academic paradigms are in need of fresh eyes and insightful responses. Forces such as; 21st century challenges, a desire for meaningful work and emerging positive organizational scholarship are changing the way we envision leadership as well as our thinking on how it might be fostered. Learning African-American History In A Synthetic Learning Environment, Adams Greenwood-Ericksen
Learning African-American History In A Synthetic Learning Environment, Adams Greenwood-Ericksen
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Synthetic Learning Environments (SLEs) represent a hybrid of simulations and games, and in addition to their pedagogical content, rely on elements of story and interactivity to drive engagement with the learning material. The present work examined the differential impact of varying levels of story and interactivity on learning. The 2x2 between subjects design tested learning and retention among 4 different groups of participants, each receiving one of the 4 possible combinations of low and high levels of story and interactivity. Objective assessments of participant performance yielded the unexpected finding that learners using the SLE performed more poorly than any other …
Prospective English-As-A-Second-Language Educators' Use Of Vygotskian Scaffolding In Mentoring Academic Writing, Ixchell Alejandra Keller
Prospective English-As-A-Second-Language Educators' Use Of Vygotskian Scaffolding In Mentoring Academic Writing, Ixchell Alejandra Keller
Theses Digitization Project
This study focuses on two prospective teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) who were enrolled in a master's program and were being tutored as they prepared to write a scholarly review of literature. The methodology involved videotaping four tutoring sessions, each tutor was assigned to participate in two tutoring sessions each with the same participant. The videotaped data was then transcribed and analyzed for significant scaffolding occurrences that may have promoted successful transfer of responsibility facilitating autonomy for the learner. The goal of this project was to promote autonomous learning and to help find ways for students …
Critical Analysis Of Total Physical Response As Pedagogy, Rachel Lynn Anderson
Critical Analysis Of Total Physical Response As Pedagogy, Rachel Lynn Anderson
Theses Digitization Project
Total Physical Response (TPR) is a language-teaching method, developed by James Asher in the 1960's. In this critical analysis the theoritical origins of TPR were explored along with the work of James Asher. Twenty-three studies by Asher were examined in conjuction with others who have studied TPR, in order to understand the effectiveness of TPR as both theory and pedagogy. In all studies examined, TPR (which focuses on listening comprehension) was found to be an effective means for producing near perfect retention even long term. TPR was found to be a powerful method for teaching a second lanuage.
Game On: The Impact Of Game Features In Computer-Based Training, Renee Derouin-Jessen
Game On: The Impact Of Game Features In Computer-Based Training, Renee Derouin-Jessen
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The term "serious games" became popularized in 2002 as a result of an initiative to promote the use of games for education, training, and other purposes. Today, many companies are using games for training and development, often with hefty price tags. For example, the development budget for the U.S. Army recruiting game, "America's Army" was estimated at $7 million. Given their increasing use and high costs, it is important to understand whether game-based learning systems perform as billed. Research suggests that games do not always increase learning outcomes over conventional instruction. However, certain game features (e.g., rules/goals, fantasy, challenge) might …
