A Survey Of Reading-Readiness Skills And Their Application To The Late Reader, Gail E. Robbins
Dissertations and Theses
Reading readiness is a subject that concerns reading teachers and educators. Inadequate readiness training may cause some students to become late readers, who can be identified as students who score below their age and grade level on a standardized reading test. It is important to define reading readiness and examine the component skills and factors in order to help late readers. This examination was conducted by a study of reading-readiness literature. The reading-readiness skills include auditory discrimination, visual and visual-motor discrimination, development of language, concept formation, and reasoning skills. Readiness factors include fixed factors, social, and emotional factors. Fixed factors …

Each charts focuses on a particular "operator" verb in English ("be," "do," or the modals) and shows the role the operator plays in the grammatical transformations of question formation and negation. The student can actually see how the same sentence changes from the statement to the question form and from affirmative to negative. The Cultural Problems Encountered In Teaching Basic English To Russian Jew Refugees As An Initial Step To Entering An English Speaking Society, James Edwin Traver
MA TESOL Collection
The Organizzazione Rieducazione Tecnia in Rome, Italy offers English language instruction to Russian Jew refugees who for one reason or another wish to obtain visas to an English speaking country. The students are in a transitional phase in their lives; they have left their country of birth and haven't yet been accepted into another country of their choice. This creates special needs in regard to language acquisition. They need survival skills to help them make this transition and they need to gain an appreciation of English speaking cultures.

The Influence Of Response Modality On Children's Imitation Of Helping And Coercive Behavior, Wallace Arthur Melcher
The Influence Of Response Modality On Children's Imitation Of Helping And Coercive Behavior, Wallace Arthur Melcher
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
The present study examined the effects of adult, film mediated models on the prosocial behavior of school children. Also the effect of congruency and incongruency between the model's response and the response the children were asked to perform was investigated. Thirty third-grade students, 19 female and 11 male, were randomly assigned to three groups. The first group observed a short film of an adult model providing helping (positive) feedback to a young boy who was playing a marble maze game. The second group was treated identically to the first except that the model provided coercive (negative) feedback. The third group …
Teaching Developmentally Disabled Children To Play By Themselves, Dennis E. Raschke
Teaching Developmentally Disabled Children To Play By Themselves, Dennis E. Raschke
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
The effectiveness of a training procedure designed to teach developmentally disabled children to play by themselves was examined. In addition, the influence of the frequency of probing was investigated. Baseline data showed low levels of self-amusement. The generalization training procedure produced moderate increases in self-amusement when probes were conducted frequently. The same treatment procedure produced higher levels of self-amusement when probes were conducted intermittantly. Some strategies for more successfully programming self-amusement are suggested.

A Pilot Study Of A Sex Education Program In A Sheltered Workshop Using A Cognitive-Behavioral Model Based On Rational Emotive Therapy, Jacqueline A. Rieck, Thomas E. Frederick
Masters Theses
This pilot study was developed to teach people with mental retardation about their own sexuality, appropriate community behaviors, and to develop within them a basic sense of responsibility for their own actions. Problems in social/sexual behaviors have been consistently quoted as reasons for high recidivism rates, as well as difficulties in community living, vocational placement, and other generalized stereotypes about mental retardation. Often the public remains uninformed about, does not recognize, and/or feels that sexual rights for people with any mental differences should not exist. Additionally, when any form of sexuality was expressed by such people it resulted in shock …

"Pointing the Way" looks at reading and writing activities and how they are introduced and worked with in the initial lessons of a beginning English class, using Silent Way charts. Methods And Materials For Esl Literacy, Ann Ebersole Strauch
Methods And Materials For Esl Literacy, Ann Ebersole Strauch
MA TESOL Collection
Literacy education for adolescents and adults has been a perplexing problem for ESL teachers, who are generally unprepared for this specific type of instruction. Materials designed for native-English speakers are not suitable for ESL literacy instruction, and teacher-training institutions are not providing preparation for ESL literacy for prospective ESL teachers. Furthemore, very little research has been done on ESL literacy. In spite of this dearth of information and lack of suitable didactic materials available, substantial numbers of nonliterate students are seeking ESL instruction. This thesis addresses the need for methods and materials specifically intended for ESL literacy instruction.

Visual Developmental Dyslexia In Children (Specific Language Disability), Sue Golden
MA TESOL Collection
Developmental Dyslexia is a disorder manifested by difficulty in learning to read, speak, and write, despite conventional instruction, adequate intelligence, and socio-cultural opportunity. Although this disorder affects approximately 10% of all school children, it remains unknown to many teachers, especially those in the field of English as a Second Language (ESL). The purpose of this paper is to provide an overview of the nature of this disorder and the current remedial methods and techniques being used. It also points out some of the discrepancies that exist between theory (the treatment that a child would ideally receive), and reality; this is …
