A Consideration Of The Relationship Between Memory As Measured By The Stanford-Binet And Reading Achievement As Measured By The California Reading Achievement Test At The Fifth Grade Level, Alfred Owen Fonkalsrud

Student Work

In the remote past the reading of written and printed symbols had Its origin when man first began to use pictures and other characters to send messages and to record events. It occurred very slowly and took a lot of effort to change from picture writing to the use of letters In representing specific sounds.

The Egyptians as early as twenty-five centuries before Christ had analysed words and syllables into sounds and had developed a series of symbols to represent them. As a result of the ingenuity of the Semites these sounds and symbols were the beginning of the Phoenician …

The Degree Of Localization Of Function For Handedness In The Rat, Jeanne Rivoire Sep 1957

The Degree Of Localization Of Function For Handedness In The Rat, Jeanne Rivoire

Psychology ETDs

Statement of the problem. Peterson and Fracoral (1938) studied Localization of the handedness area in ambidextrous rate by the technique of the thermocautery destruction. By this process they were able to locate a small area for handedness, situated at approximately 250 microns posterior to the genu of the corpus callosum and lying directly over the caudate nucleus. Destruction of this area produced transfers of handedness in their rats.

However, this method of locating a specific structural area by finding a common area for a group of animals is at best relatively crude because of the variation in individual animals.

Survey Of Student Opinion Toward Desegregation At The University Of Tennessee, Barbara Stone Aug 1957

Survey Of Student Opinion Toward Desegregation At The University Of Tennessee, Barbara Stone

Masters Theses

The South is currently undergoing a period of transition for the traditional values, basic to a southern way of life, were upset by the 1954 Supreme Court decision concerning the desegregation of public schools. This ruling intensified the conflict between these traditional beliefs and attitudes of white supremacy and the fundamental principles of Christianity and democracy. Such conflict will not easily be resolved because it inevitably involves emotional behaviors which are not subject to logic or reason. The decision of the Supreme Court permitted the process of desegregation to be worked out by the local educational boards with all possible …

Populist Fusion Movements As An Instrument Of Political Reform, 1890-1900, Lee A. Dew

Electronic Theses & Dissertations

The importance of the People's Party of the 1890's is not to be found in the record of the party itself, but the effect which the existence of the party had on the two major political organizations, and the significant contributions made by ex-Populists who returned to the old parties after obtaining a liberal education in Populism. Beginning with the election of 1890, and continuing through the election of 1896, the Populist party became progressively more important in American politics as the agent of the dissatisfied American farmer unwilling to realize and unable to adjust to the new conditions of …

An Ethnological Study Of Tortugas, New Mexico, Alan James Oppenheimer May 1957

An Ethnological Study Of Tortugas, New Mexico, Alan James Oppenheimer

Anthropology ETDs

The village of Tortugas, New Mexico consists of an amalgam of Tiwa-Piro, Spanish-American, Anglo-American, and Mexican Indian cultural elements. These varied influences have been reformulated and unified into a meaningful and peculiarly individual pattern. For this reason the village presents an interesting laboratory for the study of cultural dynamics.

Tortugas was originally settled primarily by Tiwas. At present, however, Tortugas culture is very different from that of the other pueblos. Some cultural factors in history must be responsible for this divergence. An attempt has been made throughout to compare Tortugas culture with other Indian groups, especially Isleta and, where data …

Recruitment In Bernalillo County Of Major Party Candidates For The State Legislature, Dorothy Jean Powell May 1957

Recruitment In Bernalillo County Of Major Party Candidates For The State Legislature, Dorothy Jean Powell

Political Science ETDs

Politics is a great game of sorts no matter where it is played. In New Mexico it is played in the open. Very little skullduggery is totally hidden from view. And it is not a superior press which keeps it this way. It is the general interest of New Mexicans in their politics. New Mexicans are not bored with politics. Perhaps because men are so sparse they each feel they have a greater voice in government. Perhaps the Spanish and Mexican heritage has much to do with it. In colonial and territorial days the governor was an import, but subordinate …

Political Behavior In A Time Of Crisis, 1865-1905, John Cameron May 1957

Political Behavior In A Time Of Crisis, 1865-1905, John Cameron

Senior Scholar Papers

This study has attenpted to explain the nature of the institutions from 1865-1905 that made it inevitable that manipulators of persons on the grand scale should emerge to take control where there was, temporarily, a political-sccial vacuum to be filled. A nation of individuals., accustomed to the idea that each person must fend for himself as an independent unit, moved into an age of interdependence. The people, however. were slow to recognize this fact and slow to organize the institutions which such an era required. Ray Stannard Baker in his American Chronicle has caught the feelings of the average man …

A Performance Analysis Of The Upper And Lower 20% Of A Senior High School Group Compared On Tests Of Interest, Personality And Achievement, Richard E. Jensen

Student Work

Since early civilization man has been faced with a multitude of situations demanding that he make a decision or choice on which a future course of action or behavior will be based. We might correctly assume that decisions made by people have never been of such simplicity that they created no tension.

Civilization has become progressively more complicated, and thus more alternatives are present from which a person must choose, In the earliest days of man’s existence, decisions were of the simplest and most fundamental nature, Man’s decisions and choices ware, for the most part, governed by a few biological …

Courses For Managerial Training As Recommended By Managers Of Selected Utah Industries, B. Edward Lepper

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The United States is a growing nation; it is also an industrial nation. In the past century the spinning wheel has given way to the large clothing mills; a great network of miles and miles of electric power lines has replaced the kerosene lamp and provided power for work that was for years done by hand. Small horse-drawn earth moving equipment has given way to giant motor-driven bulldozers and transportation has progressed from the pony express and stagecoach to the huge trans-ocean airliners that make any spot on the globe only a matter of hours away. In like manner colleges …
