Possible Factors Influencing Music Preference, Isabella M. Pinto Aug 1949

Possible Factors Influencing Music Preference, Isabella M. Pinto

Psychology ETDs

The purpose of this study is to determine factors influencing musical preference. The most important factor related to preference for classical music is thought by some to be the cultural background of the listener. According to Lazersfeld, "there is probably no question so sensitive to socialize differences as listening to serious music." This is consistent with the opinion of musicians and music critics who state that discriminating musical taste is a result of frequent listening to good music.

A Partial Study Of The Statutes Dealing With Permanent Registration In New Mexico, Harold W. Lincoln Aug 1949

A Partial Study Of The Statutes Dealing With Permanent Registration In New Mexico, Harold W. Lincoln

Political Science ETDs

New Mexico has had the permanent registration law on its statute books for the past ten years. An inventory of the law and its administration clearly shows that the system established is a marked improvement over the faulty system that is supplanted.

From the facts developed by this study the writer has no hesitancy in saying that certain conditions connected with the registration machinery are not statuary and conductive to good government.

The most serious defects are: (a) cancellation and purging of voting lists are being neglected; (b) registration officers are not clothed with the authority to use all the …

The Prehistoric Population And Architecture Of The Cebolleta Mesa Region, Central Western New Mexico, Alfred E. Dittert Jr.

Anthropology ETDs

During the summers of 1947 and 1948, investigations were conducted in the Cebolleta Mesa area, the center of which is located twenty miles south of Grants, New Mexico. A site survey and a series of excavations were conducted around Los Betios Canyon which lies near the southern boundary of the area.

As a result of the investigation, it was determined that the area was occupied by an Anasazi population during recent archaeological times. The sites and pottery reported appear to occupy a time span, in approximate figures, from 800 A.D. to 1400 A.D.

The occupation of the region studied includes …

A Theory Of The Consumer Cooperative Unit In The Free-Exchange Economy, Ralph N. Calkins May 1949

A Theory Of The Consumer Cooperative Unit In The Free-Exchange Economy, Ralph N. Calkins

Economics ETDs

The construction of the voluntary associations leading to cooperative socialism in a free-exchange economy offers a complex, but intriguing problem. This complexity arises from the joint difficulties of the politico-economic cooperative philosophy and the relations of the associative business unit to the generally uncontrolled economy. Because of the century-long accumulation of ideals and practical policy, there is today no simple way of outlining the precepts of Cooperatism, the philosophy of cooperation. For reasons that will appear soon, a chronological approach was required first, and an integrated approach was later adopted.

Problems Arising From The Surface Occurrence Of Archaeological Material In Southeastern Chihuahua, Mexico, Garland J. Marrs

Anthropology ETDs

The specific problems which arise in the Chihuahua area, in light of the present developments of American archaeology are:

1. What validity is there in the techniques heretofore used in the chronological placement of archaeological materials gathered from the surface of the earth?

2. What are the implications of the distribution of the different types of specimens recovered from the Bolson de Mapimi terraces?

3. To what archaeological horizons, and to what prehistoric periods, may we assign this material?

4. To what extent do the specimens recovered thus far compare topologically to those already described from like sites and periods? …

Western Apache Subsistence Economy, Winfred Buskirk May 1949

Western Apache Subsistence Economy, Winfred Buskirk

Anthropology ETDs

The central problem of this thesis is an examination of the factors which influence and, in the past, have shaped the subsistence economy of the Western Apache. Anthropology has always been interested in questions of cultural relationships and contrasts and the process by which the relationships and contrasts are established. This tribe is peculiarly strategic for such a study because of its mixed subsistence pattern, based upon agriculture as well as upon hunting and the gathering of wild food plants. Some groups of Western Apache rely primarily upon agriculture, while others depend more heavily upon hunting and gathering for their …

Influence On Handedness Of Local Application Of Acetylcholine With Dfp And Glycine To Cerebral Cortex Of The Rat, Joseph W. Rigney Jan 1949

Influence On Handedness Of Local Application Of Acetylcholine With Dfp And Glycine To Cerebral Cortex Of The Rat, Joseph W. Rigney

Psychology ETDs

The behavior of an organism is the result of functioning of organic structures. Practice modifies behavior. It is not unreasonable to expect, then, that practice also modifies the structures responsible for the behavior.

In recent years, the metabolism of the nerve impulse has received much attention from neurophysiologists. This is particularly true of those workers who adhere to the theory of chemical meditation, which arose out of the discovery that an ester, acetylcholine, is liberated at the synapses and myoneural junctions within the parasympathetic system. As a result of this interest, today there is much evidence that acetylcholine is closely …
