Indonesian Journal Of Applied Linguistics: A Bibliometric Portrait Of Ten Publication Years, Abdul Syahid
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Bibliometric portraits of a single journal appear to be rarely taken in the field of applied linguistics. Viewed from the angles of publication, citation, and indexation, one of the journals worth a bibliometric portrait is the Indonesian Journal of Applied Linguistics. Casting local and regional concerns on the global applied linguistics, the journal has ranked among the big five Open Access Journals in the Asiatic region since its foundation in 2011. Capturing a corpus of 426 documents by 824 authors from 144 organizations through two free bibliometric tools, i.e. Publish or Perish and VOSviewer, this study portrays the journal …

A comprehensive citation analysis-based methodology for selecting the world scientific serials to be included in information environment for researchers in a specific natural or technical science is featured. The case study was fulfilled for serials to be included in information environment for researchers in optoelectronics and optical systems (OOS) with the use of Journal Citation Reports (JCR) data. The indices taken for serials evaluation were: total citedness of a serial in the selected journals specialized in OOS; the “discipline impact factor” (Hirst 1978) i.e. the impact factor which numerator is the magnitude of a serial citedness not by all the …

Working Together: Journal Of Western Archives & Western Roundups, Tom D. Sommer
Library Faculty Presentations
The idea of a Journal of Western Archives began in the early 2000s after plans were being made for a super regional meeting in Las Vegas, NV. It was during this collaborative time that University Archivists Gordon Daines proposed an idea to then Conference of Inter-Mountain Archivists President John Murphy. Gordon wanted to establish a journal that would be for archivists working in the western United States. He noticed that as a researcher himself at BYU that archivists in the western United States didn’t publish as much as archivists in the eastern United States.
In 2002, Gordon approached CIMA about …

Focusing on the use of popular magazines in interpersonal communication instruction, this paper argues that such magazines can provide a rich source for application and criticism of interpersonal communication processes in everyday life. The first section of the paper reviews research and criticism dealing with the content of magazine articles that offer advice on interpersonal relationships and related topics, noting that such research and criticism are rare in the field. The second section provides a framework for integrating popular literature into the interpersonal course by discussing three methods of integration: critique application, discussion application, and role-play application. The third section …

John Cleave's Weekly Police Gazette (1834-6), Francis Place, And The Pragmatics Of The Unstamped Press, Edward Jacobs
English Faculty Publications
John Cleave (c.1790-c.1847) was the editor and publisher of, among other works, Cleaves Weekly Police Gazette (1834-6; hereafter WPG), which was by most accounts the best-selling unstamped newspaper of the so-called "War of the Unstamped Press" in the 1830s, one of the first unstamped papers to adopt a broadsheet format like stamped papers, and one of the first to mix political news with coverage of non-political events like sensational crimes and strange occurrences. As Joel Wiener and Patricia Hollis note, less is known about Cleave than about most of the other major figures in the unstamped movement, like William Carpenter, …

The Politicization Of Everyday Life In Cleave's Weekly Police Gazette (1834-36), Edward Jacobs
The Politicization Of Everyday Life In Cleave's Weekly Police Gazette (1834-36), Edward Jacobs
English Faculty Publications
With circulation as high as 40,000, Cleave's Weekly Police Gazette, published 1834–36, was one of the first and most popular unstamped newspapers to mix political news with coverage of non-political events like sensational crimes, strange occurrences, and excerpts from popular fiction. Scholars have differed widely in their interpretations of the fact that the paper's mixture of radical politics and "entertainment" outsold unstamped papers that offered undiluted political news, such as Hetherington's Poor Man's Guardian (1831–35), whose circulation peaked at around 16,000. Some, like Louis James and Virginia Berridge, argue that Cleave's helped to co-opt legitimate working-class political discourse by …

Himmelfarb Library Faculty Posters and Presentations
This poster reports on a project initiated to establish a framework for evaluating our serials collection in order to preserve the collection from a flat budget and ever increasing serial costs and to meet patron demand for expanded access to electronic resources. An additional outcome was the development of a combined print and electronic serials collection development policy. A Journals Committee was formed to assess the value and most appropriate format(s) of individual journal titles. Methods used included a mathematical formula calculating a title's relative value and a faculty survey soliciting most-used titles and preferred format. Faculty department heads were …

PRINT STILL PREDOMINATES in journal publishing, but that role may soon fade. Too slowly or too quickly, steadily or in fits and starts (depending on your perspective and patience level), scholarly journals are moving toward reliance on digital forms. This is happening in part because librarians, scholars, and even some publishers are unhappy about the current state of print journals.
Diversity In Collection Development: Comparing Access Strategies To Alternative Press Periodicals, Deborah Lafond, Mary Van Ullen, Richard Irving
Diversity In Collection Development: Comparing Access Strategies To Alternative Press Periodicals, Deborah Lafond, Mary Van Ullen, Richard Irving
University Libraries Faculty Scholarship
A study by researchers from the State University of New York at Albany compared the efficacy of various strategies for providing access to nonmainstream periodicals listed in the Alternative Press Index. The strategies that were compared included the regular local subscription approach, resource-sharing consortia that include expedited interlibrary loan systems, and four electronic full-text periodical products. Although electronic full-text packages were found to provide some added access to nonmainstream journals, results revealed that much greater access was provided by participation in resource-sharing networks.

Describes an easy method to identify serials for cancellation based on usage data and inflation rates, both which can be extracted from online library management systems such as NOTIS. Data can be imported in to a Microsoft Access database and after simple calculations are, the database can be searched for high inflation/low use titles. These titles serve as the preliminary cancellation list.
