According to a National Academy of Sciences working group investigating the mental health crises in higher education, student wellbeing is an issue that needs to be addressed at the campus level, not siloed in specified departments and units. University libraries can be an integral part of student wellness initiatives, and this poster presentation will present one academic library’s engagement in student wellness initiatives. This poster will:
-
Highlight the ways campus partnerships facilitated streamlined library engagement in student wellness
-
Identify student centric initiatives and acquisitions
-
Identify funding sources used for those initiatives and acquisitions
-
Discuss outcomes of library wellness initiatives.

Objective: We sought to identify trends and themes in how academic health sciences libraries in the United States, Canada and Mexico have supported engagement and outreach with Native Americans, Alaska Natives, First Nations, and Indigenous peoples, in or from those same countries. We also sought to learn and share effective practices for libraries engaging with these communities.
Methods: We conducted a scoping review utilizing Arksey and O’Malley’s framework for scoping reviews and followed principles from JBI Manual for Evidence Synthesis. We searched seven bibliographic databases, E-LIS (Eprints in Library and Information Science repository), and multiple sources of grey literature. Results …

Who do we aim to educate with primate conservation education programs (PCEPs)? In a commentary published in a recent AJP, Annette Lanjouw suggested that many efforts to “educate” habitat-country communities can be neocolonial in their approaches. Forest destruction and habitat loss are a result of global consumption and expansion. We therefore need to approach conservation education from many angles including local stakeholders, policy makers, government officials, and the humans living in industrialized nations who are major consumers of the items that shrink primate habitats. In this review, we investigate PCEPs to determine if the conservation education goals, education methods, and …

Libraries are reinventing themselves to stay relevant. As librarians, we recognize the need to be creative to facilitate student learning in the digital age. In February 2023, the Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar library tested a new outreach program in collaboration with the Robotics club. It was intended for the whole community but primarily for students from majors other than computer science, and relatively unfamiliar with coding and AI concepts. The purpose was to bring more students to the library, let them connect with each other, see a hi-tech side of library resources, try new things, engage with simple coding …

The Managing Information Services Outcomes (MISO) Survey was originally developed in 2005 at Bryn Mawr College in Pennsylvania, USA by staff from a consortium of higher education institutions to assess library and technology services using a single instrument. Since then, the survey has grown and changed under the collaborative management of an all-volunteer team of library and IT professionals from various participating institutions throughout the United States. The survey has been implemented at 171 institutions. This chapter reviews the guiding principles, ongoing partnerships, and the value of working across departments, across campuses, and across cohorts of participating institutions to leverage …

Outreach and instruction librarians at the University of New Mexico, Main Campus launched the asynchronous, online Virtual Open House program during the 2021 lockdown in order to transition from “before-times” in-person tours to the paradigm of fully remote services. After a successful pilot, the program has continued as a sustainable, longer-term solution to staffing constraints even after University Libraries reopened to the public. This file collection captures planning documents and other program artifacts that will prove useful in replicating this event at other libraries.

Background: Designed in 2012 with a first implementation in 2013, NE STEM 4U is a professional development program for post-secondary students/undergraduates, and serves as a source of outreach, content knowledge generation, and STEM literacy for youth in grades kindergarten through 8th grade (ages 5–14). The model empowers post-secondary students as facilitators of inquiry-based learning within the context of an out-of-school time program. This study investigated the potential for replicating or ‘franchising’ this model by evaluating on the following: (1) Is the model replicable? And, if so, (2) what core elements are necessary for program fidelity? And (3) is there …

This practical article explores the challenges and unexpected benefits discovered when a public regional academic library transitioned its engagement and outreach efforts to a fully online format. The onset of COVID-19 presented a need for a radical change to Central Washington University Libraries’ events and social media communication. While adhering to the core principles of library outreach and engagement, the library has shifted the modality and types of programming offered to meet safety guidelines. Online event assessment, promotion, and engagement will also be discussed.

This case study of using a webinar series as a library marketing technique shares the process, communications, and assessment results from a well-attended online event, “Summer of Citations.” An in-person citation management software workshop for graduate students by librarians at a small midwestern private university served as a springboard for the series. Targeted to faculty, graduate students, and undergraduate honors students, the Zoom-based, 45-minute sessions covered a different product on each of three successive days. A common structure for each presentation, along with the use of Springshare modules for registration and assessment, facilitated the event’s rapid production and easy replication.

As the University of New Mexico responded to the coronavirus pandemic during the spring and summer of 2020, the University Libraries piloted enhanced virtual outreach initiatives, including an online event series and scaled-up social media activity. The Summer of Sci Fi (SoSF) consisted of three Zoom-facilitated programs that offered fun activities designed to engage a socially distanced campus community while highlighting various library resources. Numerous “quick pivots” were necessary to accommodate unpredictable circumstances throughout the pilot implementation. This experience has demonstrated the advantages of approaching outreach with an agile stance, particularly during a crisis.

Since 2017, ORCID outreach at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas has stagnated due to insufficient staffing. A new librarian was tasked in early 2020 with facilitating new ORCID campus outreach and education with campus researchers. Simultaneously, the COVID-19 pandemic caused the university campus to shut down, which significantly limited the ability to forge relationships and outreach. Despite these challenges, the new librarian managed to rebuild campus partnerships, establish relationships with library colleagues, and develop an outreach plan that focused on creating virtual services such as workshops and on expanding digital resources such as LibGuides and tutorials to reach faculty …

COVID-19 forced workers around the world to face the realities of closed buildings, precarious employment situations, and challenges to their well-being. This article will showcase how library workers’ resilience during COVID-19 depended on people, not buildings, and a people-first public relations strategy was employed to reveal that distinction. The authors, a team of librarians and communicators, share three pandemic-era communication stories developed to put people at the forefront of initiatives and messaging: a revamped marketing strategy for a research appointment service puts faces to the work and student support; the cancellation announcement of a beloved annual event reveals how the …

In Spring 2016, a phone call arrived at the Rayfield Archives from the demolition site of an Illinois State University campus dormitory. Workers at the site had uncovered a time capsule and didn’t know where to send it. In the following months, the Rayfield Archives partnered with ISU units, including Marketing and Facilities, to promote the find and redirect a narrative of the sad loss of a dormitory to one of renewal and discovery. The work to triage the damaged capsule materials and make them immediately accessible was made all the more exciting by a second surprise time capsule discovery. …

As the University of New Mexico responded to the coronavirus pandemic with emergency building closures and a shift to online services, the University Libraries faced challenges making and maintaining personal connections with users in the absence of face-to-face contact. Recognizing that necessary public health restrictions isolated all students, faculty, and staff to some extent, a science librarian and an English librarian collaborated to develop a series of three Zoom-facilitated programs that provided fun activities (i.e., a movie watch party, a book discussion, and a team trivia game) to engage a socially distanced campus community while highlighting various library resources.
