The study, conducted with participants from various organizations recruited via the Amazon Mechanical Turk (M-Turk) platform, delved into three key CSR dimensions: Discretionary, Ethical, and Economic Responsibility. Mutual Fund Stewardship And The Empty Voting Problem, Jill E. Fisch

All Faculty Scholarship

When Roberta Karmel wrote the articles that are the subject of this symposium, she was skeptical of both the potential value of shareholder voting and the emerging involvement of institutional investors in corporate governance. In the ensuing years, both the increased role and engagement of institutional investors and the heightened importance of shareholder voting offer new reasons to take Professor Karmel’s concerns seriously. Institutional investors have taken on a broader range of issues ranging from diversity and political spending to climate change and human capital management, and their ability to influence corporate policy on these issues has become more significant. …

Donald J. Trump: The Second Coming Of Andrew Jackson?, Kevin Elijah Fair

Political Science Capstone Research Papers

Since the election of Donald J. Trump to the U.S. Presidency in 2016, many political scientists have been searching for a complete and holistic understanding of how Mr. Trump was able to accomplish what seemed to be an impossible feat. There is no question that Trump utilized a wave of populism for his 2016 victory, but what kind of populism did Trump use in his campaign? After researching and reviewing what other scholars have written, Trump utilized the Jacksonian tradition of populism in 2016. However, this raised the follow-up question: how was he able to utilize Jacksonianism? Some contemporary historians …

Exploring The Economic Resilience In The United States Through State Gdp Output, Mariya Pominova Aug 2018

Exploring The Economic Resilience In The United States Through State Gdp Output, Mariya Pominova

Honors College

Economic resilience is a rising topic in the field of economics. Although there is no standard definition, most literature suggests that the concept of regional economic resilience converged to encapsulate a region’s ability to resist, recover from, and restructure itself after an economic or environmental shock. There are a multitude of methods in the literature used to measure economic resilience. All of these methods utilize either GDP, employment, or a combination of both. While both GDP and employment cycles are powerful tools for measuring the impact of a recession on an economy, they measure vastly different things and neither fully …

Economic Operation Optimization Of Battery Energy Storage Systems In A Solar Rich Microgrid, Herath Pathiranage Asanga Priyankara Jayawardana, Massimo Fiorentini, Duane A. Robinson, Ashish P. Agalgaonkar

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

The increasing trend of connecting local distributed generation units to the grid has unlocked new economic opportunities for owners. This is supported by the ongoing development of energy storage technologies, especially battery based systems. In practice, battery storage systems typically operate based on control algorithms where tariff structures and future generation and load profiles are not taken into account. This paper investigates the results of a case study for a microgrid using a proposed optimization model which minimizes cost by considering an import/export tariff structure. The effect of changing time resolution related to variations in demand and generation is examined, …

Watershed Sciences Faculty Publications

PRELUDE

On June 26, 2012 a lightning strike ignited a wildfire in the Manti-La Sal National Forest of central Utah’s Carbon and Emery counties (Figure P.1). By the time the Seeley wildfire was contained three weeks later, some 48,000 acres of federal, state, and private land had been burned and $8.7 million in suppression costs expended (Styler 2012). According to the Monitoring Trends in Burn Severity (MTBS.gov) project, nearly one-third of the acreage was severely burned, damaging vegetation and soils for years to come. Severe burns vastly increase the erosion potential of burnt landscapes, and the steep lands of Huntington …

In order to access research published in a non-open access publication, readers must either be affiliated with an institution that subscribes to the publication, purchase an individual subscription, or pay to view/rent a particular article. Taking Scholarship@Western as a case in point, the second speaker will demonstrate the global impact of open access research. Because the content published in Scholarship@Western is indexed by Google and Google Scholar, researchers all around the …

International Lessons For The Future Spatial Direction For Ireland: Aspects Of Agglomeration And Their Influences On The Economic Role Of Cities, Brian Hughes

Conference papers

Ireland’s demography in the world context is unique. Its population count remains the same as it was some 200 years ago and yet it has experienced profound movements. This paper contrasts Ireland’s changing demography with that of Japan since the 1840’s, for these the two offshore nations, located off either end of the Eurasian land mass. Historic urban literature identifies that governmental policies towards cities and city-based industry and services appears to explain many of these contrasts. In Ireland’s case such policy both prior to and since the formation of the State has been an ambivalent one that has not …

Background: School-based physical education is an important public health initiative as it has the potential to provide students with regular opportunities to participate in moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA). Unfortunately, in many physical education lessons students do not engage in sufficient MVPA to achieve health benefits. In this trial we will test the efficacy of a teacher professional development intervention, delivered partially via the Internet, on secondary school students' MVPA during physical education lessons. Teaching strategies covered in this training are designed to (i) maximize opportunities for students to be physically active during lessons and (ii) enhance students' autonomous motivation towards …

To meet the fast growth of electricity demand, the traditional network solution tends to expand existing substations, build more new substations, and build transmission lines. Distributed Generation (DG) is posed as an alternative method for the network providers not only to accommodate the load increase and relieve network overload, but also to offer other additional technical and economic benefits. This paper addresses the issue of DG planning and has proposed a technique for optimizing the DG size and location to minimize the overall investment and operational cost of the system. The proposed optimization methodology assesses the compatibility of different generation …
