Cosmic Traffic Control For Cedarville Professor At Air Force Academy, Mark D. Weinstein
Cosmic Traffic Control For Cedarville Professor At Air Force Academy, Mark D. Weinstein
News Releases
With the number of satellites traveling around the Earth expected to increase by tens of thousands in the next decade, the work of scientists to properly locate these satellites is extremely important. At least that is the view of Dr. George Landon, professor of computer science at Cedarville University, who was recently named a fellow with the United States Air Force Summer Faculty Fellowship.

Sc-Fuse: A Feature Fusion Approach For Unpaved Road Detection From Remotely Sensed Images, Aniruddh Saxena
Department of Computer Science and Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Road network extraction from remote sensing imagery is crucial for numerous applications, ranging from autonomous navigation to urban and rural planning. A particularly challenging aspect is the detection of unpaved roads, often underrepresented in research and data. These roads display variability in texture, width, shape, and surroundings, making their detection quite complex. This thesis addresses these challenges by creating a specialized dataset and introducing the SC-Fuse model.
Our custom dataset comprises high resolution remote sensing imagery which primarily targets unpaved roads of the American Midwest. To capture the diverse seasonal variation and their impact, the dataset includes images from different …

For Nishant Nedungadi, working on classified government projects in a physics laboratory was not necessarily what he envisioned when he pursued a degree in computer science at Cedarville University. But after two summer internships with John Hopkins University’s Applied Physics Laboratory, Nedungadi has accepted a full-time position with the prestigious research facility. Nedungadi will graduate from Cedarville University on Saturday, May 6.

Recent advances in computer vision (CV) and natural language processing have been driven by exploiting big data on practical applications. However, these research fields are still limited by the sheer volume, versatility, and diversity of the available datasets. CV tasks, such as image captioning, which has primarily been carried out on natural images, still struggle to produce accurate and meaningful captions on sketched images often included in scientific and technical documents. The advancement of other tasks such as 3D reconstruction from 2D images requires larger datasets with multiple viewpoints. We introduce DeepPatent2, a large-scale dataset, providing more than 2.7 million …

Web archive collections are created with a particular purpose in mind. A curator selects seeds, or original resources, which are then captured by an archiving system and stored as archived web pages, or mementos. The systems that build web archive collections are often configured to revisit the same original resource multiple times. This is incredibly useful for understanding an unfolding news story or the evolution of an organization. Unfortunately, over time, some of these original resources can go off-topic and no longer suit the purpose for which the collection was originally created. They can go off-topic due to web site …

The Impact Of Twitter On The National Hockey League And Its Players, Benjamin Strauss
Honors Projects in Data Science
This study offers a new perspective on collecting and analyzing Twitter data surrounding the National Hockey League (NHL) to identify any trends or relationships between the data and overall performance during the 2021 abbreviated season. This paper provides and in-depth analysis by studying a sample of sixty of the top NHL players, specifically those who are typically top performers in the league, spanning over all thirty-one teams and all positions, this study was able to identify a deeper and broader perspective of what implications can be drawn from analyzing data from Twitter to both predict and reflect both individual player …

Background and context
Promoting open-ended projects presents new opportunities and challenges for inclusive teaching in CS classrooms. While efforts have been made to develop inclusive curricula, little research has focused on ways teachers apply curricula in their classrooms to promote inclusion.
Objective
To understand the challenges faced in facilitating an open-ended unit and the pedagogical strategies enacted to address those challenges, we analyze the self-reported teaching practices that experienced teachers developed in their implementation of a constructionist electronic textiles unit in Exploring Computer Science.
Method
We inductively analyzed and coded 17 experienced teachers’ weekly surveys and post-interviews.
Findings
Teachers …
