Department of Agricultural Economics: Faculty Publications
Objectives: Gluten free (GF) foods are typically less nutritious and more expensive than their gluten-containing variants, yet people without a diagnosed gluten sensitivity continue to adopt this diet. There is a lack of research about what factors drive people without Celiac disease or non-Celiac gluten sensitivity to follow the GF diet. Methods: A nationally representative sample of 2982 US residents without a diagnosed gluten sensitivity were surveyed about their attitudes, perceptions, and experiences with the GF diet. Logistic regression was used to compare respondents who were currently avoiding or had avoided gluten previously (GF consumer) to respondents who had never …

College Student Perceptions Of Adhd: Links Between Prior Knowledge And Stigma, Caterina Langlois
College Student Perceptions Of Adhd: Links Between Prior Knowledge And Stigma, Caterina Langlois
Senior Honors Theses
Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is characterized by persistent inattention, which might or might not accompany hyperactivity and impulsivity, that noticeably interferes with functioning and development in at least two settings. It is a commonly diagnosed childhood mental health disorder. Public knowledge and attitudes towards ADHD are an important consideration for those who are going to potentially be working with that population. Research has shown older children and parents may attribute ADHD behavior to poor social skills or immaturity. Teachers often report feeling unprepared to have a student with ADHD and would like more training. Some research has shown the …

Changes In Globalization: How Should Ib Education Respond?, Nancy R. Buchan, Elizabeth C. Ravlin, Orgul D. Ozturk
Faculty Publications
A new phase of globalization has made the world cognizant of the job losses, inequality of gains across countries and socio-economic sectors, and climate degradation that has resulted from prior global business practices. We examine what changes international business (IB) education should consider as these patterns evolve. Non-routine analytical skills and global interpersonal skills will still be important in the changing economy. However, evidence suggests that IB education should also emphasize broader knowledge of politics, institutions, sociology, and anthropology in order to help future business leaders navigate and balance the increasingly complex requirements of both local and global stakeholder interests.

Improving Knowledge In A Prison Without Walls Analysing The Effectiveness Of The Mine Risk Education Activities Of [Organisation X] In Syria, Arnaud Loman
Global CWD Repository
The extensive use of mines and explosives in Syria pose a threat on all the lives of the conflict-affected population. To ensure that the population has the necessary knowledge and skills to protect themselves from this existing threat, diverse humanitarian mine action organisations, including [organisation X], design and implement mine risk education (MRE) activities. However, the number of beneficiaries reached with MRE alone does not adequately reflect the impact of the activities. There is a lack of data whether these achievements enhance the well-being of the people in communities that are affected by explosive hazards, especially in the ongoing conflict …

An Empirical Study Of Librarians And Libraries As Drivers Of Access To Knowledge In Ebonyi State, Nigeria, Emmanuel Chidiadi Onwubiko
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
The library from inception plays a very crucial role in the extension and modification of knowledge. The growing need for knowledge management has influenced every component and operation of a library. This is built on the fact that it is only by transmission of knowledge by each succeeding generation can civilization maintain itself and make advance upon the knowledge of the past. The individual and social meaning of education can only take place on the backdrop of beliefs and values of a particular social setting. In both, the library has a crucial role to play. The library we know is …

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B
Introduction: A large volume of clinical care data has been generated for managing agitation in dementia. However, the valuable information in these data has not been used effectively to generate insights for improving the quality of care. Application of artificial intelligence technologies offers us enormous opportunities to reuse these data. For health data science to achieve this, this study focuses on using ontology to coding clinical knowledge for non-pharmacological treatment of agitation in a machine-readable format. Methods: The resultant ontology—Dementia-Related Agitation Non-Pharmacological Treatment Ontology (DRANPTO)—was developed using a method adopted from the NeOn methodology. Results: DRANPTO consisted of 569 concepts …

Attention-Based Knowledge Tracing With Heterogeneous Information Network Embedding, Nan Zhang, Ye Du, Ke Deng, Li Li, Jun Shen, Geng Sun
Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B
Knowledge tracing is a key area of research contributing to personalized education. In recent times, deep knowledge tracing has achieved great success. However, the sparsity of students’ practice data still limits the performance and application of knowledge tracing. An additional complication is that the contribution of the answer record to the current knowledge state is different at each time step. To solve these problems, we propose Attention-based Knowledge Tracing with Heterogeneous Information Network Embedding (AKTHE). First, we describe questions and their attributes with a heterogeneous information network and generate meaningful node embeddings. Second, we capture the relevance of historical data …
Data Governance And The Emerging University, Michael J. Madison
Data Governance And The Emerging University, Michael J. Madison
Book Chapters
Knowledge and information governance questions are tractable primarily in institutional terms, rather than in terms of abstractions such as knowledge itself or individual or social interests. This chapter offers the modern research university as an example. Practices of data-intensive research by university-based researchers, sometimes reduced to the popular phrase “Big Data,” pose governance challenges for the university. The chapter situates those challenges in the traditional understanding of the university as an institution for understanding forms and flows of knowledge. At a broad level, the chapter argues that the new salience of data exposes emerging shifts in the social, cultural, and …
