Ouachita To Host Annual A Festival Of Christmas Dec. 2 And 3, Erin Jackson, Ouachita News Bureau

Ouachita Baptist University’s School of Fine Arts will present A Festival of Christmas on Dec. 2 and 3 at 7:30 p.m. in Jones Performing Arts Center. The theme for the 25^th annual musical production is “The Spirit of Christmas!”

Ouachita vocal ensembles Concert Choir, Ouachita Singers, Women’s Chorus and Ouachita Sounds will all be featured in the performance. Assisting Ouachita’s student performers will be local children in the Ouachita Honor Choir and Ouachita’s Handbell Ringers. The pit band will feature students from Ouachita’s instrumental program.

Ouachita Baptist University’s School of Fine Arts will present its 20^th annual A Service of Lessons and Carols on Tuesday, Dec. 6, at 7:30 p.m. in Mabee Fine Arts Center’s McBeth Recital Hall. The service is free and open to the public.

The service features nine scripture readings from the books of Genesis, Isaiah, Matthew, Luke and John. Each reading is followed by a carol that reflects Advent and Christmas themes. Ian Cosh, vice president for community and international engagement, will serve as this year’s narrator.

Ouachita Hosts Southern Region Nats Conference; 13 Obu Students Named Finalists, Stephanie Bell, Ouachita News Bureau

Ouachita Baptist University recently hosted the 41^st annual Southern Region NATS (National Association of Teachers of Singing) Conference and Student Auditions on the university’s Arkadelphia campus. Approximately 25 schools were represented from Arkansas, Louisiana and Mississippi.

Thirteen Ouachita students were named finalists in the event, the largest number of finalists for any school in the competition. The finalists included two Ouachita students who were honored in two separate categories each for a total of 15 finalist recognitions.

Michael is a originally from Philadelphia, PA, and is a current junior here at Gettysburg College, majoring in Sociology. Michael is also involved with the Bias Response Team and works as a Residence Coordinator.

The choice of music, an essential element of worship and church life, must be addressed in cross-cultural church planting contexts. As cultures evolve, church planters are faced with choices about musical styles that may lead to interpersonal conflicts within the church. The purpose of this study is to empirically examine factors that may enable cross-cultural church planters to constructively manage music-related conflicts when they arise. Members of church plants, like all people, have various goals when entering into such conflicts. They are concerned about the content of the conflict (i.e., the musical style) and thus have content goals. They are …

In 1920s-30s São Paulo, Brazil, leaders of the vanguard artistic movement known as “modernism” began to argue that national identity came not from shared values or even cultural practices but rather by a shared way of thinking, which they variously designated as Brazil’s “racial psychology,” “folkloric unconscious,” and “national psychology.” Building on turn-of-the-century psychological and anthropological theories, the group diagnosed Brazil’s national mind as characterized by “primitivity” and in need of a program of psychological development. This thesis examines the history and persuasive power of rhetoric through the mass medium of popular music from Woody Guthrie to the modern era. It focuses on the Vietnam War era as a particularly significant and prolific era of topical (“protest”) music. Through interviews with media observers, historians and veterans of the Vietnam war, it seeks to understand the relevance of rhetorical speech in music within an overall mass media context, both within that era and extending to the present day. Industry research has focused on the informational processing model, which measures how effective an advertisement is based on recall and understanding. Focusing on Bosnia, Croatia, and Serbia, this article examines film and music that emerged in the region since the end of the Yugoslav Wars of Succession. We analyze how the uncertainties of the postwar era facilitated a dynamic field of cultural contestation in which the music and film industries simultaneously challenge and affirm normative masculine sociocultural roles. Although traditional norms have not lost their primacy in public life, we emphasize the fact that attitudes toward masculinity have, in general, become increasingly ambiguous and multivalent. Moving along to the beat of music is a universal human trait. It is a behaviour that displays the interaction between auditory and motor systems during beat perception. While several studies demonstrate that motor structures are involved in beat perception, the time course of motor system excitability during beat perception is not well understood. To examine the time course of motor system excitability in beat perception, we stimulated the motor cortex with transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and measured the amplitude of the corresponding motor evoked potentials from the first dorsal interosseous (FDI) muscle while participants listened to rhythms that induced …

Three faculty librarians, the communication coordinator, and the metadata and digital resources coordinator of the Western Michigan University Libraries arranged events for the celebration, including instrumental and vocal music performances. We aimed to include as many performers from as many units on campus as we could in order to increase the University Libraries’ visibility, and to make diverse campus units aware of the kinds of performances done in other parts of the University.

This essay examines Perth as portrayed through the lyrics of popular songs written by people who grew up in the city. These lyrics tend to reproduce the dominant myths about the city: that it is isolated, that it is self-satisfied, that little happens there. Perth became the focus of song lyrics during the late 1970s time of punk with titles such as 'Arsehole of the Universe' and 'Perth Is a Culture Shock'. Even the Eurogliders' 1984 hit, 'Heaven Must Be There', is based on a rejection of life in Perth. However, Perth was also home to Dave Warner, whose songs …

The present project uses cooperative learning strategies that requires students in large classes to collaborate in applying intellectually challenging articles on place, space, sacred spaces, tourist places, and commodification of place to the development of a video project linking music to place and landscape. As an extension of their group activity, students are teaching each other how to apply concepts from the assigned articles to their projects in creative ways while engaging in critical thinking and exercising their geographical imagination.

This study is an exploration of identity politics through an examination of the ways in which musical artists use the medium of music videos to create marketable, hybrid identities. With the rise of social media and the online consumption of information, music videos play a central role in global, cultural flows. I argue that hybrid identities are constructed by musical artists to gain popularity through the form of ethno-marketing. Results from a number of studies indicate that the use of different types of music can influence cognition and behavior; however, research provides inconsistent results. Considering this, a quasi-experimental study was conducted to identify the existence of statistically significant effects on sectional view drawing ability due to the impacts of music. In particular, the study compared the use of three different types of music; classical, rock, heavy metal and whether a significant difference exists towards sectional view drawing ability, among engineering technology students.
