Technology, Teaching And Faculty : Collaborations That Work, Valla Mclean, Carolee Pollock

In an effort to address both the drawbacks of the one-shot library session and student apathy towards the library, a reference librarian and humanities professor developed a multi-tiered plan to enhance the information literacy learning experience of students. Through just-in-time instruction taught in the students’ classroom through a library resources module in Blackboard embedded in a humanities course this unique collaborative effort transcended space and academic departments. Hear about the benefits and challenges of teaching library skills through point-of-need instruction and innovative technologies such as Blackboard and Camtasia. Walk away with strategies for blended learning and creating collaborative environments.

At this writing (Fall 2011), two-thirds of the faculty in higher education are contingent part-time or full-time. Only one-third of the faculty is tenured or on the tenure-track. This selected, annotated bibliography is organized by year of publication, from 1977 to 2010. (An earlier version was published in 2008.) It is the purpose of this publication to facilitate understanding of the meaning and implications of this major change in the structure of higher education. The City of Kennedale's adoption of the strategic plan, Imagine Kennedale 2015, details several unique opportunities to heighten the City's image with regard to family living and economic development. One of the priority strategies highlighted in the plan focuses on defining the historical identity of Kennedale by recognizing and classifying existing landmarks that have historical significance to the community within a downtown historic district. The framework within the strategic plan emphasizes a community consensus for the appreciation of historic preservation in Kennedale.

What would a “typical” librarian need to know before conducting an interview with a faculty member regarding his/her research data and associated needs in managing or curating this data?

Supported by the Institute of Museum and Library Services, the Purdue University Libraries and the Library School at the University of Illinois conducted research on “Which researchers are willing to share data, when, with whom, and under what conditions?”. The results led to the creation of the Data Curation Profiles (DCP) Toolkit, a semi-structured interview designed to assist librarians in identifying the data management needs of researchers. The objective of this project was to produce an updated municipal personnel policy manual that was clear, precise and ready for the City's review and approval. This was done by evaluating and updating current policies and procedures already in place, assimilating past auditor recommendations to remedy recognized deficiencies, incorporating industry "best practices" already in existence, researching other small to medium sized municipalities' policy collections, and establishing new policies for effective evaluation and management of employee performance.

The intent of this study was to aid academic librarians in examining their perceptions of the future of higher education, engaging disciplinary faculty members to understand their views, and determining actions to take to shape the future. In this mixed methods study, scenarios about the future of higher education served as the basis for collecting quantitative (survey) and qualitative (focus group) data at one institution.
