Bam! Pow! Graphic Novels Fight Stereotypes In Academic Libraries: Supporting, Collecting, Promoting, Beth Jane Toren

This study examines the launch of a graphic novel collection in an academic library and presents a study analyzing the increase of titles in Association of Research Libraries with the subject heading “Graphic Novels” between fall 2008 and fall 2009. Statistics show a 40% increase, averaging 62 additional titles, during a year of global financial crisis. Exploring the prejudice against comics lingering in more traditional corners of academia, this paper encourages librarians to counter stereotypes and therefore bring more people, including other librarians, to view graphic novels as literature. Not only has the use of chat reference created new learning spaces, studies have shown that instruction regularly occurs during the virtual interactions. However, these studies have focused on a single institution’s experience and do not address the additional challenges faced by a consortium of libraries. Ask a UC Librarian, staffed by seven of the ten University of California campuses, is an example of a consortium exploring this new learning space together. We will present the challenges, rewards, and what we have learned in building a supportive literacy learning environment that provides instruction to students via collaborative chat reference.

At Indiana University-Bloomington, the libraries house many rooms that are used for instructional purposes, but none represents the characteristics of an ideal learning environment. In order to address the growing instructional needs of the IUB libraries and the lack of appropriate space in which to provide IL instruction, the libraries created a committee that was charged with making recommendations for new library classrooms. Our successful English as a Second Language (ESL) project at Suffolk County Community College (SCCC) fosters academic literacy by infusing information and computer literacy skills into an advanced speaking course. In our presentation, library and ESL faculty, plus an ESL administrator will share insights on how advanced ESL students construct a demographic study. The demographic assignment requires students to synthesize information and images into oral presentations. Each student’s final project is the culmination of an incremental process that includes four library workshops. Five months before the Fall 2007 semester the Committee on Undergraduate Information Literacy (CUIL) and Vanderbilt Libraries were notified their proposal to present one of the weekly sessions for Vanderbilt Visions, the university’s first-year orientation program, was accepted. 19.4 million fantasy sports players, many college students, rely on information literacy to succeed in fantasy sports leagues, but do not realize it. This session analyzes the connection between fantasy sports and information literacy and how librarians can use fantasy sports to make information literacy meaningful to students. Academic libraries are increasingly collecting e-books, but little research has investigated how students use e-books compared to print texts. This study used a prompted think-aloud method to gain an understanding of the information retrieval behavior of students in both formats. Qualitative analysis identified themes that will inform instruction and collection practices.

During times of tight resources, cultivating the emotional intelligence (EI) of employees at all levels, in all areas of the library, can be a way to maintain service quality, reduce stress, and cope with change. Emotional intelligence includes characteristics such as self-awareness, adaptability, empathy, ability to work collaboratively, and communication skills. While the concept of EI has been a standard component of leadership development and management literature for almost two decades, relatively little research has been done on its applicability in libraries. Three different ways of documenting library value were presented to fourth year landscape architecture students in the UNLV School of Architecture: a contingent valuation survey, a library calculator, and a survey to rate importance and impact of library services and features. Students used the three approaches, then discussed their experiences with the author. Their input suggested improvements in the instruments and provided feedback on possible positive and negative consequences of inviting this kind of valuing. Working with a focused collection and population provided a relatively safe environment to explore concerns about negative consequences.

Georgia State University (GSU) affiliates must swipe their campus ID cards at turnstiles in order to enter the University Library buildings. The swipe verifies the individual is a GSU affiliate and unlocks the turnstile for entry. With each swipe, data such as year in school, major, and GPA are sent to a database. The library partnered with Advanced Campus Services, (ACS), GSU‟s high-performance, research computing unit, to create a tool to access the data. The Wayne State University Library System launched its library mapping application in February 2010, designed to help locate materials in the five WSU libraries. The system works within the catalog to show the location of materials, as well as provides a web form for use at the reference desk. Developed using PHP and MySQL, it requires only minimal effort to update using a unique call number overlay mechanism. In addition to mapping shelved materials, the system provides information for any of the over three hundred collections held by the WSU Libraries. Patrons can do more than just locate a book …

In the fall 2009 semester, the Syracuse University Library launched a pilot program to test two Kindle DX e-book readers as content delivery devices. The pilot objectives included exploring additional options for access to curricular resources that are cost-prohibitive and frequently requested by library users, testing a new technology, i.e., Kindle DX, for delivery of ebooks, gauging user reactions to e-book readers, and using Kindle statistics and user feedback to develop or modify services and technologies. At a 2008 assessment conference, Megan Oakleaf and Lisa Hinchliffe noted that one barrier librarians face when trying to conduct assessment is lack of coordination. This barrier was removed for Golden Gate University's (GGU) librarians when Lisa Kramer was hired as Director of Assessment and Evaluation and made her expertise and support available to us. She helped us understand the difference between program evaluation and learning assessment, and acted as a sounding board in the design of a new assessment study. Video collections have undergone many changes over the recent decades, but have library circulation policies and practices kept up? The historical model for audiovisual collections at colleges and universities has been that of a reserve collection where films were purchased at faculty request as classroom support, held in closed stacks for availability to faculty while student access was limited, and rarely was resource sharing through interlibrary loan allowed. Multicultural E-Resources: An Exploratory Study Of Resources Held By Arl Libraries, Charlene Maxey-Harris

The purpose of this study was to discover what libraries belonging to the Association of Research Libraries are subscribing to in support of multicultural and diversity research. A list of bibliographic and digital collections was created and searched for in the online public access catalogs of academic and research libraries in 2005 and 2008. A list of recommended e-resources was derived based on the ownership of Association of Research Libraries member libraries and Magazine for Libraries 2006 and 2009. During the three-year interval there was a 45.8 percent increase in subscriptions to the multicultural and diversity databases.

Few libraries are strangers to the concept of library consortia – institutional groups that collaborate to purchase software, systems, electronic resources, or other information‐sharing products and services. Most academic libraries are members of at least one consortium, and many belong to multiple consortia. However, consortia vary widely in the services they offer and in how they are structured. This project, carried out in the fall of 2009, focused on a review of academic library consortia that:
