Young Children's Perceptions Of College And Saving: Potential Role Of Child Development Accounts, William Elliott Iii, Margaret Sherrard Sherraden, Lissa Johnson, Baorong Guo

This paper explores young children's perceptions and expectations about attending college, and the potential influence of a savings program on shaping children's perceptions about paying for college. As part of a four-year study of a school-based college savings program called “I Can Save”, this paper uses qualitative evidence from interviews conducted in second and fourth grades with a diverse group of 51 children. Findings suggest that most of the children in the study have a general understanding of college and have begun a process of considering higher education. As youth transition to adulthood, their ability to save and accumulate assets becomes very important as they begin to accept financial responsibilities and plan for the future. In this paper, we investigated the effects of an asset building intervention on youth asset accumulation in Masindi, a rural area in Uganda. Two waves of data were collected on youth, between 15 and 35 years of age, for both the treatment and comparison groups. We used a Propensity Score Matching (PSM) technique and Difference-in-Difference model to estimate the effects of the asset building intervention. We find that the mean difference in financial …

There is a growing interest in whether and how to adapt psychotherapies to take into account the cultural, linguistic, and socioeconomic context of diverse ethnocultural groups. At the root of the debate is theissue of whether evidence-based treatments (EBTs) developed within a particular linguistic and cultural context are appropriate for ethnocultural groups that do not share the same language, cultural values, or both. There is considerable evidence that culture and context influence almost every aspect of the diagnostic and treatment process. Yet, there are concerns about fidelity of interventions, and some have questioned whether tinkering with well-established EBTs is warranted. …

As youth transition to adulthood, their ability to save and accumulate assets becomes very important as they begin to accept financial responsibilities and plan for the future. A New Approach To Promote Economic Independence Among At-Risk Children: Child Development Accounts (Cdas) In Korea, Yunju Nam, Chang-Keun Han

This case study investigates the adoption and implementation of Child Development Accounts (CDAs) in South Korea, using information collected from in-depth interviews and existing documents. The design of the program, an asset-building program for children in the child welfare system, reflects unique needs and conditions of the target population and promotes strong collaboration among governmental and private entities. Issue framing emerges as an important strategy for the CDA policy’s adoption. Institutional and organizational factors, such as sponsorship and well-developed collaboration among multiple partners, may explain the successful implementation of the program.

Youth—young people aged 10–24—constitute about a quarter of the world's population. Nearly three-quarters of these young people live in the developing world, and they suffer a disproportionate share of unplanned pregnancies, STIs including HIV, and other reproductive health (RH) problems. Research undertaken by FRONTIERS has shed light on numerous aspects of youth RH, including the information needs of young people, married adolescents, and parents and guardians. Findings from over 20 studies on youth RH provide important lessons about which interventions are effective, what kind of impact is possible, and what approaches have limited impact. HIV prevention programming is increasingly taking place in school settings, which provide an expansive population of young people and offer immense potential for impact on the lives of this target group. The Presidential Initiative on AIDS Strategy for Communication to Youth (PIASCY) is a school-based program that has sought to address the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Uganda in a holistic manner since 2002, targeting young people, school personnel, parents, and the wider community. Introduction and Aims. In response to increasing concerns about excessive drinking among young people the Australian alcohol industry announced that it will introduce more visible standard drink labels. This study sought to examine whether young people use this information in a way that decreases, or increases, alcohol-related harms. Design and Methods. Six focus groups with students enrolled in an undergraduate university course in a large regional city in New South Wales, recruited by direct approach on the university grounds and via an online message posted on the university bulletin board. Premarital partnerships among youth, including those that do not involve sexual relations, are widely discouraged in India. There is a widespread perception that youth do not find opportunities to mix and form romantic relationships and that premarital sex is negligible. These kinds of perceptions are often cited to argue against the provision of sex or family life education and sexual and reproductive health services to unmarried young people. Daytime sleepiness is characterized by an increased likelihood of falling asleep and adversely impacts youth’s academic performance, behavior, and mood. The National Sleep Foundation Survey (2006) found almost 50% of youth sleep 1 to 2 hours less than the recommended 9 hours per night and 60% report daytime sleepiness. The Pediatric Daytime Sleepiness Scale (PDSS; Drake et al., 2003) is a self-report questionnaire used to evaluate the likelihood of youth falling asleep in various everyday situations. The original PDSS was developed with an English-speaking American sample (Mage=11.8; SD=.6 years), and the measure was thought to assess a …

Delaying the transition to marriage and parenthood among young people has been a policy and program priority for a number of years in India. For example, several national-level policies formulated since 2000 have advocated special program attention to delay age at marriage and age at first birth. Despite these commitments, substantial proportions of girls continue to marry in adolescence. As recently as in 2005–06, more than two-fifths of women aged 20–24 were married by 18 years nationally. Likewise, over one-fifth of women aged 20–24 had given birth before age 18 and two-fifths before age 20. While the magnitude of early …

This executive summary presents, in brief, findings on the situation of youth in Bihar, part of a subnational study undertaken by the International Institute for Population Sciences, Mumbai, and the Population Council, New Delhi, as part of a project to collect information on key transitions experienced by youth in India. Transitions include those related to education, workforce participation, sexual activity, marriage, health and civic participation, the magnitude and patterns of young people’s sexual and reproductive practices before, within, and outside of marriage, as well as related knowledge, decision-making, and attitudes.
