Design Engineers And Technical Professionals At Work: Observing Information Usage In The Workplace, Suzie Allard, Kenneth Levine, Carol Tenopir
School of Information Sciences -- Faculty Publications and Other Works
This exploratory study examines how design engineers and technical professionals (hereafter referred to as engineers) in innovative high-tech firms in the United States and India use information in their daily work activities including research, development, and management. The researchers used naturalistic observation to conduct a series of daylong workplace observations with 103 engineers engaged in product design and testing in four U.S.- and two India-based firms. The explanation may …

Increasing Political Activism And Mobilization: Building An Oromo Agency And Capacity For Liberation, Asafa Jalata
Increasing Political Activism And Mobilization: Building An Oromo Agency And Capacity For Liberation, Asafa Jalata
Sociology Publications and Other Works
Without increasing our political activism, mobilizing and organizing our people, we cannot effectively challenge and defeat our external and internal enemies that are attempting to strangulate the development of Oromummaa and the progress of the Oromo national struggle. Our external enemies have been using Oromo clienteles to achieve their political and economic objectives in Oromia. Some Oromos have been used as raw materials in building other nations. Such Oromos have lacked political and national consciousness or lacked self-respect and attacked the Oromo nation for money and other interests. As the Said Bare government created and used the Somali Abo group …
Electronic Journals And Changes In Scholarly Article Seeking And Reading Patterns, Carol Tenopir, Donald W. King
Electronic Journals And Changes In Scholarly Article Seeking And Reading Patterns, Carol Tenopir, Donald W. King
School of Information Sciences -- Faculty Publications and Other Works
A recent article by James Evans in Science (Evans 2008) is being widely discussed in the science and publishing communities. Evans' in-depth research on citations in over 34 million articles and how online availability affects citing patterns, found that the more issues of a journal that are available online, the fewer numbers of articles in that journal are cited. If the journal is available for free online, it is cited even less. Evans attributes this phenomenon to more searching and less browsing (which he feels eliminates marginally relevant articles that may have been found by browsing) and the ability …

Faces Of Terrorism In The Age Of Globalization: Terrorism From Above And Below, Asafa Jalata
Faces Of Terrorism In The Age Of Globalization: Terrorism From Above And Below, Asafa Jalata
Sociology Publications and Other Works
This paper explains how the intensification of globalization as the modern world system with its ideological intensity of racism and religious extremism and its concomitant advancement in technology and organizational skills has increased the danger of all forms of terrorism. In this world system, the contestation over economic resources and power and the resistance to domination and repression or religious and ideological extremism have increased the occurrence of terrorism from above (i.e. state actors) and from below (i.e. non-state actors). We cannot adequately grasp the essence and characteristics of modern terrorism without understanding the larger cultural, social, economic, and political …

Are Electronic Journals Good For Science?, Carol Tenopir
School of Information Sciences -- Faculty Publications and Other Works
Most people accept the notion that e-journals, through library subscriptions or open access, are good for science. They save readers time in tracking down articles and help them identify relevant materials from a wide range of journal titles. However, the academic world was buzzing recently over a study that challenged this notion.

As School of Information Sciences faculty and staff prepare for our sixth accreditation by the American Library Association’s Committee on Accreditation (COA), the school has had the opportunity to reflect on a smorgasbord of changes. While this means more administrative work for faculty and staff, the accreditation process also provides a rich period for reflection while data is analyzed, reports run, and the school narrows its focus on our strengths, gaps, successes, and changes—large and small—over the past seven years since the last site visit by ALA’s COA in 2002.
