Social Sciences

Sedimentary records from California's Northern Channel Islands and the adjacent Santa Barbara Basin (SBB) indicate intense regional biomass burning (wildfire) at the Ållerød–Younger Dryas boundary (~13.0–12.9 ka) (All age ranges in this paper are expressed in thousands of calendar years before present [ka]. Radiocarbon ages will be identified and clearly marked “14C years”.). Multiproxy records in SBB Ocean Drilling Project (ODP) Site 893 indicate that these wildfires coincided with the onset of regional cooling and an abrupt vegetational shift from closed montane forest to more open habitats. Abrupt ecosystem disruption is evident on the Northern Channel Islands at …

How Personalized And Socialized Power Motivation Facilitate Antisocial And Prosocial Decision-Making, Joe C. Magee, Carrie A. Langner Dec 2008

How Personalized And Socialized Power Motivation Facilitate Antisocial And Prosocial Decision-Making, Joe C. Magee, Carrie A. Langner

Psychology and Child Development

In two studies, we investigate the effects of individuals’ power motivation on decision-making. We distinguish between two types of power motivation [McClelland, D. C. (1970). The two faces of power. Journal of International Affairs, 24, 29–47; Winter, D. G. (1973). The power motive. New York: The Free Press] and demonstrate that both types of power motivation facilitate influential decision-making but that each type plays a different role in different contexts. In a conflict context (Study 1), individuals’ personalized (self-serving) power motivation was associated with antisocial decisions, and in a healthcare context (Study 2), individuals socialized (other-serving) power motivation …

Economic Effects Of Smoking Bans On Restaurants And Pubs, Barrie Craven, Michael L. Marlow Dec 2008

Economic Effects Of Smoking Bans On Restaurants And Pubs, Barrie Craven, Michael L. Marlow

Economics

The United Kingdom has recently enacted smoking bans in public places such as restaurants and pubs. Public health advocates argue that bans are necessary because non-smokers need protection from second-hand smoke. Advocates also claim that bans do not exert harm on owners because of a vast empirical literature showing that restaurants and bars in the United States never suffer harm following bans. This paper examines whether these claims are true by developing a model within the Coasian framework whereby owners of businesses have incentives to deal with smoking disputes between smokers and non-smokers. Our model demonstrates that it is incorrect …

"Health And Wealth" And The World Wide Web: Leading Renewalist Ministries' Use Of Web To Communicate Social Order, Douglas J. Swanson

Journalism

Renewalist Christian ministries espouse a “Health andWealth” theology that is embraced by increasing numbers of believers. This study investigated leading renewalist ministries’WorldWideWeb sites to assess their application of visual, operational, and informational enhancements to communicate social order. A content analysis revealed a communication of social order that is consistent with prosperity theology. Much emphasis is placed on the appearance and personality of the ministry leader. Almost no attention is paid to traditional Christian symbolism. Web sites claimed the value of inclusiveness, but offered little visual representation of children, senior adults, the poor, and people of color. Sites communicated the importance …

Culture Or Adaptation: Milling Stone Reconsidered, Terry L. Jones

Social Sciences

Of interest to D. L. True throughout his career was the California Milling Stone Horizon, the artifact complex dominated by handstones, millingslabs, and crude core tools most frequently associated with the early Holocene in southern California. The basic Milling Stone pattern, identified in 1929 by David Banks Rogers in the Santa Barbara Channel and formally defined by Treganza (1950) and Wallace (1955), was brought to the attention of American archaeologists outside of California by Wallace (1954) and True (1958). Over the next 30 years, D. L. True authored a number of articles and reports on Milling Stone (Basgall and True …

What Explains The Increased Utilization Of Powder River Basin Coal In Electric Power Generation?, Shelby Gerking, Stephen F. Hamilton Nov 2008

What Explains The Increased Utilization Of Powder River Basin Coal In Electric Power Generation?, Shelby Gerking, Stephen F. Hamilton

Economics

This article examines possible explanations for increased utilization of Powder River Basin (PRB) coal in electric power generation that occurred over the last two decades. Did more stringent environmental policy motivate electric power plants to switch to less polluting fuels? Or, did greater use of PRB coal occur because relative price changes altered input markets in favor of this fuel. A key finding is that factors other than environmental policy such as the decline in railroad freight rates together with elastic demand by power plants were major contributors to the increased utilization of this fuel.

Dynamic Market Impacts Of Generic Dairy Advertising, Charles F. Nicholson, Harry M. Kaiser Nov 2008

Dynamic Market Impacts Of Generic Dairy Advertising, Charles F. Nicholson, Harry M. Kaiser

Agribusiness

Generic advertising of fluid milk and cheese represents the principal promotional activity undertaken with the $370 million per year provided by dairy farmers and fluid milk processors. This article describes a stock-flow-feedback simulation model that includes 17 intermediate and final dairy products, short-term and long-term milk supply response and government policies that influence the impacts of generic advertising on net revenues for dairy farmers. Permanent increases in generic advertising expenditures increase net revenues for dairy farmers, with a cumulative net benefit to cost ratio of 2.8. Permanent decreases produce a larger reduction in net revenues and indicate a net benefit …

Archaeological Perspectives On The Effects Of Medieval Drought In Prehistoric California, Terry L. Jones, Al Schwitalla Sep 2008

Archaeological Perspectives On The Effects Of Medieval Drought In Prehistoric California, Terry L. Jones, Al Schwitalla

Social Sciences

Inspired by Stine's [1994. Extreme and persistent drought in California and Patagonia during Medieval Time. Nature 369, 546–549.] findings from Mono Lake and Graumlich's [1993. A 1000-year record of temperature and precipitation in the Sierra Nevada. Quaternary Research 39, 249–255.] tree-ring study from the southern Sierra Nevada, California archaeologists have for over a decade been investigating the possibility that prehistoric societies were noticeably impacted by severe droughts during the Medieval Climatic Anomaly (MCA; cal A.D. 800–1350). Decreased production at obsidian sources, dramatic increases in bead production, trade, and sociopolitical complexity in the Channel Islands, and subsistence changes on the central …

G7 Method For Indigo Press Calibration And Proofing, Xiaoying Rong Sep 2008

G7 Method For Indigo Press Calibration And Proofing, Xiaoying Rong

Graphic Communication

G7 is a method originally developed for calibrating commercial offset press. Instead of controlling solid ink density (SID) and tone value increase (TVI), the G7 method introduces gray balance control as the key to achieve consistent color reproduction. The gray patches are quantified by CIE L*a*b* values. Inks used in conventional offset printing and Indigo printing are different in ink/toner pigments and ink setting/drying mechanism. Based on gray balance, the G7 method is believed to be valid for calibrating digital printing and other conventional printing processes. This study focused on the quality of color reproduction with the G7 method, and …

Agricultural R&D Policy: A Tragedy Of The International Commons, Jennifer S. James, Philip G. Pardey, Julian M. Alston Sep 2008

Agricultural R&D Policy: A Tragedy Of The International Commons, Jennifer S. James, Philip G. Pardey, Julian M. Alston

Agribusiness

Over the past 50 years public agricultural research has contributed enormously to humanity, enabling the supply of food to grow faster than demand in spite of a rapidly growing population, income growth, and shrinking natural resources. Nonetheless, in many countries we see waning public support for agricultural R&D, especially in Africa, a diversion of research resources from farm productivity towards other agendas, and early warning signs of a slowdown in agricultural productivity. The world has continued to collectively underinvest in agricultural R&D because of domestic and international market failures associated with appropriability problems. Governments have failed to effectively address these …

Seasonal Stability In Late Holocene Shellfish Harvesting On The Central California Coast, Terry L. Jones, Douglas J. Kennett, James P. Kennett, Brian F. Codding Aug 2008

Seasonal Stability In Late Holocene Shellfish Harvesting On The Central California Coast, Terry L. Jones, Douglas J. Kennett, James P. Kennett, Brian F. Codding

Social Sciences

Oxygen isotope determinations from 92 California mussel (Mytilus californianus) shells from ten archaeological sites in central coastal California show relatively stable seasonal harvesting patterns between 3600 CAL BP and historic contact (AD 1769). Coastal occupants harvested mussels nearly year-round and seem to have occupied individual residential bases throughout the seasonal cycle. Interior groups returned with mussels from the coast mostly in the spring and early summer, but almost never in the late summer/early fall when nut crops were harvested. These findings suggest two inter-dependent groups with distinct seasonal settlement strategies: inland people, reliant on acorns and other nut …

Applying Experimental Economics To Obesity In The Family Household, Mariah D. Ehmke, Travis Warziniack, Christiane Schroeter, Kari Morgan Aug 2008

Applying Experimental Economics To Obesity In The Family Household, Mariah D. Ehmke, Travis Warziniack, Christiane Schroeter, Kari Morgan

Agribusiness

The objective of this study is to identify experimental economic tools that can be employed to explain the role of economic behavior in overweight and obesity in the household. We identify three economic experiments that can be used to understand how parent-child economic relationships relate to obesity. Loss aversion experiments are discussed as a tool to understand challenges some individuals face in achieving a healthy diet. Finally, testbed experiments are introduced as a means to test and understand new policies and incentives for better health at the household level.

Economic Factors And Body Weight: An Empirical Analysis, Christiane Schroeter, Jayson L. Lusk Aug 2008

Economic Factors And Body Weight: An Empirical Analysis, Christiane Schroeter, Jayson L. Lusk

Agribusiness

With this study, we investigate the effects of changes in economic factors on body weight by constructing a utility theoretic model. The model is empirically estimated by combining data on individuals’ body weight, demographic and physical activity information, and state level measures pertaining to the prices of food away from home, food at home, and wages. By combining these data sources, we aim to estimate directly the weight effects of price and income changes. The empirical analysis suggests that decreasing the price of food at home could decrease body weight, a finding which has important public policy implications.

Engaging Today's Net Generation Of Students With New Technologies: A Study Of Student Use And Perceptions Of New Online Course Delivery Methods, Michael A. Kanters, P. Brian Greenwood

Recreation, Parks and Tourism Administration

Technology is evolving at a rapid pace and the traditional modes of course delivery in higher education are increasingly being examined and supplemented or replaced by online or e-learning strategies, platforms, and methods. Research has indicated that today’s multi-tasking college student desires flexibility both in scheduling and the delivery of course material. Based on these suppositions, online courses with enhanced technological components would be ideal for the “net” generation of students. The researchers augmented an existing online course for upper-level undergraduates with ipod Touches and a Facebook group page. The purpose of the study was to examine student use of …

A Behavioral Intervention Tool For Recreation Managers, Shawn Meghan Burn, Patricia L. Winter Jul 2008

A Behavioral Intervention Tool For Recreation Managers, Shawn Meghan Burn, Patricia L. Winter

Psychology and Child Development

Depreciative behaviors and other undesirable recreationist actions continue to be a topic of great interest for recreation management (fig. 1, above). Maintaining park ecosystems involves responding to and preventing damage from depreciative recreationist behavior, and recreation managers are charged with developing and selecting effective tools to address the costly and perplexing impacts of undesirable recreationist behavior.

This article describes the Environmental Intervention Handbook for Resource Managers (EIH), a tool we designed to help managers modify depreciative recreationist behavior. The handbook is based on a model of pro-environmental behavior change derived from social science research. It provides “treatments” of depreciative behavior …
