How Neoliberalism Weakened Democracy In Chile, Brandon Greene Jan 2017

How Neoliberalism Weakened Democracy In Chile, Brandon Greene

Undergraduate Craft of Research Prize Papers

During the late twentieth century, neoliberal policy transformations were occurring in countries all over the world. In Chile, this radical change in policy removed the state from many economic spheres, which ended up hurting the Chilean people. The newly enacted neoliberal policies left the Chilean citizens in an even worse position than they had been in originally, and this suffering eroded any possibility they had of democratically participating in their government. Since the state was removing regulations with the aim of stimulating economic growth, workers were no longer promised a livable wage and they lost their opportunities to live in …

The Role Of Islamist Political Parties In Tunisia And Egypt In The Wake Of The Arab Spring, Sean Sweeney

Related Scholarship: Symposium on Peacebuilding and Justice

The Arab Spring, with a call for a more democratic system of governance, was a phenomenon that will continue to shape the political and social spheres of the Arab world for generations to come. This paper focuses on answering the question of to what extent Islamist political parties, having recently won majorities within the preliminary governments in the two countries, will use an ever-changing Islam religion within the formation of their fledgling governments and constitutions.

The Rise Of Religious Parties In Turkey And India, Hannah Donovan Apr 2013

The Rise Of Religious Parties In Turkey And India, Hannah Donovan

Annual Celebration of Student Scholarship and Creativity

This project examines the rise of religious parties in secular democracies. In both Turkey and India, religious parties have enjoyed electoral successes (and failures). While religion is a significant issue to voters, it is oftentimes the persistence of economic problems that leads to the rise and fall of religious parties. The impact of coalition governments, change in political rhetoric, and relationship between government and religion in both countries are also analyzed and contrasted.

A Study Of The Relationship Between The Principles Of Distributive Justice And Political Ideology, Maryalice Multari Apr 2009

A Study Of The Relationship Between The Principles Of Distributive Justice And Political Ideology, Maryalice Multari

Social Work Theses

Ideology plays a very important role in everyday life, particularly in a President’s term of office. Under the Presidency of George W. Bush, welfare and other Social Services were severely cut due to the fact that he believed in more conservative viewpoints (higher military spending, higher tax cuts for the wealthy, etc.). However, ideologies are not only seen on a grand scale: everyone makes day-to-day decisions based on his/her own beliefs. This study hypothesized that males within the Providence College student body would believe in more conservative ideologies, whereas females would believe in more liberal ones. Statements based on both …

When Church Teachings And Policy Commitments Collide: Perspectives On Catholics In The U.S. House Of Representatives, William E. Hudson, Elizabeth A. Oldmixon

Political Science Faculty Publications

This article investigates the influence of religious values on domestic social policy-making, with a particular focus on Catholics. We analyze roll call votes in the 109th Congress and find that Catholic identification is associated with support for Catholic Social Teaching, but both younger Catholics and Republican Catholics are found less supportive. In followup interviews with a small sample of Catholic Republicans, we find that they justify voting contrary to Church teaching by seeing its application to domestic social issues as less authoritative than Church moral teachings on issues like abortion.
