Creating Digital Knowledge: Library As Open Access Digital Publisher, D. Russell Bailey
Creating Digital Knowledge: Library As Open Access Digital Publisher, D. Russell Bailey
Library Faculty and Staff papers
Since the mid-1990s, many higher education libraries have evolved from the traditional roles of primarily (1) research resource purchasers and providers and (2) research service providers into new, enhanced, and complementary digital age roles related to digital open access knowledge creation and digital publishing, creating digital resources for open education. This article presents a brief description of open access digital knowledge creation, the library publishing landscape (particularly in Digital Humanities/DH), as well as several model higher education library approaches and example initiatives in these areas. These models and initiatives are presented as broadly adaptable and scalable to many higher education …

A Novel Application: Using Mobile Technology To Connect Physical And Virtual Reference Collections, Hailie D. Posey
Library Faculty and Staff papers
This chapter describes an innovative implementation of the use of iPad kiosks to blur the lines between physical and virtual library collections. Providence College’s Phillips Memorial Library + Commons began lending iPads to students, faculty, and staff in 2012. In addition to lending the devices, library staff dedicated time to learning about both task-based and subject-based mobile applications that would be of use to our community. A small group of library staff tested, discussed, and vetted a variety of apps that would be deployed on the iPads to be lent out. Efforts were made to promote the use and discovery …

Creating Digital Art History: Library, Student, And Faculty Collaboration, D. Russell Bailey
Creating Digital Art History: Library, Student, And Faculty Collaboration, D. Russell Bailey
Library Faculty and Staff papers
Over the last two decades, teaching, learning, and research in higher education have developed a growing digital presence. Digital development in the humanities has been slow relative to most other areas in academia, and with some exceptions, art and art history have enjoyed slow digital growth within the humanities. Within this environment, the article here presents one collaborative model for digital art history, rare in its exclusive focus on undergraduate “junior scholars”. Undergraduate senior-level art history and studio art students at Providence College collaborate annually with art history and studio art faculty to publish their senior theses in print format …

While the Digital Public Library of America/DPLA is neither magical, unique nor technologically advanced, when compared with many other current digital knowledge initiatives or other private and governmental enterprises (scientific, research, manufacturing and communication), still the DPLA’s promises for the future boldly evidence all of these robust “magical” powers and energies and even more. The development of an open access world digital library is the grand promise in this grand strategic goal of the DPLA and its global partners.

The 2020+ Project: Using Wordpress To Organize, Evaluate, & Discuss The College Of The Future, Julie A. Decesare, Hailie D. Posey, Julia R. Tryon
Library Faculty and Staff papers
The provost of Providence College asked the Library+Commons to compile scholarly materials on the future of higher education in order for the Academic Affairs Committee to prepare for the college of 2020. The committee needed an easily accessible, annotated "bibliography" that would allow for commenting and more. The research and education librarians focused on topics like teaching and learning, accountability, and student and faculty characteristics. The research end was challenging, and the librarians continue to explore avenues to find appropriate resources online. They experimented with many platforms before choosing WordPress as the best open-source vehicle to organize and present the …

The Evolving Commons Concept: Information, Learning, Teaching, Research [International Conference On Information & Learning Commons, Dec. 10-11, 2007], D. Russell Bailey
Library Commons
The Commons concept, developed in the early 1990’s, has evolved over time, taking different shapes and involving different resources and services as it has evolved, including the Information Commons, the Learning Commons, the Library Commons and the Research Commons. There are numerous similarities among the various iterations of the Commons and some clear differences.
This presentation describes the basic foci and components of the Commons, found in most all iterations.
The presentation then delineates and describes the variations among the different types of Commons as they move from library-centric and tactical initiatives to institution-wide and strategic.

Two Rooms And A Concept [Nercomp, June 5, 2007], Elizabeth Tilley
Library Commons
Providing a collaborative learning space with appropriate services and resources for our undergraduate clientele, but with just two physical rooms, a limited budget and the commons concept to guide our decisions, was challenging. The context and mission of the Library within the University were important considerations and the theoretical and practical drivers for change as they relate to our goals and aims will be examined. Creativity in the use of space and clear, focused project management were also key factors in creating a successful Commons environment. The results of the changes made, and an assessment and evaluation of the project …
