Dimitrios V. Siskos

The structure of accounting education in Greece, and in the world, is facing nowadays many significant challenges since the global financial crisis has left behind many critical educational burdens. At the same time, there is an increase in accounting omissions and malpractices of ethics both in the public and in the private sector of Greece. These undoubtedly contributed to massive unemployment, high poverty rate, crime and other social ills experienced in the country. This motivated the study on restructuring accounting education by devising a new educational framework that can be applied to Greek universities and colleges with the purpose of …

Political Trust In Extremis, Antonis A. Ellinas, Iasonas Lamprianou

The literature points out that political trust can have a major impact on democratic politics by affecting political participation, institutional effectiveness and policy choices. Given the significance of political trust for the functioning of democracy, it is important know how the way citizens relate with political actors and institutions changes in times of extraordinary shock. Using Greece as a case and data from successive rounds of the European Social Survey, this article shows that, during times of major distress, the way schools and hospitals are run – the “social” performance of government – has an important effect on political trust. …

Why Over-Financialization In The Eurozone Periphery Was Inevitable: A Crisis Of Flawed Legislation And Competitive Imbalances, Maximilian Bevan

Over the past three years, the heads of state in the Euro area have argued over the proper monetary mechanisms to alleviate the protracted European debt crisis. This paper illuminates the often-overlooked aspects of this crisis – the fundamental failures of the monetary union from its inception. It expands the scope of analysis on the Eurozone crisis by addressing the over-financialization in the Eurozone periphery (Greece, Portugal, and Spain) within a political-economy framework. It explicates the direct relationship between the political manipulations of the legislation by Germany (analyzed from a public choice perspective) and the resulting economic consequences that the …

Imfing With Your Economic Rights: The Greek Tragedy Of The Eurozone, James C. Brady Dec 2012

Imfing With Your Economic Rights: The Greek Tragedy Of The Eurozone, James C. Brady

James C Brady

While international human rights law promulgates that economic, social and cultural rights (economic rights) be supported just as fervently as civil and political rights, the reality is, they are not. The Greek debt crisis and resulting austerity measures demonstrate how a growing world economy is having an increasingly large impact on economic rights. States treat economic rights obligations similar to how businesses treat risk – that is, states seek to reduce their obligations like businesses seek to reduce their risk. As a result, economic rights remain second fiddle to their civil/political counterpart and a victim of supranational monetary monoliths like …

Neoliberalizing Higher Education In Greece: New Laws, Old Free-Market Tricks, Panayota Gounari

Amid a financial crisis that has shifted politics in Greece to conservative market-driven ideologies and policies, specific major changes are proposed by the Greek Ministry of Education for primary, secondary and higher education. With the gradual disappearance of public space and of the welfare state, under the pressure and the auspices of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), education becomes one more space quickly geared up towards privatization, marketization of learning and educational goals while the character of free public education is radically redefined. This article addresses the changes in higher education legislation and policy in Greece and analyzes the discursive …
