From The Suburbs To The House: The Metropolitan–Rural Population And The Success Of Women Candidates, Elizabeth Stiles, Larry Schwab

Elizabeth A. Stiles

We analyze the voting behavior of metropolitan and rural residents in relation to women’s legislative representation. Examining election data on the U.S. House and all lower state houses, we find that the greater the metropolitan population in a legislative district, the more likely it is to be represented by a woman. We extrapolate from these findings that the modern increase in women’s representation can be attributed in part to the rural-to-suburban shift in population and legislative seats.

A Picture Is Worth A Thousand Words: Building National Identity Through Art, Donna R. Hoffman, Alison D. Howard

Alison Dana Howard

The abstract principles of a republican form of government would be tested with the ratification of the Constitution. It would be challenging to not only establish a government that was unlike any other in the world, but to also construct for the public a shared identity and national narrative that would encompass the values and ideals of the newly formed Republic. Art is one form of communication that has the capacity to reflect social contexts. Edelman (1995, 6) believed art to be an “essential and fundamental element” in political ideas and action. We examine how the portraits, historical paintings, and …

The George W. Bush Legacy, Caroline Heldman

Book review of The George W. Bush Legacy. Bush will be known for his ideological polarization of the political parties, his expansion of presidential power, and his appointment of a more conservative federal judiciary. The 2006 election was a major turning point for the White House in terms of public opinion and the loss of a Republican majority in Congress, and only time will tell whether the last two years will shift the direction of the Bush legacy.

Entrepreneurs, Organizational Strength And The Pursuit Of Public Goods By Voluntary Organizations, Elizabeth Stiles Mar 2008

Entrepreneurs, Organizational Strength And The Pursuit Of Public Goods By Voluntary Organizations, Elizabeth Stiles

Elizabeth A. Stiles

Robert Salisbury has assumed that interest group entrepreneurs are profit-driven and make attempts to procure collective goods to increase their membership and revenue. This article's research question takes the reverse of Salisbury's claim: can interest group entrepreneurs increase the likelihood of procuring collective goods by increasing their organizational strength? Results of a study of statewide Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) organizations show that larger memberships are positively and significantly associated with success in procuring collective goals while increased budgets are significantly but negatively associated. The implications are twofold. First, the assumption that entrepreneurs pursue collective goods for reasons of …

Legislative/Judicial Interaction: Do Court Ideologies Constrain Legislative Action?, Elizabeth Stiles, Lauren Bowen

Elizabeth A. Stiles

The article presents a study which examines whether the anticipated actions of the courts to interpret, expand, or retract legislative meaning discourages or prevents policy making by legislatures. It suggests that state legislatures are significantly less likely to pass legislation when state supreme courts are ideological. It concludes that there is evidence that judiciaries exercise preemptive suppressive powers upon legislation.

"She Brought Only A Skirt": Print Media Coverage Of Elizabeth Dole's Bid For The Republican Presidential Nomination, Caroline Heldman, Susan Carroll, Stephanie Olson Jun 2005

"She Brought Only A Skirt": Print Media Coverage Of Elizabeth Dole's Bid For The Republican Presidential Nomination, Caroline Heldman, Susan Carroll, Stephanie Olson

Caroline Heldman

This article analyzes two data sets to determine differences in print media coverage of Elizabeth Dole and five other Republican contenders for the presidential nomination in 1999: George W. Bush, John McCain, Alan Keyes, Gary Bauer, and Steve Forbes. Our findings indicate that Dole received a differential amount and type of print media coverage that was decidedly gendered and may have hindered her candidacy. Dole did not receive an amount of media coverage consistent with her standing as the number two candidate in the polls throughout the time period we examined, and the press paid more attention to Dole's personality …

Micro And Macro Level Explanations Of The Presidential Expectations Gap, Hank C. Jenkins-Smith, Carol L. Silva, Richard Waterman Dec 2004

Micro And Macro Level Explanations Of The Presidential Expectations Gap, Hank C. Jenkins-Smith, Carol L. Silva, Richard Waterman

Hank C Jenkins-Smith

The idea that the public expects more from its presidents than they are able to deliver long has been a mainstay of the presidential literature. When presidential scholars ask whether the expectations gap exists, they generally provide microlevel explanations that focus on the relationships among various presidential characteristics and how these characteristics are perceived by the public. This approach makes sense if expectations are chiefly responsive to perceptions of the Presidency itself. Yet, recent research empirically identifies an expectations gap in public perceptions of Congress and the president. These studies provide a theoretical reason to believe that macrolevel political phenomena, …

The Effects Of Negative Political Advertisements: A Meta-Analytic Assessment, Richard Lau, Lee Sigelman, Caroline Heldman, Paul Babbitt Nov 1999

The Effects Of Negative Political Advertisements: A Meta-Analytic Assessment, Richard Lau, Lee Sigelman, Caroline Heldman, Paul Babbitt

Caroline Heldman

The conventional wisdom about negative political advertisements holds that no one likes them, but they work, that is, they have the consequences their sponsors intend. Moreover, many analysts have expressed concern over the detrimental effects of such negativism on the American political system. We examine the accuracy of the conventional wisdom and the legitimacy of the fears about the consequences for the political system via meta-analysis, a systematic, quantitative review of the literature. The data do not support either contention. Negative political ads appear to be no more effective than positive ads and do not seem to have especially detrimental …
