Effective collaboration between archives and technical services can increase the discoverability of special collection materials. Archivists at the University of Dayton Libraries began using Archive-It to capture websites relevant to their collecting policies in 2015. However, the collections were only made available to users from the University of Dayton page on the Archive-It website. Content was isolated in a separate platform and was not promoted to users. Working together, the team of archivists and technical services librarians incorporated the web archive collections into the Libraries’ EBSCO Discovery Service (EDS) discovery layer. University of North Florida (UNF) Special Collections does not have clear guidelines for collecting ‘rare’ books and maintaining them in our climate-controlled storage. Overcrowding is also a problem in Special Collections’ storage space. Both issues have led to a reassessment project of the noncirculating ‘rare’ books collected over the past 35 to 40 years. In the summer of 2018 UNF’s Resource Description Librarian surveyed the books under the direction of the Head of Special Collections and University Archives. In 2018 the UVU Fulton Library partnered with Institutional Research to run a Library Research Focus Group. They had 15 participants in two sessions. Students gave feedback on what was stressful about research, where they looked for help, and what barriers they experienced asking for help in the library. Using detailed qualitative data the Fulton Library addressed student concerns in instruction, wayfinding, and marketing reference services differently to tackle students’ needs.

The college campus is a complex ecosystem of services and resources. Academic library outreach efforts offered in partnership with Student Affairs units can support the whole student as they navigate this ecosystem. This presentation offers one librarian's experience collaborating with Student Affairs units such as health, counseling, and recreation centers. A mental model for this work that draws on the metaphor of organic gardening helps frame the remarks and reflections.

Finals Week is an extremely stressful time for students and library staff. While a busy university library may seem like the last place for some R&R, outreach librarians can implement fun, engaging, and cost-effective events to foster academic success and mental wellbeing. Popular programs include service dogs in the library, free late-night coffee, a sleep zone, and pop-up Random Acts of Snacks. During this poster session, attendees will learn how to plan similar events and activities, assess ways to collaborate with other departments to increase reach and reduce costs, and define how to create goodwill while promoting student success.

In May 2017, The Economist ran a cover story titled “The world’s most valuable resource is no longer oil, but data.” Given the continued growth in the sourcing, curating, and storing of data for academic research, it seems the academy would agree. In response to this growing need at Seton Hall, a midsized research university, the Seton Hall University (SHU) Libraries conducted an assessment of the current and emerging data requirements of the researchers and students on campus.

Librarians and disciplinary faculty showcase four collaborative projects that have provided students with a high-impact learning experiences in information literacy. These projects cover a range of methods, including a service-learning program that allows education students a chance to teach information literacy skills to a cohort of public school students, a summer scholars research program, the creation of an open education resource by a writing class, and a class built around designing materials to teach college students information literacy terminology. These projects achieve many of the practices identified by the Association of American Colleges and University as high-impact learning practices.

During times of tight resources, cultivating the emotional intelligence (EI) of employees at all levels, in all areas of the library, can be a way to maintain service quality, reduce stress, and cope with change. Emotional intelligence includes characteristics such as self-awareness, adaptability, empathy, ability to work collaboratively, and communication skills. PurposeThis paper aims to evaluate the performance of a chat reference service implemented at an academic library in a private liberal arts college by gauging its impact on other forms of reference service in terms of usage volume, with a focus on research-related face-to-face reference questions. Design/methodology/approach Two statistical methods are used, namely, the difference-in-differences method and a simple moving average time series analysis, to analyze both the short-term and long-term impact brought by chat reference. Findings This study finds that the usage volume of the traditional face-to-face reference is significantly affected by chat reference in its first service year. …

The rising popularity of augmented reality (AR) was punctuated by the Pokémon Go craze of 2016. Individuals of all ages were glued to their phones, attempting to catch creatures that displayed on their phone but were not physically in front of them. There are free and low-cost applications that libraries can use to harness the magic and create their own AR content to enhance library usability and marketing. This column explores the history of AR, explains how it works, and provides some examples of how librarians can use it to market their services and provide additional assistance to library users.

This paper investigates communication in academic libraries that experienced rapid changes during the Great Recession and its aftermath. The investigator conducted a multi-case study, in which she interviewed library and university participants in three U.S. academic libraries in 2010. Results show that effective communication existed for the most part in the three libraries, all of which were maintaining strategic priorities while experiencing dramatic changes.
