In this study a series of isatin-based, pH-sensitive aryl imine derivatives with differing aromatic substituents and substitution patterns were synthesised and their acid-catalysed hydrolysis evaluated. These derivatives were functionalised at the C3 carbonyl group of a potent N-substituted isatin cytotoxin and were stable at physiological pH but readily cleaved at pH 4.5. Observed rates of hydrolysis for the embedded imine-acid moiety were in the order para-phenylpropionic acid>phenylacetic acid (para>meta)>benzoic acid (meta>para). The ability to fine-tune hydrolysis rates in this way has potential implications for optimising imine linked, tumour targeting cytotoxin-protein conjugates

Evaluating Emergency Management After An Event: Gaps And Suggestions, Neil Dufty

Post-event evaluations of emergency management are critical to help emergency service providers and communities learn to build disaster resilience. This paper identifies five main types of formal post-event evaluations of emergency management that are used in Australia. It argues that these evaluations should be more consistent in their conduct and approach, more comprehensive in scope, and better timed. The paper also suggests that post-event evaluation reports should be released particularly to the affected communities.

Background An important consideration in health service delivery is ensuring that services meet consumer needs and that consumers are satisfied with service delivery. Patient satisfaction can impact on compliance with suggested treatments and therefore impact on health outcomes. Comparatively few studies have explored consumer satisfaction with nurses in general practice. Methods A sub-group of 18 consumers from a larger quantitative evaluation of consumer satisfaction with New Zealand general practice nurses participated in semi-structured telephone interviews. Interview data was analysed using thematic analysis. Results Four major themes emerged from the data. These themes highlighted that, despite confusion experienced by some consumers …

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to establish a transparent, integrated approach to leadership competency development and succession management to respond to drivers associated with an ageing workforce, leadership drain and the enticement of people into leadership roles. Design/methodology/approach – A consultant was engaged to facilitate a review of the UOW Library’s leadership situation. Key to this process and subsequent activities was the use of the Lominger Leadership competencies; measurable characteristics related to success in the workplace to establish the desired leadership profile. Alcohol consumption in older people presents unique challenges due to changes in body composition, co-morbid conditions and associated mediations, as well as a reduction in metabolic capacity. As such, this generation has been identified as an at-risk group by the NHRMC (NHRMC, 2011). For the purpose of this paper "older" adults are individuals aged 65 years and over. The NHMRC produced guidelines for minimising the risks associated with alcohol consumption in 2001 (NHMRC, 2001). omputer-assisted telephone interviewing and random digit dialling are increasingly being used to conduct household surveys in Australia. However, there is little published information concerning Australian experience with such surveys. In 1995 the Government Statistician's Office in Queensland conducted a household survey to study population migration using these techniques. The survey involved a sample of 110 000 telephone numbers resulting in 38 000 responding households. This article describes a computerized survey management system that was developed and which provided information concerning important operational and quality aspects of the survey.

This paper presents a series of new single-grain optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) ages for the Still Bay at Blombos Cave, South Africa, and compares them to previously published OSL, thermoluminescence (TL) and electron-spin resonance (ESR) ages for this site. Details are provided about the measurement and analytical procedures, including a discussion of the characteristics of the OSL signals of individual quartz grains. centres on the LOVEBiTES program run among
Year 10 students and a newly developed Respectful

The evaluation was conducted among students who
participated in these programs in a Sydney school

The purpose of this investigation was to evaluate the effectiveness of a mental skills training (MST) program for male youth elite rugby athletes. Three focus groups were held with 21 under-16 male rugby athletes and four male coaches involved in the MST program to examine the quality of service delivery, athlete responses to the MST program, the mental qualities used by athletes, and its perceived influence on athlete performance. Following inductive-deductive content analysis, 40 subcategories and 16 categories emerged. Goal-free evaluation (GFE) is an evaluation model where the evaluator is deliberately kept from the stated (or implied) goals and objectives of the program; this is accomplished by appointing a screener to keep goal-related information from the goal-free evaluator. Screening the evaluator from program goals is designed to control bias inherent in goal-based evaluation (GBE), a bias that contaminates the evaluator’s ability to see the program’s true outcomes and true merit. Historically, foundation-supported program evaluations focused on goal attainment. Goal-free evaluation (GFE) is a model in which the goals and objectives are screened from the evaluator. Several obstacles must be overcome in persuading foundations and programs to consider GFE as a viable option, because both tend to view goal attainment as intuitively and inextricably linked to evaluation. These beliefs are contrary to the fact that successful goal-free product evaluations have been done for more than 75 years. This article presents the case for GFE as a perspective that belongs in the foundation’s toolbox. The authors demonstrate GFE’s use, highlight aspects of …
