This report summarizes the findings of an in-depth study of the manufacturing sector in the Greater Northeastern/Northern region of Pennsylvania. The objective of the first section is to draw attention to the role manufacturing plays in the regional economy. It compares manufacturing to other sectors of the economy in terms of employment, gross regional product, wages, productivity, and number of establishments (See Table E-1). It also briefly describes trends in the value of shipments of manufacturing goods as a proxy for exports, manufacturers’ investments in capital expenditures as a measure of capital intensity and adoption of technology, and patenting activity …

The Living Cities Integration Initiative (TII) began in 2011 as a three-year program to accelerate local initiatives promoting greater economic inclusion in five cities across the country. In Cleveland, Ohio, the TII was known as the Greater University Circle (GUC) Community Wealth Building Initiative and was part of the more comprehensive Greater University Circle Initiative (GUCI) between 2011 and 2013. The GUCI began in 2005 and will continue beyond TII. This report will refer to the three-year Living Cities program as the GUCI/TII. This brief continues a series of publications that tell the story of manufacturing in Northeast Ohio (NEO) and provide an overview of the trends in employment, gross regional product, average wages, establishments, and exports for major manufacturing industries. This year’s focus will be on short term trends (2010 to 2012) that describe the growth of the manufacturing sector, with a detailed analysis for specific industries that constitute the sector. Northeast Ohio’s trends are then compared to trends in the United States and the remainder of the state of Ohio.

This report assesses the economic impact of Cleveland State University on the five-county Cleveland metropolitan area. The study was conducted by the Center for Economic Development at Cleveland State University’s Maxine Goodman Levin College of Urban Affairs. The economic impact of the university operations is based on FY2013 data (July 1, 2012-June 30, 2013), which was the most recent completed fiscal year for which data was available at the start of this study. The economic impacts of the capital expenditures are based on FY2009-2013 spending.

This study describes the impact of GRC on the State of Ohio and on Northeast Ohio, where GRC is located. Northeast Ohio includes the eight counties in the Akron and Cleveland metropolitan areas.1 This report is an expansion and update of an earlier study, published in February 1996.2 As before, this study employs two methods to determine GRC’s influence on the state and local economies. While economic development programs are difficult to evaluate, the literature reveals important information about the level of success achieved by various programs. The Ohio New Establishments Dynamics data (O-NED) is a new data set, developed by the College and Center. O-NED tracks employment and number of establishments for establishments that first started employing people between the 2nd quarter of 1997 and the 1st quarter of 2008. This report describes the findings from the third study of Dashboard indicators using the framework that was developed in the previous two studies. The framework resulted in a set of indicators that explains the dynamics of regional economic growth for large and mid-sized metropolitan areas in the United States.
