Much of the research that brings the concept of enregisterment into conversation with sociolinguistic variation has to do with how sets of linguistic forms come to be heard as dialects or regional accents: registers linked with places (Beal, 2010; Eberhardt, 2012; Johnstone & Baumgardt, 2004; Johnstone, 2009; Remlinger, 2010).
