Each year more than 1,000 refugees from nations all over the world are resettled in Boise and Twin Falls. This presentation looks at who these refugees are, how they came to Idaho, and the challenges they face in their new life. Through increased awareness of these new community members, we might better position ourselves and our libraries to assist them with their transitions to life as American citizens.

This volume documents the capstone event to the seven-year Cataloging Hidden Special Collections and Archives program, funded by The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. The two-day symposium and unconference brought together more than 180 participants, including many past and current grant recipients. In the proceedings, more than 20 symposium presenters examine inter-institutional collaboration, student and faculty involvement, cataloging, arrangement and description, audiovisual collections, science collections, and outreach.

Albertsons Library at Boise State University has found slide shows to be an essential and easy to manage component in its outreach efforts and branding strategy. The slide shows run continually on a TV monitor in the library lobby as well as on all the computers in the library labs. This presentation focuses on the strategies used in the selection of topics, images and text, presenting examples of some of the most popular slides used at Albertsons Libraries categorized under recommended best practices.

As libraries struggle to recruit and retain staff members from underrepresented ethnic and cultural groups, alternative strategies must be advanced to more competently assess and meet the needs of the increasingly diverse American population in all aspects of librarianship. Training in cross cultural competency for all library staff may help libraries become more adept at serving their multiethnic patrons. Albertsons Library has successfully leveraged the use mobile devices for helping students learn research skills. Librarians are now going to classrooms and teaching two instruction sessions — 1) finding information and 2) evaluating information. The library sessions provide hands-on, active learning opportunities for student teams, built around the use of iPads to explore library resources. In fall 2012, this included instruction to seventy-four classes in Boise State's "University Foundations 100" course, the first course in our general education program. This article shares information from a presentation at the 2011 Southwest Idaho Library Association Regional Conference, which explored increased access to university collections and scholarship and the great benefits this provides for all library communities. Access to university records and scholarship, both born digital and originally in paper, is improved by providing them in an open, electronic format. The session featured examples of institutional repositories and the types of digital content they include, and provided resources with information on creating and implementing an institutional repository.

SCVNGR is a game-based geolocation application where users can earn points or gain rewards by completing challenges and treks. Builders design questions that involve text based answers (open ended or multiple choice), QR codes, or photo challenges. Librarians at Boise State University and Oregon State University have built treks and challenges using SCVNGR for library orientations and instruction. They have found SCVNGR a better environment than Foursquare for these purposes. With SCVNGR, students can participate in the challenges and treks using not only their smart phones and mobile devices, but also via text-messaging and laptops. How can staff stay on top of the latest library trends, and empower individuals to think “lean and mean” when times demand creativity? Digital collections exist at all types of institutions throughout the Northwest. Wrangling these online resources all into one place is quite a challenge. This poster will raise awareness of and highlight digital collections both big and small throughout the region. The range of collections spans from historical documents detailing local histories to the digital repositories of official government business to photographs and objects documenting Northwest culture (music, art, environment).
