Observatory Of Trends In Software Related Microblogs, Achananuparp Palakorn, Nelman Lubis Ibrahim, Yuan Tian, David Lo, Ee Peng Lim

Microblogging has recently become a popular means to disseminate information among millions of people. Interestingly, software developers also use microblog to communicate with one another. Different from traditional media, microblog users tend to focus on recency and informality of content. Many tweet contents are relatively more personal and Opinionated, compared to that of traditional news report. Thus, by analyzing microblogs, one could get the up-to-date information about what people are interested in or feel toward a particular topic. In this paper, we describe our microblog observatory that aggregates more than 70,000 Twitter feeds, captures software-related tweets, and computes trends from …

Millions of people, including those in the software engineering communities have turned to microblogging services, such as Twitter, as a means to quickly disseminate information. A number of past studies by Treude et al., Storey, and Yuan et al. have shown that a wealth of interesting information is stored in these microblogs. However, microblogs also contain a large amount of noisy content that are less relevant to software developers in engineering software systems. In this work, we perform a preliminary study to investigate the feasibility of automatic classification of microblogs into two categories: relevant and irrelevant to engineering software systems. …

Suppression Orders: Reskilling Journalists And The Judiciary, Mark Pearson, Caroline Graham Nov 2012

Suppression Orders: Reskilling Journalists And The Judiciary, Mark Pearson, Caroline Graham

Caroline Graham

Journalists, media organisations and industry bodies have long complained about the number of suppression orders issued in Australia each year and the inconsistency of approaches across the nation's nine jurisdictions. State and federal governments have recently taken steps towards developing a national notification system for supression orders, which would at least improve communication to media organisations about the order. Yet important problems still remain for journalists trying to cover court cases, including the widely varied approaches of judicial officers, financial constraints on media organisations which have previously appealed such orders and the inexperience of journalists with the process of objecting …

The New, Old Journalism: Narrative Writing In Contemporary Newspapers, Jane Johnston, Caroline Graham

Caroline Graham

While there is a significant literature on the rise of narrative journalism in daily newspapers, mostly from the United States, few studies have investigated the breakdown of newswriting styles in the front end of the newspaper, with a specific focus on the use of narrative techniques. This study investigates the writing styles of two daily metropolitan print newspapers in order to provide some concrete data on narrative news reporting in Australia. In a sense, it responds to Mark Kramer's comment in 2000 that “no one has added up the reallocated column inches to quantify this change.” The research analyses 5000 …

Multimedia Journalism As A Research Method - A New Approach, Mark Pearson, Roger Patching Sep 2012

Multimedia Journalism As A Research Method - A New Approach, Mark Pearson, Roger Patching

Roger Patching

Journalism has long been considered the subject of academic research rather than a research method in its own right (Hartely, 1995, p.27). Scholars have considered the use of both qualitative and quantitative academic methods in mainstream journalistic practice. Others have argued that major works of journalism should be accepted by the university and research sectors as the equivalent of academic research (Bacon, 2009). But only recently have some posited the notion that the journalistic combination of deadline-centred, source-based, document-sifting, interview-oriented, multi-tasking research could constitute a distinctive research method of value to academic researcher; particularly those focused on journalism theory and …

Uprising: The Internet's Unintended Consequences, Marcus Breen Sep 2012

Uprising: The Internet's Unintended Consequences, Marcus Breen

Marcus Breen

The Internet has transformed the social relations that were once managed by the powers that be. As a rapidly maturing communications technology, the Internet has brought people together even while it has reinforced privatism. The desktop computer, the laptop, the cellular and mobile phone, the Global Positoning System, the pilotless drone aircraft, video games and government documents courtesy of Wikileaks, all are connected on the network of networks. Together these converged elements of a global socio-technical system offer wonderful possibilities for human emancipation, even while those ideas collide with established ideas of civility and decency. Utilizing a transdisciplinary approach, Uprising …

Creativity is a highly sought after skill. To inspire people’s creativity, prescriptive advice in the form of metaphors abound: We are encouraged to think outside the box, to consider the problem on one hand, then on the other hand, and to put two and two together to achieve creative breakthroughs. These metaphors suggest a connection between concrete bodily experiences and creative cognition. Inspired by recent advances on body-mind linkages under the emerging vernacular of embodied cognition, we explored for the first time whether enacting metaphors for creativity enhances creative problem-solving. In five studies, findings revealed that both physically and psychologically …

Work In Progress - Synthesizing Design, Engineering, And Entrepreneurship Through A Mobile Application Development Course, Mark L. Chang

Mark L. Chang

In this paper, we describe our experiences in designing and delivering a course that blends together design, engineering, and entrepreneurship through the use of mobile devices. The significance of this work is in advocating for and demonstrating the motivational and educational benefits of using a mobile platform, and describing how to utilize the mobile marketplace to provide an authentic, real-world experience across these three domains.

Aftershocks: Sense And Nonsense Making In A Disorganized Narrative, Donna Henson Jul 2012

Aftershocks: Sense And Nonsense Making In A Disorganized Narrative, Donna Henson

Donna Henson

A disorganized narrative in both form and content, this article presents the storying and restorying of distant witness experience in the wake of recent natural disaster. A layered, fractured text; the writing blurs the lines between sense and nonsense making, self and other. Presenting the notion of verbal rumination as a theoretical method: This repetitive, ruminative narrative plays with the warm fuzzy and sometimes cold and prickly consequences of interpersonal storying. The resultant piece reflects a psychography of sorts, and seeks to make sense of the nonsensical, to organize the disorganized, to reconcile the irreconcilable. As with all natural disasters, …

Mother–Daughter Communication About Sex: The Influence Of Authoritative Parenting Style, Michelle Campo, Natasha Askelson, Sandi Smith Jun 2012

Mother–Daughter Communication About Sex: The Influence Of Authoritative Parenting Style, Michelle Campo, Natasha Askelson, Sandi Smith

Michelle L. Campo

Parent–child communication about sex has been shown to delay sexual activity and increase contraceptive and condom use. The influence of authoritative parenting style and mothers' perception of daughters' risk on communication about sex was examined in this study. Mothers in a random sample (n = 283) with daughters aged 9–15 years were mailed surveys asking about communication with their daughters regarding 11 sex-related topics. Multivariate linear regression was used to assess the influence of authoritative parenting style and mothers' perceptions of risk on the number of topics communicated about and age of the daughter at time of communication for a …

Understanding The Social Consequences Of Microblogging, L. Qiu, Angela K.-Y. Leung, N. Tang Jan 2012

Understanding The Social Consequences Of Microblogging, L. Qiu, Angela K.-Y. Leung, N. Tang

Ka Yee Angela LEUNG

Microblogging has recently become a new form of communication that is rapidly changing everyone’s life. Through services such as Twitter, millions of people can broadcast short messages to their followers via instant messaging, SMS, or web interfaces. However, few studies have been conducted to understand the impact of these emerging phenomenons. In this study, we seek to understand the social consequences of microblogging. Further, we want to examine which aspects of microblogging are related to the consequences. We recruited 120 undergraduates and randomly assigned them to one of four groups (29 to 31 participants in each group). Each group was …

The Effects Of Culture And Friendship On Rewarding Honesty And Punishing Deception, Cynthia S. Wang, Angela K.-Y. Leung, M. See, X. Gu Jan 2012

The Effects Of Culture And Friendship On Rewarding Honesty And Punishing Deception, Cynthia S. Wang, Angela K.-Y. Leung, M. See, X. Gu

Ka Yee Angela LEUNG

The present research explores whether the type of relationship one holds with deceptive or honest actors influences cross-cultural differences in reward and punishment. Research suggests that Americans reward honest actors more than they punish deceptive perpetrators, whereas East Asians reward and punish equally (Wang & Leung, 2010). Our research suggests that the type of relationship with the actor matters for East Asians, but not for Americans. East Asians exhibit favoritism toward their friends by rewarding more than punishing them, but reward and punish equally when the actors are strangers (Experiment 1 and 2); Americans reward more than they punish regardless …

Depictions Of Husbands In Miscarriage Accounts, Jennifer Fairchild, Michael Arrington Dec 2011

Depictions Of Husbands In Miscarriage Accounts, Jennifer Fairchild, Michael Arrington

Jennifer Fairchild Ph.D.

Little research has employed social support literature to investigate the support needs of women coping with the loss of a child—or the potential of partners to fulfill those needs. The researchers gathered miscarriage narratives through interviews with 24 women and analyzed the depictions of supportive and unsupportive responses from husbands. Narrators perceived partners either as ideal support sources or as clueless to enact support.
