The Seven Spices: Pumpkins, Puritans, And Pathogens In Colonial New England, Michael Sharbaugh Nov 2011

The Seven Spices: Pumpkins, Puritans, And Pathogens In Colonial New England, Michael Sharbaugh

Michael D Sharbaugh

Water sources in the United States' New England region are laden with arsenic. Particularly during North America's colonial period--prior to modern filtration processes--arsenic would make it into the colonists' drinking water. In this article, which evokes the biocultural evolution paradigm, it is argued that colonists offset health risks from the contaminant (arsenic poisoning) by ingesting copious amounts of seven spices--cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, cardamom, allspice, vanilla, and ginger. The inclusion of these spices in fall and winter recipes that hail from New England would therefore explain why many Americans associate them not only with the region, but with Thanksgiving and Christmas, …

Nicaragua 1979-1990. La Revolución Enredada. 2ª Edición., Salvador Marti I Puig

Salvador Marti i Puig

The Reorganization Of A Professional Sports League - A Critical Analysis Of The Restructuring Of The Australian National Basketball League, Winston Wing Hong To, Shayne Quick, Darwin Semotiuk

Winston Wing Hong To

There are numerous examples of professional sports leagues that have failed. Australia has witnessed professor soccer (National Soccer League) and rugby leagues (Super League, Australian Rugby Football League) disappear, be restructured, or reintroduced under a new brand and name (soccer: A-League, rugby league: National Rugby league) (MacDonald & Karg & Lock, 2010; Commonwealth of Australia, 2006). North America has seen the closure of a number of professional sports leagues such as the XFL (American Football), World Hockey Association (Ice Hockey), and the Canadian Soccer League (Football/Soccer) (Bostwick, 2007; Golokhov, nd). There are numerous reasons why these professional sports leagues fail. …

On 16 November 2004, the Singapore Parliament passed the Copyright (Amendment) Act (Act 52 of 2004) to amend the Copyright Act 1987 (the 'Act').1 These amendments, being the most extensive since the Act was last revised in 1999 and passed pursuant to Singapore’s obligations under the IP Chapter of the United States – Singapore Free Trade Agreement ('USSFTA'), came into force in Singapore on 1 January 2005. Not long before this, Parliament had already amended the Act by increasing the term of protection for authors' works to life plus 70 years (up from 50 years) and for sound recordings, cinematograph …

The Creation And Growth Of Information Technology Communication (Ict) Industrial Clusters: The New Zealand Case, Malcolm Fraser, Stephen Kelly Feb 2011

The Creation And Growth Of Information Technology Communication (Ict) Industrial Clusters: The New Zealand Case, Malcolm Fraser, Stephen Kelly

Adjunct Professor Stephen J Kelly

This paper is based on a review of literature into industrial clusters and subsequently discusses identified success factors within the context of ICT industrial clusters generally and New Zealand ICT industrial clusters in particular. It is argued that through identifying the success attributes underpinning industrial clusters a baseline can be established for decision-making by both industry vertical groups and various levels of government. It is also proposed that the application of this baseline logic to the development of New Zealand ICT clusters will enhance the domestic and international development of these clusters. The paper identifies that the key components of …

Can Culture Shape The Identity Of A Sport? A Case Study On Lifesaving Sport - Surf Lifesaving Australia And Lifesaving/Sauvetage Canada, Winston Wing Hong To

Winston Wing Hong To

Sport is an important marker of our country's culture and identity. Citizens within a country will cheer and support their sport teams if they are successful, or criticize and judge if they are doing poorly. The importance of culture within sport is an important indicator of a country's success or failure within international competitions; such as the Olympics and World Championships. However, can culture shape the identity of a sport within a country?

Lifesaving is a vital aspect of a country's swim program, as it focuses on reducing injury and death in, on, or around the water. Within Lifesaving, there …

Mentoring In The Context Of Latino Youth's Broader Village During Their Transition From High School, Julia Pryce

Julia Pryce

The aims of this study were to examine the mentoring and social network experiences of Latino youth during the high school transition. A mixed- methods approach was used to examine participants’ natural mentoring relationships before and after the transition along with the broader social networks of youth.A total of 32 Latino participants completed quantitative surveys before the high school transition and then participated in qualitative interviews 1 year later. Having a mentor at Time 1 predicted having a mentor at Time 2. Findings revealed three mentoring groups: participants with mentors at both time points, participants with a mentor at one …

Application Of And Responses To The Responsibility To Protect Norm At The Regional And Subregional Levels In Africa: Lessons For Implementation, Emmanuel Aning, Samuel Atuobi Dec 2010

Application Of And Responses To The Responsibility To Protect Norm At The Regional And Subregional Levels In Africa: Lessons For Implementation, Emmanuel Aning, Samuel Atuobi

Emmanuel Kwesi Aning

This paper contributes to discussion on moving the Responsibility to Protect (R2P) norm from concept to action by exploring how such shifts can be made from regional and subregional perspectives. We argue that recent events in Africa and the responses and actions of its major multilateral actor, the African Union (AU), and one of its regional economic communities, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), indicate the urgent the need for regional and subregional actors to lead in the implementation of this norm due to chronic instability that threatens populations in the African region. We further argue that implementing …

Challenging Democracy: Ethnicity In Postcolonial Fiji And Trinidad, Movindri Reddy Dec 2010

Challenging Democracy: Ethnicity In Postcolonial Fiji And Trinidad, Movindri Reddy

Movindri Reddy

Fiji and Trinidad are similar in terms of their colonial and postcolonial historical experiences, yet their political outcomes are different. The argument put forth is that constitutional reforms that were adopted by Fiji were unsuccessful because of systemic conditions specific to the country. Sustained by structural features such as land rights and chiefly jurisdiction, and more intangible factors such as cultural identity and nationalism, ethnic identity is the lens through which most public discourse occurs. By contrast, Trinidad does not have these corresponding institutional structures, and the existence of public spaces for the contestation of ethnic identities together with the …
