Harvesting Fertilized Rye Cover Crop: Simulated Revenue, Net Energy, And Drainage Nitrogen Loss, R. W. Malone, J. F. Obrycki, Douglas L. Karlen, T. C. Kaspar, D. B. Jaynes, T. B. Parkin, S. H. Lence, G. W. Feyereisen, Q. X. Fang, T. L. Richard, K. Gillette Aug 2019

Harvesting Fertilized Rye Cover Crop: Simulated Revenue, Net Energy, And Drainage Nitrogen Loss, R. W. Malone, J. F. Obrycki, Douglas L. Karlen, T. C. Kaspar, D. B. Jaynes, T. B. Parkin, S. H. Lence, G. W. Feyereisen, Q. X. Fang, T. L. Richard, K. Gillette

Douglas L Karlen

Harvesting fertilized rye (Secale cereale L.) cover crop has been suggested as a method to increase producer revenue and biofuel feedstock production, but drainage N loss impacts are currently unknown. Using the tested Root Zone Water Quality Model (RZWQM) across several N rates, spring application of 120 kg N ha-1 prior to winter rye harvest reduced drainage N loss by 54% compared with no cover crop and by 18% compared with planted rye that was neither fertilized nor harvested. Estimates of producer revenue and net energy were also positive, with 8.3 Mg ha-1 of harvested rye biomass. …

2019 Prevent Plant Impacts To South Dakota Grain Crop Value, Matthew Elliott, Lisa Elliott Aug 2019

2019 Prevent Plant Impacts To South Dakota Grain Crop Value, Matthew Elliott, Lisa Elliott

Matthew Elliott

The 2019 crop year has presented various challenges to South Dakota grain crop producers. A record number of prevented planting acres, late planted crops, and trade disputes are expected to significantly lower the value of grain crop production in South Dakota. Preliminary estimates of impact are outlined in the presentation.

Meandering Water In The Prairie Pothole Region Of South Dakota, Matthew Elliott, Lisa Elliott, Tong Wang Aug 2019

Meandering Water In The Prairie Pothole Region Of South Dakota, Matthew Elliott, Lisa Elliott, Tong Wang

Matthew Elliott

This study estimates the agricultural economic impact of the land use changes in the Prairie Pothole Region (PPR) of South Dakota.  The flooding of wetlands has been documented in this region after 1993. At the same time, the conversion of non-cropland to croplands has been observed.  Concerns have been raised if conversions to cropland are conducted on marginal acres that are susceptible to additional flooding.  We found that approximately 140,000 acres of agricultural land have been inundated.  We also found that the new areas of cropland are less prone to flooding than areas that were lost.

The Potential For Moral Hazard Behavior In Irrigation Decisions Under Crop Insurance, Paloch Suchato Jul 2019

The Potential For Moral Hazard Behavior In Irrigation Decisions Under Crop Insurance, Paloch Suchato

Paloch Suchato

The impact of current Federal Crop Insurance Program has attracted interests and
attention of many economists and policymakers. There have not been any studies that
examine the impact of crop insurance on agricultural water use and how different policy
designs would affect moral hazard in agricultural water use. Moral hazard could play a
role in irrigation decision by incentivizing farmer to choose riskier irrigation management
strategy. Without proper design, FCIC program could affect the long-term sustainability of
water resources and amplify the magnitude of the current problem such as aquifer depletion
and degradation of freshwater ecosystems. We use numerical simulation …

The Power Law Distribution Of Cumulative Coal Production, Andrew Balthrop, Siyu Quan May 2019

The Power Law Distribution Of Cumulative Coal Production, Andrew Balthrop, Siyu Quan

Andrew Balthrop

The coal industry is dominated by the largest mines, with 1% of coal mines in the US being responsible for 65% of cumulative production. This provides evidence that cumulative coal production may be well approximated by a
power law, where the amount of production is inversely proportionate to the distributional rank. Maximum likelihood and regression-based procedures estimate the counter-cumulative power law parameter to be less than one,
indicating there is no well-defined mean or variance for cumulative production. Goodness of fit tests indicate the power-law is a better fit to the data than other competing one-parameter distributions. Additionally, the powerlaw …

Sustainable Agriculture Lesson For Middle School Classrooms, Sara Colombe, Madhav P. Nepal, Jennifer Mclaughlin, Matthew L. Miller, Larry B. Browning, P. Troy White May 2019

Sustainable Agriculture Lesson For Middle School Classrooms, Sara Colombe, Madhav P. Nepal, Jennifer Mclaughlin, Matthew L. Miller, Larry B. Browning, P. Troy White

Madhav Nepal

In this lesson, students will learn about sustainability, where farmers/agriculturists can meet the needs of food, fiber, and fuel for the growing population. Students learn about growing population, its growth rate, major food source, sustainability barrel, potential ripple effects of positive impacts as well as the food waste and its effects.

Reparation Ecologies: Regimes Of Repair In Populist Agroecology, K. Valentine Cadieux, Stephen Carpenter, Alex Liebman, Renata Blumberg, Bhaskar Upadhyay Feb 2019

Reparation Ecologies: Regimes Of Repair In Populist Agroecology, K. Valentine Cadieux, Stephen Carpenter, Alex Liebman, Renata Blumberg, Bhaskar Upadhyay

K. Valentine Cadieux

Amidst the backdrop of attention to populism in general, it is instructive to understand populism through
social movements focused on food and agriculture. Agrarian populism is particularly salient in agrifood
movements. Agroecology has been widely identified as a domain of populist claims on environmental and
social governance surrounding agricultural-ecological and political-economic systems. As authoritarian
populist leaders gain power throughout the world at a time of expanding economic globalization and
contingent socio-ecological crises, contests over populism in agrifood regimes can highlight current
dynamics relevant for formative evaluation of alternative political agroecology strategies, and of populist
environmental governance more broadly. Can populism …

Tackling Undeclared Work In The Agricultural Sector, With A Focus Upon Seasonal Workers And Horticulture: Background Paper For The European Platform On Tackling Undeclared Work Seminar, Colin C. Williams Jan 2019

Tackling Undeclared Work In The Agricultural Sector, With A Focus Upon Seasonal Workers And Horticulture: Background Paper For The European Platform On Tackling Undeclared Work Seminar, Colin C. Williams

Colin C Williams

This background paper briefly sets out the prevalence of undeclared work in the agricultural sector in the European Union and the approaches and tools available for tackling such work, with a focus upon horticulture and undeclared seasonal workers. The intention is to stimulate the thoughts of participants attending the European Platform Tackling Undeclared Work seminar on “Tackling undeclared work in the agricultural sector: with a focus upon seasonal workers and horticulture” (to be held in Brussels on January 24th 2019) on potential policy which could be adopted to transform undeclared work into declared work in the agricultural sector, especially with …
