The Self And Individualism: An Analysis On The Current Regulations Of Academic Writing, Bonnibel S. H. Walker
The Self And Individualism: An Analysis On The Current Regulations Of Academic Writing, Bonnibel S. H. Walker
WRIT: Journal of First-Year Writing
Individualism, the focus or emphasis on the self, is a highly discussed and debated topic in writing. This is mostly regarding how the self should be addressed and utilized in writing. Although it there is also debate about what the self truly is, and how one can represent it in their work, veering into more abstract thought and theorizing.
The amount of individualism, or the “self” that one is able to, or should imprint onto one’s writing varies widely across numerous genres of academic writing, or even writing in general. For example, in much of scientific writing there’s a broad …
Rebuilding Common Purpose For The 21st Century With New Civic Infrastructure, Dowell Myers, Karen Trapenberg Frick
Rebuilding Common Purpose For The 21st Century With New Civic Infrastructure, Dowell Myers, Karen Trapenberg Frick
Journal of Comparative Urban Law and Policy
Increasing polarization and division are the greatest challenges to the U.S. today, because they prevent cooperation in decision making about growing problems of major consequence. The related long swing in rising individualism is assessed for how it undermines common purpose. We survey the ideological divide and how it intersects with preferred urban development patterns, negotiation styles (compromise or hard line), and diverse views on mitigations for stemming the COVID-19 pandemic. An especially potent factor was rapidly changing racial projections, the reckless framing of which led to exaggerated perceptions of “demographic threat” and a widened partisan divide. Renewed civic infrastructure is …
Time To Stop Worrying: A Correlational Study On Individualist Versus Collectivist Time Perspectives And Anxiety, Anna Waldron
Time To Stop Worrying: A Correlational Study On Individualist Versus Collectivist Time Perspectives And Anxiety, Anna Waldron
ELAIA
Purpose Research has indicated a significant relationship between anxiety and time perspective (TP), which is the way one views life in terms of the past, present or future. TP is broken down into five facets based on the Zimbardo Time Perspective Inventory (ZTPI), including past negative (PN), past positive (PP), present fatalistic (PF), present hedonistic (PH), and future (F) time perspectives (Zimbardo & Boyd, 1999). Time perspective is thought to be impacted by one’s culture, although there is a lack of representation in studies on TP cross-culturally, which makes it difficult to generalize. In order to add to the research …
Individualism And Self-Interest In Atlas Shrugged, Kush Desai
Individualism And Self-Interest In Atlas Shrugged, Kush Desai
Compass: An Undergraduate Journal of American Political Ideas
The dystopian world portrayed in Atlas Shrugged is an example of the collectivist ideal gone awry. Rand demonstrates the victory of the “men of ability” over the looters and the triumph of self-interest over collective duty.
Author information: Kush Desai is a third-year student studying Computer Engineering at The University of Texas at Austin.
Cultural Challenges Of Bluebird Bio Expansion Into Germany, Igor Ban
Cultural Challenges Of Bluebird Bio Expansion Into Germany, Igor Ban
Journal of Global Awareness
BlueBird Bio is a biotechnology multinational corporation (MNC), with headquarters in Cambridge, Massachusetts, specializing in gene therapy solutions for autoimmune diseases and cancer. The company was recently approved, in Germany, for their new drug Zynteglo for the treatment of betta thalassemia. This approval opened the door for further investment in the European market, starting with the contracting of Apceth Biopharma and purchases of new land and equipment to establish a permanent residence in the country. The opening of the new European headquarters will demonstrate new challenges for BlueBird Bio, as cultural and institutional differences between the host country and parent …

American Exceptionalism And Individualism: "It Won't Happen To Me, And If It Happened To You, It's Your Own Fault!", Beck O. Adelante

2020, and everything leading up to it, has been overwhelming. As we face a national election with unprecedented consequences, it is time we reflect and think about how and why we ended up here, and what we can do moving forward.
Communication Administration As A Tri-Voiced Sustainable Community, Ronald C. Arnett
Communication Administration As A Tri-Voiced Sustainable Community, Ronald C. Arnett
Journal of the Association for Communication Administration
Books and authors have challenged the focus on “me” alone, rejecting “individualism” that seeks to stand above social context and constraints (Tocqueville, 1955; Arnett, 2019; Arnett, 2020), “narcissism” that falls in love with one’s own image (Lasch, 1985), and “emotivism” that limits decision making to personal preferences (MacIntyre, 1984). Contrary to a focus on an individual abstracted from a social context, one finds an emphasis on community (Arnett, 1986). When, however, a conception of community embraces only those empirically present, it becomes an abstraction oblivious of the phenomenological considerations of persons before and after the present moment. This essay textures …

The Turk And The Yankee: A Cross-Cultural Comparison Between Turkish And American Managers, Heather Halub, Allison Sauber, James Stück
The Turk And The Yankee: A Cross-Cultural Comparison Between Turkish And American Managers, Heather Halub, Allison Sauber, James Stück
Journal of the Indiana Academy of the Social Sciences
With Turkey’s developing role as a lead nation among emerging markets, the field of cross-cultural management becomes a key contributor to the interactions between Turkish and American professionals in the workplace. This study uses models of national cultural differences based primarily on the findings of Hofstede (1984), but it also incorporates those of Trompenaars and Hampden-Turner (1998) and the GLOBE project (2002), resulting in a comparative cross-cultural management analysis. In combining both academic theory and actual international experience, this paper illustrates that, through effective cross-cultural management, profound understanding and harmony can exist between international managers.
