Ancient Maya Commerce: Multidisciplinary Research At Chunchucmil, Scott R. Hutson

Anthropology Faculty Book Gallery

Ancient Maya Commerce presents nearly two decades of multidisciplinary research at Chunchucmil, Yucatan, Mexico—a thriving Classic period Maya center organized around commercial exchange rather than agriculture. An urban center without a king and unable to sustain agrarian independence, Chunchucmil is a rare example of a Maya city in which economics, not political rituals, served as the engine of growth. Trade was the raison d’être of the city itself.

Using a variety of evidence—archaeological, botanical, geomorphological, and soil-based—contributors show how the city was a major center for both short- and long-distance trade, integrating the Guatemalan highlands, the Gulf of Mexico, and …

Lifeways In The Northern Mayan Lowlands: New Approaches To Archaeology In The Yucatán Peninsula, Jennifer P. Mathews, Bethany A. Morrison

Faculty Authored and Edited Books & CDs

The flat, dry reaches of the northern Yucatán Peninsula have been largely ignored by archaeologists drawn to the more illustrious sites of the south. This book is the first volume to focus entirely on the northern Maya lowlands, presenting a broad cross-section of current research projects in the region by both established and up-and-coming scholars. To address the heretofore unrecognized importance of the northern lowlands in Maya prehistory, the contributors cover key topics relevant to Maya studies: the environmental and historical significance of the region, the archaeology of both large and small sites, the development of agriculture, resource management, ancient …

Archeological Exploration Of Land's Ford Canal Chester County, South Carolina, E. Thomas Hemmings

Research Manuscript Series

Land's Ford Canal was built on the west bank of the Catawba River in Chester District, South Carolina, between 1820 and 1823. The canal bypassed two miles of shoals, and accomodated a fall of 32 feet by means of two pairs of lifting locks. Archeological exploration of the canal was undertaken in December, 1969, in order to determine the shape and grade of the bed and other construction details. After reconnaissance of the canal course and surface features, eight backhoe trenches were placed across the bed and banks at selected locations. The profiles exposed in these trenches revealed less about …
