Scientists have shown that humans significantly contributed to global warming through greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the last two centuries. The 2022 United Nations (UN) Climate Change Conference (COP27) and 2022 UN Biodiversity Conference (COP15) focused on setting goals and collective action to address and reverse these negative consequences. Climate and sustainability experts discussed key insights from COP27 and COP15 at a recent panel discussion organized by the Sim Kee Boon Institute (SKBI) at SMU.

Why Agriculture Productivity Falls: The Political Economy of Agrarian Transition in Developing Countries offers a new explanation for the decline in agricultural productivity in developing countries. Transcending the conventional approaches to understanding productivity using agricultural inputs and factors of production, this work brings in the role of formal and informal institutions that govern transactions, property rights, and accumulation. This more robust methodology leads to a comprehensive, well-balanced lens to perceive agrarian transition in developing countries. Each year, the Sustainability 489 Capstone class works with a community partner whose needs align with the initiatives of the Department of Sustainability. This year, the SUST 489 class received a recommendation from Dr. Joe Kantenbacher to work with the Vermilion Public Library. Our class worked with Daniel Burniston, Vermillion Public Library Director, to best identify the needs of the Vermillion community. The class, our library partners, and our professor Dr. Meghann Jarchow worked together to decide upon a Library of Things project, where we will assist the library in providing items for library patrons to check out.
