Menstrual Cycle Phase And Gender Effects On Hippocampally Modulated Sensorimotor Processes: Classical Eyeblink Conditioning And Ppi Of The Acoustic Startle Response, Jacqueline L. Holloway

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Experimental animal research studies have demonstrated that hormones affect neurological physiology and morphology in areas such as the striatum, hypothalamus, and hippocampus. How the specific effects of estrogen and progesterone are manifested behaviorally in humans, however, is not yet understood. The current study tested sensorimotor responding and simple motor learning in three groups of women - follicular/low hormone, luteal/high hormone, oral contraceptive - and men. Using PPI as an operational measure, this study was designed to expand limited findings which report menstrual cycle phase effects on pre-pulse inhibition (PPI) of the acoustic startle response (ASR), a direct measure of sensorimotor …

Leftist Populism And Sustainable Development In Latin America, Carina Kjelstad May 2006

Leftist Populism And Sustainable Development In Latin America, Carina Kjelstad

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Sustainable development still remains the best option to secure a viable future. Why are some leaders more prone to implement sustainable development policies than others, and does the leaders' political orientation affect such decision-making? Leaders are often faced with constraints that make them choose policies that do not necessarily lead to sustainability from an ecological point of view. This thesis addresses these issues by examining two case studies that involve an analysis of the sustainable development policies implemented by President Lula in Brazil and President Chavez in Venezuela and the constraints that have hindered them in doing so.

Neo-Populism And Political Mass Communication In Latin America: Press Freedom, Media Access, And Democracy, Nagidmy Marquez Acosta

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

This paper studies the relationship between neo-populism and political mass communication in Latin America. Through a quantitative assessment, this research aims to examine the role that media politics plays in strengthening democracy and neo-populism in eighteen Latin American countries. In particular, the author examines two key elements of the political mass communication concept: press freedom and media access. Can neo-populism be understood without an assessment of media politics? Do political pressure and control of media content, combined with widespread access to different channels of mass communication strengthen neo-populism in Latin American? The author concludes that while Latin American countries are …

Setting The Pole: Critical Factors In Nascar's Success, Matthew N. Maisano

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

This study examines the critical factors that make NASCAR so successful. Now known as the fastest growing sport, NASCAR started out as a limited funding, dirt track racing sport to a multimillion dollar, super speedway sport. Just like every sport, NASCAR has gone through many changes and this study will further discuss how it went from a sport to a business and then to entertainment and now a lifestyle. In the beginning NASCAR drivers were renegades with ties to moonshining; today drivers are considered role models and are active in Pop Culture. Constant changes in the sport have allowed it …

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

So you consider yourself a fan of basketball. You have a favorite college team and player as well as a favorite professional team and player. You've been to tons of professional and college basketball games in your lifetime, but have you ever stopped to notice the differences between the two? For example, why do college players foul out of the game after five fouls and pros after six? If a professional player behaves in a negative manner, he gets a fine. If a college player does the same, there's no fine, he gets suspended. Are the punishments equal? If you …

Over the years, I've observed South Asian females and males alike struggling to fulfill religious and cultural obligations to their family while fitting in with the norms of society. I also learned of the term "ABCD" which stands for American Born Confused Desi. This refers to people of Desi or South Asian origin living in the United States. "Confused" refers to their confusion regarding their identity from either being born in America or living here since an early age and having been exposed to American culture more than their ancestral culture. That is when I realized that I was not …
