Since the introduction of the first Cryptocurrency, Bitcoin, in 2008 there have been many an innumerable amount created. This begs the question, although they are labeled Cryptocurrencies, are they really currencies under the modern definition of Money? This paper will analyze the functions of cryptocurrencies concluding with the idea that currently Cryptocurrencies behave more like a Speculative Asset then an alternative form of money.
