The purpose of this article is to demonstrate the value of teaching a Black Lives Matter course in a liberal arts curriculum. Drawing from original case study experience of teaching the Black Lives Matter course at a predominately white, liberal arts institution, the argument is not only pedagogical, but practical for the times in which education about issues of contemporary significance for all students. Teaching a Black Lives Matter course with a historically-situated, community-grounded and solutions-oriented approach fosters the learning environment of inclusivity to which many campuses aspire. Race and Pedagogy Journal: Teaching and Learning for Justice

This case study details the classroom dynamics of a Race and Ethnicity course and how to create a comfortable and engaging environment. To determine what students believe leads to a productive dialogue, two colleagues at a small liberal arts college in Maryland used in-depth interview data from ten students to identify four key pedagogical techniques. These strategies were the basis for teaching a group that includes students who are resistant to the existence and implications of white privilege. This article looks at processes of name changing, in its politics and means of persuasion with specific audiences and national identity implications. Malcolm X had to change his name to affirm his individual dignity and human well-being, and the USA in the 21st-century, when it becomes a color-majority, white-minority country, must, in order to have the chance to become a multi-racial democracy and jettison white supremacy and white privilege, the United States must change its name, collaboratively.
