Open Education Resources (OER) are digital materials used for educational purposes that are intentionally made available to the public. An increasing number of university faculty create and use such resources in their teaching. Partnering with the creators of OER is an excellent way to gather high-quality, unique content for the repository while helping to fulfill the goal of making OER widely available. This session will introduce considerations regarding the value and process of building an OER collection in the repository.

A large format infographic describing the system for citation which permits reference to legal or law-related information in any medium without requiring reference to proprietary products. Includes a timeline of the Universal Citation Guide from 1993 to 2012, citation elements, a list of states and territories that adopted the practice and an interactive QR code for accessing AALL's page on this citation format. The poster also encouraged viewers to advocate for adopting Universal citation with judges, attorneys and legislators.

I will spend the first half of May’12 in Estelí, Nicaragua, as a volunteer member of a project to teach product innovation and development skills to students and faculty of the Nicaraguan national university system. The two leaders, Engineering and Business faculty members from GVSU, require no special expertise or language skills for volunteers, but are excited at the prospect of having a library professional among the support group in this year’s seventh annual iteration of the program. I look forward to sharing what I learn about engineering and academics in a culture eager to develop.

This presentation briefly describes the S.C. coastline and inland waterways, and gives an overview of basic legal considerations regarding wreck ownership and management. It then discusses some of the wrecks that the MRD and others have been involved with such as the H.L. Hunley, U.S.S. Housatonic, U.S.S. Keokuk, Peedee, etc., and the techniques that the MRD uses in locating and evaluating wrecks.

The presentation describes whaling by the Basques, both before and during their operations in the area of Red Bay (Canada), as well as the land-/maritime-based archaeology which began in the 1970s in the Red Bay area to reconstruct the Basque operations there. The location of the wreck of the Basque whaler, San Juan, was found, artifacts recovered, and much was learned about whaler design and construction.

Finding Historic Shipwrecks In The Dynamic Coastal Environment Of Winyah Bay: A Geoarchaeological Approach, Christopher F. Amer

This presentation discusses a collaborative research project between the University of South Carolina’s South Carolina Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology-Maritime Research Division, the College of Charleston, and Coastal Carolina University’s Marine Science Department, interfacing historic coastal zone paleoreconstructions with an archaeological marine remote sensing survey to locate, assess, identify, and conduct preliminary documentation of the Spanish Capitana. The Capitana, one of six vessels used in a failed settlement attempt by the Spanish Crown to gain a foothold in the New World, was lost in 1526 when it grounded and sank approaching Winyah Bay, South Carolina.

From 1998 through 2003, the Maritime Research Division (MRD) of the South Carolina Institute of Archaeology (SCIAA) at the University of South Carolina (USC) conducted research into the presence of US Navy shipwrecks in South Carolina waters. The US Navy claimed 96 shipwrecks in the state. However, historical research confirmed that, in fact, only 47 Navy-owned vessels met their demise in state waters. The remaining shipwrecks include, US Army transports, vessels owned by the Confederacy at the time of their sinking, and a number of vessels that flew foreign flags.
