Fostering Critical Thinking In First-Year Students Through Information Literacy Instruction, Mandi Goodsett, Hanna Schmillen Jan 2022

Fostering Critical Thinking In First-Year Students Through Information Literacy Instruction, Mandi Goodsett, Hanna Schmillen

Michael Schwartz Library Publications

As students encounter high volumes of misinformation in online environments, cultivating critical thinking is an important goal of information literacy instruction, especially for first-year college students, who are just beginning to develop cognitive habits in their early years of postsecondary schooling. However, this study demonstrates that the relationship between critical thinking and information literacy is not obvious, and relatively little has been recently studied regarding how academic librarians incorporate critical thinking into their library instruction. Through a series of in-depth interviews, the researchers sought to understand how academic librarians who primarily instruct first-year college students conceive of, teach, and assess …

Collaborative Test Bank Development: Multi-Institutional & Pandemic Style, Anita Walz, Eli Jamison, Candice Vander Weerdt, Mandi Goodsett

Michael Schwartz Library Publications

During 2020-21 two business faculty from different institutions together with OER librarians, undergraduate students, and graduate assistants conspired to create a faculty-access-only test bank aligned to senior undergraduate-level open textbook, Strategic Management (2020) and AACSB Standards. Test bank development followed instructional and ethical practices for non-disposable assignments including faculty development of assignments, student ownership of student work, student “opt in” to go public, choice of no or some student attribution, financial incentives for various project participants, project MOUs, professional copyediting, and public release to vetted requestors. This presentation describes our respective motivations, process, how we found one another, why the …

Going The Distance For International Students: Academic Integrity Support Online, Mandi Goodsett

Michael Schwartz Library Publications

Targeted instruction that teaches international students about plagiarism is an important service that academic libraries can offer. Offering such instruction as an asynchronous, online workshop has distinct benefits in terms of flexibility and ease of learning, but it must be designed with the needs of international students in mind. This study describes one library’s online anti-plagiarism workshop, as well as the results of a qualitative study to determine how such a workshop can best be designed to meet the needs of international students.

Commitment, Respect, And Trust: The Building Blocks Of A Strong Mentoring Relationship, Mandi Goodsett Jan 2021

Commitment, Respect, And Trust: The Building Blocks Of A Strong Mentoring Relationship, Mandi Goodsett

Michael Schwartz Library Publications

Many formal mentoring programs only call for one characteristic in prospective mentors and mentees: a willingness to participate. However, research has shown that there are specific mentor (and mentee) characteristics and behaviors that encourage a meaningful, lasting mentoring experience. Generally, these characteristics and behaviors fall into three categories: (1) a commitment to the relationship, (2) mutual respect between mentor and mentee, and (3) mutual trust.1 Fortunately, these attributes can be nurtured in mentors and mentees, especially when the relationship is given careful forethought. In this chapter, the mentoring relationship is examined, particularly the central elements of mutual commitment, respect, and …

Whip Up A Statewide Team Of Affordable Learning Ambassadors, Mandi Goodsett

Michael Schwartz Library Publications

In 2016, OhioLINK, Ohio’s statewide higher education library consortium, reached out to its member library deans and directors asking for suggestions about emerging demands that might be addressed at the statewide level. Library leadership expressed a need to address textbook affordability and to explore how libraries and OhioLINK could lead the charge to make course materials more affordable. OhioLINK developed a multi-faceted strategy, based on a long history of determining different pathways that could work for different institutions depending on funding, staffing, faculty interest, and administrative support. The first course of action was to “whip up” a team of library …

Inviting Students Into The Kitchen: Inquiry-Based Learning As A Critical Thinking Instructional Strategy, Mandi Goodsett Jan 2020

Inviting Students Into The Kitchen: Inquiry-Based Learning As A Critical Thinking Instructional Strategy, Mandi Goodsett

Michael Schwartz Library Publications

This recipe was developed to teach first- or second-year students source evaluation using inquiry-based learning. The method could be modified for a variety of settings, including online. The purpose behind using inquiry-based learning is to develop students’ cognitive habits of questioning, so they are able to transfer the evaluation skills they learn in the library session to other contexts. The evaluation process is focused less on finding quick answers and more on developing meaningful, searching questions about sources that are found as evidence.

Serving The Needs Of International Students: A Qualitative Study, Mandi Goodsett, Michael Baumgartner

Michael Schwartz Library Publications

This study attempts to discover the barriers that international music students encounter when using the library and conducting research at North American academic institutions. To these ends we implemented multiple semi-structured interviews. Most studies that have been conducted about international students and information literacy employ a survey, but other qualitative means of study reveal important insights into the needs of this population. In-depth qualitative research that explores the experiences of international music students has the potential to cultivate better understanding of this phenomenon so that music librarians and faculty can more effectively serve this distinct population.

A Short Guide To Being Mentored: Tips For Strong Relationships, Mandi Goodsett Jan 2019

A Short Guide To Being Mentored: Tips For Strong Relationships, Mandi Goodsett

Michael Schwartz Library Publications

In the past several decades, scores of books about mentoring and librarianship have been published. There are academic articles, webinars, and workshops that librarians can use to learn more about why mentoring is important and how to be a good mentor. However, in my own experience, most of these resources explore mentoring from the perspective of the mentor, not the mentee.

Five Ways To Cultivate Open Education On Your Campus, Mandi Goodsett Oct 2018

Five Ways To Cultivate Open Education On Your Campus, Mandi Goodsett

Michael Schwartz Library Publications

As academic institutions focus attention on student retention and rising higher education costs, increasing attention has been paid to reducing the costs of instructional materials. Studies show that the high cost of textbooks, for instance, can impact student course choices, academic performance, and retention. Many faculty have found free, open textbooks and other open educational resources to be a successful alternative to expensive commercial textbooks. However, initiating an open education or affordable learning program on your campus can be tricky. Faculty are sometimes resistant to open education, administrators don’t always understand it, and librarians only have so much time to …

Critical Thinking And The Acrl Framework: Fake News And Fallacies, Mandi Goodsett Oct 2017

Critical Thinking And The Acrl Framework: Fake News And Fallacies, Mandi Goodsett

Michael Schwartz Library Publications

Critical thinking is characterized by the careful, reflective judgement of ideas as a guide for action. The dispositions and skills of critical thinking share a lot with the ACRL Frameworks’ frame, “Authority is Constructed and Contextual,” which many librarians are already attempting to incorporate into their teaching. Informed by the critical thinking education literature, librarians teaching about authority (even in one-shot library sessions) can encourage critical thinking skills and dispositions, which help students overcome their own flawed thinking and make better decisions. This presentation will explore the many decades of research about critical thinking in the classroom, and demonstrate its …
