Library Scholarship

After a year of limited outreach and collection development activities due to COVID, staff and librarians at one university revitalized their library displays to both address gaps in the collection and increase student engagement with monographs. By activating the collection through monthly themed displays, librarians have increased holdings related to diversity, equity, and inclusion, thus improving representation on the shelves. Participants will discover how active displays that incorporate both academic and recreational holdings can serve a dual purpose as collection development and outreach activities, making the most of limited funds for monograph acquisitions. Attendees from academic and public libraries should …

The 2021 Washington Library Association (WLA) Conference’s shift from in-person to virtual was a decision that felt appropriate and not at all surprising, given the uncertainty surrounding large in-person events due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. We, a group of three early-career librarians at Central Washington University (CWU), had been eager to set off on a mini road trip together to bond, gain insight into the field of librarianship, and network with our peers at other institutions. When the conference changed to a virtual format, we decided to make a collaborative document to share our notes on the conference sessions, …

Building An Assessment-Focused Information Literacy Program For Agriculture And Related Disciplines: A Collaborative Approach, Katherine O'Clair

Library Scholarship

Students pursuing degrees in STEM fields, including agriculture and related sciences, need to develop discipline-specific information skills in order to be successful in their educational pursuits and to meet tomorrow’s challenges in their future work as agriculture professionals. Oftentimes, information literacy programs are situated in general education or liberal arts courses, leaving the discipline-specific courses to incorporate information literacy only when and where possible. As STEM librarians, we know this is not sufficient, but the challenge of building a STEM-specific information literacy program can be overwhelming, especially when instructors have little time to incorporate any additional content into their already-packed …

Engaging That Other Audience: Encouraging Faculty Involvement In Information Literacy Using New Technology, Jennifer Kelley

Library Scholarship

Literature on the subject shows that information literacy programs truly thrive when they receive support and involvement from teaching faculty. While efforts to integrate information literacy instruction into the curriculum and collaborating with faculty are not new, many of the opportunities and tools for doing so are.

Whether you have full-support from all faculty (lucky you!) or varying levels of involvement from isolated departments or instructors here and there, we all have access to the tools we need to spark interest, take conversations to the next level, engage individuals, and create collaborative environments for designing information literacy sessions and programs.
