This poster presents the findings to date from the IMLS grant “Making Space for Young Adults in Public Libraries,” which represents the first attempt to systematically examine Young Adult (YA) space practices in public libraries. We will illustrate the common themes that have emerged from the study’s three different approaches to data collection and analysis of current YA space practices: surveys to YA library patrons and adult library staff, analysis of YA space video footage, and the replication and analysis of physical YA spaces in the immersive 3D world of Second Life.

Four current MLIS graduate student Research Assistants will present current findings of the IMLS grant “Making Space for Young Adults in Public Libraries: Establishing a Research Foundation." Libraries In The ‘Hood: A Social History Of The Florence And Graham Branch Libraries In The Community Of Florence-Firestone, 1912-2012, Jonathan P. Bell

This study explores the history of the Florence and Graham branch libraries in the unincorporated community of Florence-Firestone in South Central Los Angeles. Two of the oldest county library branches, Florence and Graham have no published histories. Similarly, no scholarly history has been written about Florence-Firestone. Only modest historical work has been published about the County of Los Angeles Public Library system. In addressing these gaps, this thesis serves as the first historical study of the Florence and Graham libraries and the Florence-Firestone community.
