A study was performed on at-risk students in the Midland Independent School District, Midland, Texas, utilizing Neuro Linguistic Programming as a counseling technique for improving the self-esteem of ninth grade students. Students were divided into control and treatment groups and pretested and post-tested using the School Attitude Measure. The treatment group was given twelve sessions of counseling utilizing Neuro Linguistic Programming. The subtests. Academic Self-Concept, Performance and Reference Based, and Instructional Mastery indicated a favorable trend. Adolescents who run away from home cause major problems for themselves, for their parents, and for society. In this study runaways (n = 112) are compared to non-runaways (n = 211) in their perceptions- of self, their parents and the world in which they live by use of a self-reporting survey. It was hypothesized that runaways would have perceptions of self, parents, and the world that would be skewed to society's unacceptable end of the scale. The puqjose of the present thesis was to examine the relationship among perceived coaching behaviors, several motivational constructs (within the framework of Harters motivation theory), and continuance to participate in tennis. More specifically, male (N= 58) and female (N= 65) high school varsity tennis players from district 4,5 A (Texas) University Interscholastic League assessed their coaches behaviors in relation to perceived success and competence, effort, enjoyment, challenge in competitive tennis and participation in tennis upon graduation. This study ascertained what happened to the graduates of the Education/Counseling program at the University of Texas of the Permian Basin. A questionnaire was mailed to 155 graduates from this program. 59 usable questionnaires were returned which determined what happened to the graduates after they received their degrees and what changes should be .considered for the program. Results showed that overall the program at UTPB is an adequate program and many of the respondents are working.in the field of counseling.

This project examined the effects a confidant had on adult survivors of childhood sexual abuse. The subjects were volunteer adult survivors of childhood sexual abuse solicited from undergraduate and graduate psychology classes at the University of Texas of the Permian Basin. Volunteers completed a childhood sexual abuse questionnaire, a confidant questionnaire, the Jaloweic Coping Scale and the Brief Symptom Inventory in a structured interview. The Jaloweic Coping Scale determined the coping styles and the Brief Symptom Inventory determined the symptom level. Those subjects that had a confidant were expected to have more successful coping styles and fewer symptoms as adults. …

A study was performed on at-risk students in the Midland Independent School District, Midland, Texas utilizing Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) as an alternative counseling technique for improving the cognitive abilities of students. Students were divided into control and experimental groups and pre and post-tested with the Developing Cognitive Abilities Test, (Second Edition) (DCAT) 1990. The experimental group was given twelve sessions of treatment utilizing Neuro-Linguistic Programming. Results of the study showed a trend toward improved strategizing for learning.

This study investigated the hypothesis that female high-achievers possess lower self-esteem than their male counterparts at the high school level. This hypothesis was derived from an analysis of the self-esteem theory in relation to sex related roles and cultural norms. The hypothesis was tested using high school juniors and seniors, 37 male and 48 female students who were enrolled in Advanced Placement Honor classes at Odessa High School. Results showed that the females’ mean scores were considerably lower in each category of the Tennessee Self-Concept Scale. This study examined the symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in sexually abused children. Sixty-seven children volunteered to participate in this study. Of the 67 children, 33 (26 female and 7 male) were sexually abused and 34 (22 female and 12 male) were non-sexually abused. Several instruments were employed to assess the severity of the symptoms of PTSD including the Children's PTSD Inventory, the Child Behavior Checklist, and the Children's Depression Inventory, as well as others. The results of this study showed that sexually abused children have more symptoms of PTSD than non-sexually abused children. Early diagnosis and treatment of …

The purpose of this investigation was to determine whether the type of written or verbal positive comment regarding a child's accomplishment influences subsequent interest in a task. A preliminary investigation of literature revealed that often rewards and praise negatively alter children's behavior. The writer tested the hypothesis derived from this investigation that non- evaluative descriptive comments, commonly called encouragement, positively affect children more than evaluative praise comments. 32 kindergarten and 36 third grade children received evaluative praise comments and 31 kindergarten and 42 third grade children received non- evaluative descriptive comments on drawings for three days.
