The greatest challenge faced by the mine action community in 2006 was the aftermath of the armed conflict in southern Lebanon that left as many as 1 million unexploded cluster munitions across the south. This was the first time since the Iraq war of 2003 that the UN system had to deploy assets under the Framework for Mine Action Planning and Rapid Response.
