Two Views On The Increasing Importance Of Library Access In The Seventeenth Century: Gabriel Naudé And Claude Clement, Erin M. Grant
Two Views On The Increasing Importance Of Library Access In The Seventeenth Century: Gabriel Naudé And Claude Clement, Erin M. Grant
Georgia Library Quarterly

Adequate user access to library materials includes physical access as well as providing a navigable system of organization that allows users to find needed materials. Although the privileging of access over preservation may seem like a modern concept, two seminal library treatises published a year apart in seventeenth-century France championed the issue of increased library access, especially by establishing usable organization in their respective collections: Gabriel Naudé’s Avis pour dresser une bibliothèque and Claude Clement’s Musei, sive …

The recent economic downturn has affected businesses and educational organizations. Funding for higher education institutions from federal, state and private sectors is shrinking and even disappearing. We have to think of something else to acquire the funds we need to enhance library services. In this article, we share our success story on how the Lawrence V. Johnson Library at Southern Polytechnic State University received a grant to fund our Web-Scale Discovery Service.

Information And Interaction Needs Of Distance Students: Are Academic Libraries Meeting The Challenge?, Adelia Grabowsky
Georgia Library Quarterly
One of the trends currently affecting academic libraries is higher education’s expanding use of online instruction and a rising number of totally online degree programs. As libraries have transitioned from primarily print holdings to a growing reliance on electronic formats, access has become more convenient for all, including distance students. However, the greater availability of e-resources can create a disconnect between the materials used by students and the institution that provides those resources, as well as the librarians who serve as instructors and guides. Libraries have struggled to close the gap by reinventing themselves as a ‘third place’ which students …

An Annotated Bibliography On Bias In Library Services And Collections, Denise Dimsdale
Georgia Library Quarterly
This annotated bibliography provides a selection of resources that delve into the topic of bias as it relates to library services and collections in the 21st century. Globalization, corporate hegemony, Internet search engines, and technologies such as virtual reference contribute to an environment where the librarian must be aware of personal and external biases in order to make appropriate decisions. The resources presented touch on ethics, neutrality, social responsibility, advocacy, selection and censorship. This broad spectrum of bias related topics will be especially helpful for librarians providing reference services and collection development in today’s library information environment.

Teaching Government Information In Information Literacy Credit Classes, Emily Rogers
Teaching Government Information In Information Literacy Credit Classes, Emily Rogers
Georgia Library Quarterly
This paper reviews the teaching of credit-bearing information literacy courses and government information, reports questionnaire responses from librarians who teach these courses, and argues that revising the ways we teach government information in for-credit courses will help students achieve information literacy. A focus on government information as critical thinking and subject access resources, rather than as unique documents collections or formats, can remove barriers for researchers, particularly in classes that allow students an entire term to develop skills. In addition, librarians will increase their comfort levels addressing government information and develop ways to teach students to use these resources within …
