Earth Is (Mostly) Flat: Apportionment Of The Flux Of Continental Sediment Over Millennial Time Scales: Reply, J K. Willenbring, Alexandru T. Codilean, B Mcelroy

We thank Warrick et al. (2014) for the Comment on our recent synthesis of 10Be-derived denudation rates (Willenbring et al., 2013), in which we suggested that gently sloping areas, representing ∼90% of the Earth’s land surface, have sufficiently high rates of denudation to produce a majority of mass fluxes to the world’s ocean.

First, Warrick et al. take issue with labeling our global cosmogenic nuclide denudation fluxes “sediment” and with the inferred comparisons to other sediment yield apportionment studies. We apologize for instances of unclear wording related to the terms: sediment production, sediment to the oceans, and mass flux. Unlike …

Dominating The Antarctic Environment: Bryophytes In A Time Of Change, Jessica Bramley-Alves, Diana H. King, Sharon A. Robinson, Rebecca E. Miller

Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health - Papers: part A

Polar ecosystems, and particularly Antarctica, are one of the few environs in which bryophytes dominate the flora. Their success in these regions is due to bryophytes’ ability to withstand an array of harsh conditions through their poikilohydric lifestyle. However, the unique conditions that allow bryophytes to proliferate over other forms of vegetation also create considerable limitations to growth and photosynthetic activity. High latitude areas are already experiencing some of the most pronounced and rapid climatic change, especially in the Arctic, the Sub-Antarctic Islands and Maritime Antarctica, and these are predicted to continue over the next century. This climatic change is …

The Effects Of Spending Time Outdoors In Daylight On The Psychosocial Wellbeing Of Older People And Family Carers: A Comprehensive Systematic Review Protocol, Victoria Traynor, Ritin Fernandez, Katherine Caldwell Jan 2013

The Effects Of Spending Time Outdoors In Daylight On The Psychosocial Wellbeing Of Older People And Family Carers: A Comprehensive Systematic Review Protocol, Victoria Traynor, Ritin Fernandez, Katherine Caldwell

Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health - Papers: part A

Review question/objective The overall objective of this research is to undertake a systematic review of the effects of spending time outdoors in daylight on the psychosocial wellbeing of older adults and family carers. The specific questions to be addressed are: Which aspects of psychosocial wellbeing are affected by spending time outdoors in daylight in older adults and family carers? To what extent is spending time outdoors in the daylight effective in improving aspects of psychosocial wellbeing in older adults and family carers?

It's Time To Examine The Status Of Our Undergraduate Mental Health Curricula, Susan J. Thomas, Brahmavar N. Pai, Kerry Dawes Jan 2013

It's Time To Examine The Status Of Our Undergraduate Mental Health Curricula, Susan J. Thomas, Brahmavar N. Pai, Kerry Dawes

Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health - Papers: part A

To the Editor: Review of undergraduate mental health education is timely, given the growing disease burden of mental disorders and the need to better equip doctors for their central role in treatment. Curricula should prepare all doctors with competencies in recognising and treating mental health problems,1 because these occur frequently in patients across all branches of medicine, leading to poorer outcomes.2 Curricula should also prepare a minority of doctors for specialist psychiatry training.

Multivariate Statistic And Time Series Analyses Of Grain-Size Data In Quaternary Sediments Of Lake El'gygytgyn, Ne Russia, Alexander Francke, V Wennrich, M A. Sauerbrey, O Juschus, Martin Melles, J Brigham-Grette Jan 2013

Multivariate Statistic And Time Series Analyses Of Grain-Size Data In Quaternary Sediments Of Lake El'gygytgyn, Ne Russia, Alexander Francke, V Wennrich, M A. Sauerbrey, O Juschus, Martin Melles, J Brigham-Grette

Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health - Papers: part A

Lake El'gygytgyn, located in the Far East Rus- sian Arctic, was formed by a meteorite impact about 3.58 Ma ago. In 2009, the International Continental Scientific Drilling Program (ICDP) at Lake El'gygytgyn obtained a continu- ous sediment sequence of the lacustrine deposits and the up- per part of the impact breccia. Here, we present grain-size data of the past 2.6 Ma. General downcore grain-size varia- tions yield coarser sediments during warm periods and finer ones during cold periods. According to principal component analysis (PCA), the climate-dependent variations in grain- size distributions mainly occur in the coarse silt and very fine …

Our increased understanding of 'Man's Role in Changing the Face of the Earth' (Thomas 1956) is one of the key scientific achievements of the second half of the 20th century. Human activities now appropriate more than one third of the Earth's terrestrial ecosystem production, and between a third and a half of the land surface of the planet has been transformed by human development (Vitousek et al. 1997). Humans are inextricably embedded in all earth surface processes, and often dominate them. These findings are increasingly being recognised in political and policy spheres, most notably in contemporary debates about climate change …

Ground-Based Infrared Spectroscopic Measurements Of Carbonyl Sulfide: Free Tropospheric Trends From A 24-Year Time Series Of Solar Absorption Measurements, C P. Rinsland, A Goldman, E Mahieu, R Zander, J Notholt, Nicholas Jones, D W. T Griffith, T M. Stephen, L S. Chiou Jan 2002

Ground-Based Infrared Spectroscopic Measurements Of Carbonyl Sulfide: Free Tropospheric Trends From A 24-Year Time Series Of Solar Absorption Measurements, C P. Rinsland, A Goldman, E Mahieu, R Zander, J Notholt, Nicholas Jones, D W. T Griffith, T M. Stephen, L S. Chiou

Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health - Papers: part A

Solar absorption spectra recorded over a 24-year time span have been analyzed to retrieve average free tropospheric mixing ratios of carbonyl sulfide (OCS). The measurements were recorded with the Fourier transform spectrometer located in the U.S. National Solar Observatory McMath solar telescope facility on Kitt Peak (altitude 2.09 km, lat. 31.9°N, long. 111.6°W), southwest of Tucson, Arizona, and were obtained on 167 days between May 1978 and February 2002, typically at 0.01-cm−1 spectral resolution. A best fit to the time series shows an average mixing ratio of 566 pptv (1 pptv = 10−12 per unit volume) between 2.09 …
